Jackson not the director for 'The Hobbit'

I liked the Silmarillion as much as the regular books, but they'd have to give it a major rewrite to make a movie out of it. It's more like a historical timeline than a cohesive story, and any film made of it would probably drag on and bore the audience. They'd have to focus on specific characters (like Beren) to make a profit.

I've got bad experiences with fourth movies. I get this horrible picture inside my head about a guy with long ears ruining the whole movie by bouncing around the main characters spewing silly lines.

So what will be Jackson's next movie?
Lord of the Rings 4: The Victory Celebration. If you thought Brokeback Mountain was bad...

I don't think it would work as a movie/series.
I recall quite a few people saying that about a certain trilogy, too. You know, the one with the ring and the dark riders and a gang of homosexuals saving the world;)?

I didnt even know there was a Hobbit movie planned....
Me neither.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure?

:p

In all seriousness, as much as I love Peter Jackson's movies, and want him to direct... I'm not really concerned about this (mainly because I've never read the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings series). Instead, I'm going to be hopeful that the movie will be great, because there's no sense whining and repeating "no no no no no." :)

Yeah, but Legolas won't be in the Hobbit...

At the end of the day, I'm not all that bothered if they don't make a Hobbit movie. I fear that even Jackson would make the tone too light, when it would ideally have to be told as a very dark fable indeed to retain the gravitas of the original text.

As for the Silmarillion being unfilmable... People said the same thing about LotR. Admittedly it wouldn't be the easiest literary project to adapt for the small screen... but it's certainly not impossible.

What? He's good at ideas, but not so good at implementation of said ideas IMO. When he let other people do what they know best like with ESB and RotJ it worked out well. With the prequels we got Jarjar and battle droids with highpitched voices. :p

Do you like people complaining about your creation? It's George Lucas's universe, not yours, if you don't like what's in it, then oh well. There's nothing you can really do about it.

Lucas wasn't the only person to work on the original trilogy, friend. He didn't direct or script the best of the trilogy, ESB. His ideas were often overruled because he wasn't the media mogul he is today.

Face it, what he came out with in the prequels was poorly scripted, poorly directed dross, compared to the glorious group effort that was the OT.

All because he believed his own hype. Sad.
