Behold: The World's Greatest Flight Sim Geek

We've all seen pics of those oddballs who stick 10 CRT monitors together to play MS flight Sim. That's naught compared to this.

This guy has spent approx $200,000(US) making his own 'homebrew' flight simulator.

Whilst it is a ridiculously expensive amount to spend on what is essentially a gaming rig, he at least shares it with other flight sim fans, and has even made the Guinness book of records for "world's most expensive home flight simulator".

Ah well, at least he didnt spend $60mil which is apparently what the real deal costs...

I wonder if I could get him to make me an x-wing I could play 'Xw v Tie' on :D

You mean buy a real commercial jet, which is what this simulates for, and is obviously what he wants to fly?

I'm guessing that's why.

Have you flown a real plane? I'd much rather fly a Skyhawk than pretend I'm flying a 737 et al. Granted it would still probably cost a bit more than 200,000 for a new Cessna + gas + progressive and annual maintenance, but still. I'd rather fly the prop plane than pretend I'm flying the big jet.

Is there some reason he hasn't bought a real plane with the amount of money he's put into that thing?

He should also get a real plane

Drop and do 50 pushups for not reading the article! :D

Sheil is a veteran real-world pilot and owns a Beechcraft Baron B58. He said he preferred flying a real plane but enjoyed the simulator because there were no limitations.

Apparently he does rent it out to the RFDS(Royal Flying Doctor Service) for their training ;)

A bit more? Try a whole lot more, and this conversation was about price, not about ease of flight, so I'm failing to see the relevance of this.

Exactly what the guy in the article said ;) Yet he still built the sim because he finds it enjoyable

longstoryshort. everyone will do what their hearts and purses will allow them. Any conjecture or argument beyond that fact is unnecessary :)

What a useful and productive expenditure.

I'd venture to say renting it to an emergency medical service(RFDS) to help train their pilots is very useful indeed. Don't you think? The RFDS could never afford that themselves. As the article states, the chap who built it is also involved in fundraising for the RFDS.

Not exactly deserving of such scathing criticism?

I think you're more likely to come across profligate spenders with gold plated arses(etc) in your line of work :p
