The Official Happy Birthday Thread

From discussion in my Birthday Thread, we all thought that there should be a Birthday Thread where everyone can share their Birthdays, KOTOR cast members (In Shem's case) and others. What better date to create this Thread on my Birthday too. Happy Birthday me and many others in the future! I'll keep an Archives of all Birthday Threads here.

I agree with tk. A lot of birthday threads get fairly generic "happy b-day!" responses, but some of them can be a lot of fun to read. Jae and RJM's birthday threads got hilarious replies, but they probably wouldn't if they were all lumped into one thread. Most stickies or giant "official blahblah" threads get a fair number of responses at first but die after a few months and end up taking all discussion related to the topic with them (as they are the official place to discuss those topics). My guess is that a large birthday thread would get a lot of posts at first but get next to none a few years from now. There goes all the entertaining comments birthdays get. :)

It would get pretty generic, too. Different people sometimes get very different responses in their individual threads, but if you lumped all birthdays into one I think you'd lose that. If there's an individual thread for RJM's birthday, for instance, you'd get a lot of jokes and witty comments about him. If there's an individual thread for Jae you'd get comments (or certain pictures :D) about her. But if you put everyone together in thread, you'd probably hear "happy birthday to everyone who has theirs in March!" a bunch of times.

There's also the matter of longevity. RJM's b-day thread took weeks before people stopped posting it, and was a lot of fun to read all the way. But if everyone's birthdays are all in one, it could get commented on for only a couple days before someone else's b-day came up.

And there's the matter of how personal it is. One thread about one person seems more meaningful than a giant one for several dozen.

I would have to tend to agree with tk and ED here. Personally, if I were ever to be wished happy birthday, I'd prefer to have my name somewhere in the title.

Though, a generic thread of those who are not members of LF, like for what Shem does for the characters from KotOR, wouldn't be too bad. But, even then, that takes out the emphasis on that person's birthday.

So, no.

I disagree. Having your name in the title of the thread "Happy Birthday Topsite!" is much more meaningful than looking through a 10 page thread to see if anyone wished you happy birthday.

You have a point, however, I dont think you read my post in Topsite's thread...

My idea was for a monthly birthday thread that listed all the birthdays of active members in Ahto forums. It would get stickied until the current month was over, then a new one would get put up... this way we wouldnt have people feeling like this forum is just one big clique where only certain people get b-day threads.

*shrug* Youre the mod though...

No, I didn't read that post, Aash Li, I admit. :). But we do have the LF Calendar that has everyone's birthday on it not to mention the birthday posted on each person's profile.

FWIW, I'm not an Ahto mod. ;) If one of them wants to maintain this as their pet project, that's cool by me. :)

That is precisely why I'm not with this thread. Sure, maybe most birthday threads look spamfests, but they're actually heartfelt celebration (well, most of the time). How are you supposed to celebrate a birthday by posting "Happy Birthday" everyday to someone who says "Me! It's my birthday today!"

Nope, I say we continue making birthday threads as we used to, and occasionally combine two or three members together.

Okay, how about this. You don't have to post here, but in the first post, I link every Birthday Thread here and post if it is anyone's Birthday.

Not much of a point IMO. You'll then get some posts in this thread and some in the other. Two threads for one subject seems pretty pointless. We'd have to stick with one way of wishing happy birthdays, which most people seem to agree on already.

@ Sabre: Agreed!. I remember how happy I was when Topsite (then Pottsie) made me a B'Day thread last year. There's a special something to it. A general birthday thread will definitely be filled with: "Hey, its my b'day today!" "happy b'day!" "happy b'day". And i know from personal experience that pretty soon the thread may be discussing everything but B'Days. Stick with tradition.

I was going to say something like that, which means I'm in agreement with tk102. I think the system how we had it was just perfect! :D

So now were going to have a forum full of happy birthday threads just to placate everyone that wants one. :p

My way of thinking, if I have to ask or remind people to post one for me, then its just not the same thing. Its better to come to the forums on my birthday (january 24) and find that someone thought of me enough to make one. So if I have to remind or ask, then just dont do it because its not going to feel the same way. >_>
