Here is an excerpt from the interview conducted with Chris Purvis on the Scumm Bar website

"Bill Tiller told us you were responsible for the whole "porcelain joke", a gag that has plagued the Monkey Island community since 1997 - can you tell us why Guybrush is afraid of porcelain?

Really? I always thought it had something to do with the time in Monkey 1 where Fester Shinetop hit Guybrush on the head with a vase.

from Chris Purvis"

but doesn't he know that it is possible to not use the vase in the first game at all? If you pick it up before you go in to the room.

As I said in the Mojo comments post - you might want to search the page a bit better, and you might find some more info.

Well I think the HIGHLIGHT *nudge nudge* of the article was at the VERY END *wink wink*. Plus, holding hands? This is moving very quickly.

thats funny. i already tried to highlight the article. i guess i stopped too soon. Well someone tell Bill Tiller that a throwaway gag stops at one. a running gag is one that keeps coming and yes it can cause speculation. Plus, anyway, didn't someone ask recently on these boards about the porcelain, maybe in the Who hates CMI post.

Whatever.:)

Scummbuddy: It is just a joke. It means nothing. I find it strange that a throw away line like that gets so much attention. It is just a joke. Why would anyone be afraid of porcelain?

Well, yeah, until you get to the end where it's "That's the second biggest... no, no, that IS the biggest amplifier I've ever seen" (or whatever the exact quote is).
