Ooh..Nice! Microsofts Surface Computer Ready!

Recommended Posts

Im sure many of you have seen the youtube vids of the multitouch screen protoypes that have been demonstrated overthe last couple of years.

MS has been working with the creators of those devices and made a ready to ship surface computer - which will be rolled out to commercial clients this year.

Here is a detailed demonstration video

http://on10.net/Blogs/larry/first-look-microsoft-surfacing-computing/

really impressive, IMO. one of my friends likened it to the glass computer table in TRON....lolz.

It'll be cool to see how these will be applied to home users, gaming and graphical apps

I'd spill something on it and have a $5,000-$10,000 coffee table :fist:

Definitely like the "wow" factor, however I wouldn't want this to replace my 'mainstream' desktop.

Now, this technology with a Media PC architecture and linked entertainment system and now we're talking! Talk about the ultimate remote control, media library, and possibly gaming console/accessory and yeah, this would be an ideal piece of furniture. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi capabilities alone make all of this and much more possible.

Ask me to do my Photoshop work on it, errr I don't think so.. my back screams enough as it is... unless that tabletop pivots into a drafting table degree ;)

I could see these replacing tables in restaurants. Pick your order and entertain yourself while you wait. Of course it'll probably be a decade or two before it gets widespread, and I doubt I'll ever get one for use at home... unless they make a really awesome RTS game.

lolz... Aash.... touch screen in Kmart ?? are you serious?? Ive had a PDA for a zillion years.... and used a tablet pc heavily for just over a year. This is isnt the same... pop your cellphone or wifi device on the desk at kmart and see what it does :D

Its the multi-input and device based/wireless input recognition component that sets this apart from a stylus(or single input) based device.

The collaborative application potential is also great, but wasnt really demonstrated. For those in the creative and visual fields especially, it would be a great tool(rather than wacom type tablet etc)

I can already see a sports presenter drawing on such a screen to say "this is where player X should have run"

Lynk - old news were the protoypes of the DLP projection devices that that enable the multitouch input - referred to several times in the clip. MS has been working with those developers and put out a Vista based version for commercial clients.

So maybe Samsung, who made my LCD monitor, and logitech who made my keyb/mouse, should be taking credit for my vista based gaming PC, home theater pc etc :D

It'll just be interesting to see how they'll be applied home media/gaming at home. I could definitely see myself using one of these as my main pc, as long as it was in a more ergonomic position ! keyboards are so....20th century... bring on virtual keyboards I say :p

but hey, if you dont like it - dont buy it :D s'easy They'll be super expensive to start with for sure :D

lolz...

I dunno, it's like with Bluray, everyone credits Sony when they had the least to do with it. And now Microsoft is being credited for something that really isn't all their's. I've known of this technology for quite some time now and Microsoft wasn't the one pioneering it, they had involvement but it's not all them.

lynk... the people who make the discoveries might not get the credit as far as public perception, but they have the patents...which are worth far more :D

I wonder if Antoine Lavoisier's descendants are whining that he should be getting credit for all infotech and the ''internets'' since he was the first to identify Silicon :D

Still, comparing a bluray to a computer system that is run on software built ground up by MS at Redmond isnt exactly the best analogy. Credit to MS for realising the great potential of the input tech pioneered by its creators/patent holders :D (who themselves adaped existing tech - they didnt invent DLP!) And we dont even know what CPU/mainboard or video hardware is employed....

All technology is dependant on the sums on many schools of knowledge, and the hard work by engineers to turn physical materials into functioning components... :violin:

I am on the cusp of a great discovery myself. I dream it every night, but forget it immediately upon waking up :D

Yes there is a touchscreen thingy in kmart, and mocking people isnt nice. I forget its use there, but it is a touchscreen.

lolz...Aash, I thought you were mocking me!

Touchscreen input devices, like the photo printing ones at Kmart, atms, PDAs, tablet pcs are single input with stylus/finger etc. There is no scope for the multi input and wifi interactivity seen with these DLP/Vista based devices.

I thought the vid was amazing :) Especially the program assembled for the cellphone company...pop teh phone on the screen - it recognises it and tells you the info, and you can generate invoices etc...snazzy. Same for the wifi etc camera.

I'd love to see what graphical/editing apps makers and gaming devs can do with it :D

I wonder what its resolution is !

Who tk? Probably an oven mitt shaped like a fish too ;)

'An oven mitt called Wanda'.... :D

Joy does pwn. I'm on my second one because I used the first one so much the binding broke (note--get the spiral bound version, not the paperback book version).

I'd use mine as a weather station, games, blogging, anything cool.... :) Kids would probably use it for interactive homework and games and so forth.

I should make myself clear about what I said earlier...

I had heard about this technology quite some time ago, but I can't ever remember Microsoft being a part of its development. So it was surprising to me to hear that Microsoft actually did have something to do with it. Most likely they got involved late in the development.
