Q
Unbelieveable, isn't it? DAAMIT has done a great thing this product cycle. You were right, stingerhs. R7xx is a tour de force.
Astrotoy7
^^^^ Astro going ATI!?! [humming]its the end of the world as we know it...[/humming] lolz...dont worry, there were a bunch of nv fanboys/girls Ive kept in touch with since my beta testing days, and they've been ribbing me all weekend from all corners of the globe... choice of the bunch was this, via SMS from Sverige: "4870 huh? You had ONE chance to save all kittens from being killed EVAR, and now you blew it! ps- Ive already got two :D" @Q >> the *real* winners are the geeks at Qimonda. Can you imagine those guys now, struttin around, braggin to checkout girls at RadioShack... "hey, I like invented GDRR5, oooohh yeaaaaah" * * * Edit: Some curious 4870X2 news: AMD to release 2 flavours of 4870X2 1. 2GBDDR3 Version >>>RRP $499USD?? 1. 1GBDDR5 Version certainly clears up the confusion that has been amassing about that Looks like AMD are now in the mood to play 'pi$$ing contest' with nvidia mtfbwya

Astrotoy7
Beat me to it Q Theres a huge buzz of anticipation on this card unlike any other I can remember. I think it's because we all have the feeling that AMD is about to kick nvidias high end flagship card(GTX 280) in the nuts, after being in second place for sooo, sooo long I like even the early numbers...but the size of the thing.... why dont they ever post dimensions dammit!! Some more previews of this card for the curious: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTUzMSwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14178&page=1 http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/15105 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2325444,00.asp http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=588&pageid=1 http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=590&type=expert If anyone comes across the dimensions and posts them here, I will reward them with: quantity= 1 buxom wench (*) EDIT>>> nvm... the techreport article measures it as 10.5" in length, now to get that ruler out mtfbwya (*)Actual prize may or may not be as described. Q
Anand described it as being "fairly compact for having 2 GPUs and 1GB (other sites report 2GB -weird ) of GDDR5 on board." As would be expected, power consumption is enormous, but it seems to have quite the beefy heatsink to deal with all of the heat. I wonder how many +12v amps it will require. Ahaa! Found it! Comparing sizes, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 and GeForce GTX 280 are exactly the same length at 10.5 inches. I want my buxom wench. Sherilyn Fenn will do. Det. Bart Lasiter
Anand described it as being "fairly compact for having 2 GPUs and 1GB (other sites report 2GB -weird ) of GDDR5 on board." UPDATE: Our initial publication of this article indicated a 2x 512MB framebuffer for a total of 1GB on board. We have since learned that the R700 we tested has 2GB of RAM total for 2x 1GB framebuffers. This has affected some of our analysis and conclusion. We do apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Bottom of the first page.
Q
^^^ Thanks for pointing that out. It's an update and may have been added since I read the article. That's a lot of expensive memory on a ~$500 card. All DAAMIT needs to do now is work on Crossfire scaling. I think that they're waiting until they release the X2 to present the new drivers. Remember that, aside from a hotfix, no new drivers were released with the 4850 and 4870. We may see improved (perhaps greatly improved) scaling and performance then. Astrotoy7
I wonder if those reports of two versions of this card were moreso imagination than journalism EDIT>> ah, looks like this is the missing link... people have been so focussed on the 4870X2, AMDs just put it out with far less fanfare... 4850 2GB announced the benchies will be very intersting,....does any game/OS really know what to do with 2GB?? Can the architecture handle it... maybe Q can fill us in ? mtfbwya
Q
This is getting out of hand. I can understand the need for a 1GB version, but who would ever need 2GB with a single GPU?
Astrotoy7
This is getting out of hand. I can understand the need for a 1GB version, but who would ever need 2GB with a single GPU? yep. Q
IMO, no. At 1600P maybe, but you'd probably find yourself needing more GPU horsepower at that resolution, and anyone gaming at 1600P ($1000+ monitor) can afford that horsepower, making that card rather pointless. Negative Sun
Agreed, it's probably overkill for anything other than Crysis at lower resolutions, and even then, you'd probably only gain an extra 3FPS. Great news about the 4870X2, can't wait to see it released and in the hands of third party suppliers! Sorry about my absence, my ISP decided to mess me around and cut me off for no particular reason for a few days, but I've been too busy to phone and shout at them until today And yes Astro, I will get round to doing my assigned task in these forums... soon

Q
And the new drivers haven't even come out yet. Expect some absolute lowball pricing by Nvidia on the GT200 line. I'm starting to see it already. I think that ATI might just save AMD's a$$, at least for long enough to develop a CPU capable of competing with Intel's lineup once again.

Q
AMD could help their sad financial situation by making some tough but wise decisions like adapting their successful 780G chipset to support Intel CPUs. They'd make a pile of money off of just that.

They'd make a pile of money off of just that. Q, that is indeed a corporately sensible idea. However, it may mean that AMD and intel will be collaborating rather competing. the effect on prices of such a collaboration may not be something that appeals to the likes of consumers like us. Astrotoy7
Hilbert at G3D has finally got his 4870X2 preview card and has now posted a jaw droppingly detailed preview. I hassled him enough on the G3D forums for him to remember to report the cards actual length: 27 cm. Phawr! stingerhs
^^^^ yeah, what sucks with current DX10 games is that they often times look just fine on DX9. the improvement is occasionally noticeable, but its not something you're going to notice in the middle of a firefight on Crysis. that's why i can't get too excited about DX11's "better graphics capability". the good news is that with DX11, your graphics card basically becomes a separate processor entirely that can be used for a lot more than graphics. good call by Microsoft to recognize that the CPU isn't the only hardware element that is capable of making calculations, especially given how powerful video cards are becoming. i can't say that i'm excited about it, but its interesting nonetheless.
