Darth Avlectus
While this might only really be relevant to those in the USA, I certainly would welcome anyone outside the USA who is knowledgeable enough to comment. Upon visiting my local "Grocery Outlet" recently, I came to learn of the company that makes "Mother's" brand of cookies going out of business. This was quite a smack in the face. Growing up I remember these cookies and I loved them dearly. Here is a relevant article: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/09/BU6413DQQO.DTL I'm sure this will come as unwelcome news to anyone who has enjoyed their cookies --casually in the least to fondly in love-- since their inception in 1914. Y'know it is just so sad to see this happen. This will be a dearly missed brand. BTW: Get whatever remains in your stores ASAP before they disappear FOREVER! :(Impressions? RedHawke
BTW: Get whatever remains in your stores ASAP before they disappear FOREVER! I bet one of their 'competitors' has already made bids for the recipes. I bet we see some other company come out with similar/same product lines in the near future. SW01
It is sad to see older and 'loved' companies going under, but it seems to be a sign of the times. I don't think we have that particular brand name in Britain, but we've had the same sort of thing with the Woolworths stores, trading for 99 years then closed down recently due to financial losses, partially attributable to the economic climate. It's been pretty much exclusive to America as far as I know...however it is not unheard of for there to be variations and similar recipies from companies. Sign of the times indeed. Economy in the toilet is definitely the cause. While the why is debatable (let's not get into that HERE please), there is no doubt that this is a trend that will continue... and it will suck! I thought this was going to be a futurama thread... I vaguely remember seeing those brands of cookies. But since I dont buy cookies.. Hmm. [bender]: Aww look, the ladies DO like me after all. Eat that, Fry! [Fry]: No fair, how come you get all the hotties and I'm stuck with...that? (points to Leela) [Leela]: (cyclops frown, runs over and jumpkicks Fry) HMMPH! Don't buy them huh? Do you bake your own? Admittedly my father makes cookies that blow any other cookies out of the water--unfortunately, that is only around Christmas time. I'd go 4 hours out of my way for some of those. MMM. Now I'm getting hungry... RedHawke is probably right, though. Only some people will remember the actual brand but the recipie will probably live on and soon people will forget all about it. Sad too. Mother's had quite a history. Strange I suppose, but if one were to keep a package--perhaps unopened? Collectible when I'm an old man? I mean--pristine boxes of old stuff actually makes bank at auctions. Watch antiques roadshow sometime. You'll see what I mean. --$35,000 for a box (a cardboard box) in near pristine condition from the 1950's only opened ever once to take out the toy truck. I can dream.

Litofsky
Oh, truly! who shall miss thy High-Fructose Corn Syrup cookies, constructed out of artificial sugar and other heart-healthy goodness? Surely, not other brand shall ever take thy's place! Apologies if said brand did not use any/many artificial ingredients.
