Abolishment of race question...

Me and my girlfriend have been discussing this for a few days now, and I'd like some feedback on it.

There was a thread here about a month back that basically discussed reverse-racism; that being, an oversealousness to appease minorities, resulting in leaving more qualified individuals left in the dust. Affirmative action quotas, etc... An example would be her brother. He scored very highly on the entrance exam to the police academy, but was rejected. When he asked why, he was told they needed to make their minority quota.

We discussed it, and we decided that striking the question of race from most forms and applications would be a step in the right direction. Keep it on things like IDs and identification forms, but get it off of job applications and credit applications. Racism on both sides would probably be curbed.

Any thoughts on this? I'd hate to think it's a racist idea, but I'm sure some would say that...

I agree completely. Affermative action is the mist ****ing bull**** ever. I find it sickening that someone is given a job when there are more qualified poeple who want it simply because they are a minority. I simply can not state how much I hate things like affermative action.

Well I am a minority, Hispanic. I think that jobs should be given to people who are qualified for the job and not whether they just need a minority in the company or organazation. People with better skills deserve better job's because they either have gotten more training, they have more expierence, and they also got the extra training or expierence for a purpose, not just for it to look good on a resume.

But do you agree with the idea to abolish the question of race on applications for jobs, credit cards, financial aid, etc..?

The elimination of affirmative action would be good, but thats a big goal. Little steps would be needed, and this, I think, woudl be a good one.

Speaking as a Black British fella,

I always thought that this question on applications practically gave potentially racist employers a chance to filter out or as you say especially pick minority candidates. This can only be wrong in my opinion.

I have filled in applications that did not have a race or religion check box, and attended interviews with these companies.

My name is typically British sounding, and when I showed up for interview looking like any other Jamaican born fella with Locks, I simply got extremely strange reactions, one Interviewer even commented that Black people normally have names like Winston and Delroy etc, LOL, could I believe my ears? No!

Oddly enough I did get that job, but left after a month for a better offer. Ultimately the sooner the question of race becomes null and void and people just work on merit then cool.

One point I may mention, when applying for the Police as you say shock, perhaps the police do need more minority officers, I know that in the UK black and asian officers are proportionately misrepresented in the Police force, I suspect this partially due to Institutional racism.

Anyways gtg :)

i think we all disciminate, as in the form of: making difference between people:

if you have to choose between your friend and someone you don't know, are you discriminating the person you don't know? u could say so, becouse u choosed your friend only becouse you know him better, not becouse he is better than the other person, only u don't know the other person.

i think they also call it positive discrimination, i don't think it is good, i mean, why give a low educated person the job, if a high educaded person also apliess?

my vision is offcouse verry simple. becouse i am only 14

Yes I think that it should be removed. All it has done is classify onthier colors and not thier skill, which is horrible. And the racism is bad. And I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriends brother, another victim of ageism how minorities like me think we are just as good as them when we usually dont know jack about it....

the whole postivie discrimination thing is utterly flawed. to positivley discrimate against someone (e.g give a job to someone from an ethinc minority) is then negativly discriminating against another (the person of another race who didnt get the job)

so in fact they are still as racist as before however the focus has changed

unfortunately the world isnt working too well in the racism department ... it cannot be removed much the same as sexism and agism

affirmative action is flawed

but then again racism against whites is allowed neway

New Black Music (a whole BBC station devoted to it) is allowed

but if sum1 invented New White Music ..... that would be banned

oh well ... the world sucks

i suspect that that may be the case in some jurisdictions, i would also like to point out that by population percentage, there are probably less asians and dark skinned people then white people around,i may be wrong but i think that britain has a white majority. this would lead to a white majority in pretty much every profession. (cant think of one that wouldnt be dominantly white at the moment).

and while public racism is on the drop in most areas (HURRAY!!!) i find that its increasing greatly online, i cannot list how many times ive been called a n***** on battle.net or just playing multi jkII. i dont understand why these people are calling others that word at all. i can see someone who IS dark skinned using it as a friendly term and i would never call a dark man racist for using it, but when its used in a derogatory manner its probably a white person doing the talking.

i can honestly say that 3 of my closest friends are dark skinned, to me it isnt really an issue. i think that if the world is to make any progress towards ending racism we have to as a whole stop caring about colour lines. any focus on anti racism or racism is bad.

is this shift from open racism to closet online racism a good one? i suppose since less people are physically hurt its a good thing, but emotional health is important too.

this is just a theory i have but ill let you all read it and decide for yourself if im on to somethin...or just cracked:

people call others by racist names like n***** or sp*** because it gets a reaction, nobody (well hardly anybody) calls another a sillyhead as an insult. because you wouldnt really care. they resort to racist namecalling to provoke a reaction. if nobody were to care about racist name calling then i believe that it would stop. how to go about this is beyond me.

I think that all questions of race and sex should be removed from all forms. Sure someones name may give them away as to what sex they are..but in the end that is of no importance. The most qualified should always get the job.

I have also notice that racsim inline is more abundant than ever. Its easy to sit behind a desk and say an insult like that rather than to someones face.

Racist insults are not allowed on my server...period. I kick anyone the first time the word ni**er comes from them. It still baffles me why color or race have anything to do with someones character.

If your an ahole its because you simply are one not because of your color. I think people need to wake up. It all so sad.:(

Yeah I always wondered why they had a special box for African American scholarships.

No offense, but it's good to acknowledge someone's race; but don't shower respect or disrespect on them, either way it's as bad as the other side of the spectrum.

At least in my town I can rejoice with my fellow asians; it's full of them :D , in fact here Blacks and Whites are the minority :p

Why would one remove the question of sex ? I think that is a perfectly legitement question on a job application. Especially depending on the job.

As for minority scholarships... I think that is pretty stupid to and yet my parents and grandparents are busy makeing up and entire family tree to prove I am like 1/64th native american so I can get a scholorship, personally I think it is stupid that I can get a scholarshipo for being a native american when You wqould never know it looking at me or any of me living family....

Because if you are to remove race from a form sex should go with it. Just as many people are not hired, or are hired, due to sex.

Women can do every job that a man can do. So why ask for the sex of the applicant? The only reason would be if you are looking for a certain sex for a job. But no applicant sjhould be refused due to sex, age or race from seeking any position, anytime, or anywhere.

As for special scholerships to schools, etc, that are based on race they should be applied to in another form after the person is accepted to the school. If someone seeks them out fine, but it should not be in the inital forms.

i agree that women and men can do the same jobs just as well as each other. but due to actual physical differences and such, sometimes i have to say that sex IS an issue. in most jobs sex has no importance and should not be a deciding factor but in some cases you have to admit that it is important.

like prison security guard for an all male prison: i believe that female security guards should not be guarding such a facility. the men in there are quite deprived and would probably herass the hell out of her just for being a female. maybe that isnt the best example but you understand where im goin with this.

Good point.........

Maybe if the job is specific like that then it would be ok for them to ask but only after the person could read a statement saying that if u are a woman then your application will be on file until a "womans" position is open...yayayayayay

Also men can do some physical labor better women but being in the construction industry I must say that any female worker I have seen can hold her own just fine.
