According to this, the notorious assassin from the Hitman video games will be played by Timothy Olyphant.

Hitman: Afterlife

Planning and filming has begun for Hitman: Afterlife (the Hitman movie), to be released in 2007. Agent 47 will be played by Timothy Olyphant[1]. (Vin Diesel was originally supposed to play Agent 47 but he was dropped off from the project) There has been a movement among fans to get the original voice actor David Bateson, who is also an experienced actor, into the lead role. Bateson, whose looks provided the basis for 47's, strongly desired and campaigned for the role, but lost.

Also, a very short article on IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465494/

So, what do fellow Hitman fans think about this? I know from some earlier debates and mentions of the film that people would prefere either David Bateson (I'm one of these), or Jason Statham as Agent 47. What do you think about this choice? I personally am not too thrilled, but it's better than Vin Diesel.

Vin kicks a$$

Diesel can play certain roles really well. I myself enjoyed Pitch Black (the first Riddick movie) and The Pacifier, but I don't think he would have made a good Agent 47. I am disappointed that Bateson didn't get the part, but hopefully Olyphant will do a good job and the movie will be a success.

I'm so glad they ditched Vin... game-to-movie conversions aren't usually very sucessfull, but having him play Agent 47 would have been a mocquery IMO.

SO true! Making him play the refined, skinny Assassin that 47 is, would surely suck. He doesn't fit that role.

He owned in Pitch Black and The Fast and the Furious though. But those roles were a perfect fit.

Imo, Ben Kingsley ftw! :D

To bad the guy is a bit...old.

Bateson is old, weak and nerdy. He might have a deep growly voice but his looks don't have the necessary dangerous on-screen charisma.

Vin Diesel is all about quiet menace and would have fit 47 perfectly. I would even have payed money to see it in the theatres.

Olyphant has the same amount of menace as Jim Carrey had in Dumb and Dumber. So with Olyphant as a star, the Hitman movie will be cheap, cheesy and all kinds of manner of bad in as many ways as possible. Iwill be sure to keep playing the games and stay as far as possible from the movie.

IMO having Vin Diesel as 47 would have turned the movie into a cheezy action movie, much like XXX was. Just because he's bald doesn't mean he would have been a good choice for the role. I'd rather have a better actor shave his head for the role :p

actually, i would've preferred a dark and cunning 47 which, IMHO, is what Vin would've been able to bring to the role.

and for those that think that Vin isn't capable of doing a serious role needs to watch the movie "Find Me Guilty". great movie, and Vin does some of his best work in it, although he does look a bit cheesy with the wig. :)

Quoted for emphasis.

Like I said, Diesel is good for certain roles, but Agent 47 just isn't one of them.

I wrote "Diesel is all about quiet menace" and you responded "Just because he's bald doesn't mean he would have been a good choice for the role" so imagine my puzzlement over your deduction from my argument.

Saying that someone is "all about quiet menace" sounds more like it describes a character trait and not a physical trait. Don't you agree?

I also happen to agree with you on your complaint. But I also think that, that particular complaint is better put against Jason Statham (whose only credit for playing 47 is having previously played a bald guy in a black suit) not Vin Diesel. Statham has done (I really want to say ONLY, but I won't) several cheesy action movies. While Diesel has done *A* cheesy action movie but several movies where he plays menacing violent characters through charisma and presence not only through words and actions.

I wasn't specifically responding to your comment with this particular sentence, the first part of my post was really my answer. The part about him being bald was mostly an answer to everyone who thinks he "fits the role perfectly". As far as I'm concerned, XXX, Fast and Furious and Pitch Black were all pretty cheesy movies where Diesel plays a guy who's muscles are really what the character is all about (maybe less in Fast and Furious).

As far as Jason Statham goes, I do think he's a better actor than Vin Diesel, even if they have a similar resume. I thought Statham did a pretty good job in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and Revolver. But there's no point arguing about that since either of them will play the role of 47. :p

I must have been psychic... seeing how I summed up the final product before it was even made. Proof? Just watch the movie.
