Cygnus Q'ol
"They say, two-thousand-zero-zero party over oops, out of time. So, I'm gonna party like it's 1999." In 1984, there were rumors floating around of impending doom in the year 2000, some sixteen years into the future from there. Well, we see that happend like it was fortold. Maybe Prince should have used 2012 in his song. ...he probably couldn't find anything to rhyme with twelve. OK, I'm starting to hear more and more about this prophesized pheonomenon and I'm not sure what to make of this. There are many other sites if you were to Google 2012. This is just one example. http://www.december212012.com/articles/Polar-Shift/The_Pole_Shift.htm Since I'll still be alive in 2012, Hopefully, I'm wondering, is this something to give concern to? Did the Mayans have knowledge of the future? If not, then how can their calendar have been so specific for so long? What would happen on this planet if the magnetic poles were to reverse? Would N on the compass suddenly become S? Would water drain reverse down the sink or would there be larger, more catastrophic consequences? There seems to be evidence that this has happened before. It this just a doomsday hoax or is there any scientific validity to these forsights?
Prime
I was listening to a regular science show a couple of weeks ago, and apparently there will be very little observable effect to the average person...
tk102
Cross-reference to this Kavar's Corner thread, though I think Ahto is more appropriate for it.

SilentScope001
No scientific validity. Let me get a link to Exit Mundis, a site that specalizes in determing how the human race will bite the dust, which has a section about this 2012 nonsense. http://www.exitmundi.nl/Maya.htm The only scientific date when the Earth will end is in 5 billion years. Do your doomsday properchies then! Here's the whole site, for your viewing pleasure: http://www.existmundi.nl
HerbieZ
I have heared too many freaks rant on about the end of the world with specific dates given always to be proved wrong. Don't people have anything else better to do than predict the end of the world. Wish someone would predict the end of their frickin worlds. I wasn't prophesizing about the end of the world. I was just looking for opinions. I think I got yours. You must admit though that there is something interesting with the data on our planet's magnetic field and the poles they create. How did the Mayan's know about this? HerbieZ
Nah my friend i did'nt mean that against you. Just doomsaying fortune tellers in general. All i read was the words 'magnetic field'. Then the words 'reverse the polarity'. I instantly thought of Star Trek then drifted off to play Starfleet Command 2 blissfully forgetting that i was in grave danger from magnets. Aash Li
Reverse Polarity in 2012! The new global warming! I wonder how they are going to blame that on human progress... Oh noes! Your walking to work is causing the poles to switch! Everyone needs to sit at home and do nothing but vegetate to reverse this global clamity! Otherwise earth will be the new Pluto! Rabish Bini
Prophesizing the end of the world will not get you friends. People who thought this up should open there eyes a bit.
Jae Onasi
Well, having heard all sorts of 'the world will end on X!' and none of them having come true, I'll just go on as if the world won't end and do my thing. If it does end, then I won't care much. As for the Mayans, they were brilliant mathematicians, astronomers, and mathematicians. The temple El Castillo at Chichen Itza is oriented with amazing precision for the sun to create a special shadow down the stairs at each equinox, and the ball court at that site shows a tremendous understanding of sound and acoustics. Most people here have never grown up without a computer or calculator, so most of us forget that many structures were built without the benefit of these things--I vaguely remember being shown how to use a slide rule in algebra class one time, and a lot of structures such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis were built using a slide rule and calculations on paper. The Mayan civilization lasted quite a while, and obviously had some gifted people who accomplished tremendous things in math and science, so it doesn't surprise me to see the level of accuracy in their calendars. It's too bad most of their culture and history has been lost to us to help explain why they thought 2012 was such a concern for them.
Gargoyle King
Mhhh..... Well it's not a "hoax" as such as it's based on the beliefs of an anchient civilisation. But these things have been "foretold" time and time again. To put it plainly they are more like "conspiracy" theories and may never happen so it's best not to reflect on these things too much (not like you want to - quite depressing really). Besides the way humanity is going we won't need a prophecy to come true to destroy the world we will pretty much do that ourselves.
