demo problems with XP

My 4-year old kid loves these games--can't get enough of them. So I downloaded the RS demo for him to try out before I bought it ( I bought Racer and had some problems running it on XP until I updated my driver). I noticed the sound wouldn't kick in until three or four seconds after the "exploding rocks" opening scene, so I set it to run on Windows 95 compatibility. Now the sound is fine, but I barely get past the sliding doors (which creep open much slower now that it's on 95) leading to the menu before the thing crashes to my desktop. I know it hollers for DirectX 6, but I have DirectX 8 so it should work fine, right?

Anyone have ideas on how to fix this if possible? My little Annikin would be eternally grateful

Actually, I do have DirectX 8.1, yet no dice....

I did try something on advice from another thread--went through the compatability wizard on XP and actually got the menu screen to come up. BUT....it won't let me enter my name (or any name) to get started. I get a mouse icon to click on the "new Player' button, but after that nothing. My "enter" key doesn't work, the mouse icon has vanished..the whole thing is just wacked.

Sigh...oh well, if the full version does work on XP like you said, I'll just go get that. Thanks.

try upgarding the compatiblity on that to Win98

next WinXP is hardly worth palying games with honestly, But in your case I hardly think its worth it to change OS's

if you do go back to Win98 or at least Win2k all becuase they still have DOS

WinXP doesnt have it, only a built-in emulator, and emulators are good, but not ever 100% as good as the actual

thats why you have the compatibilities there.

try also upgrading your Sound card and video drivers if you can.

Window's core program has been Exploder since 95... It was just a little less obvious. And Win2k is command prompt emulation as well.

And I would never go back to Win98... It's a timebomb. No matter what you do, you're gonna have to format and reinstall every couple of years. Win2K and XP are really the only viable options.

Edit: The Peter North wannabe up there ^ beat me... Damn.

Its core program is Explorer, so when explorer goes down, you cant open any files...

But Opal dear, that's how it is with all versions of Windows after 3.11 :D

XP is very good, but still not as stable as 2000... It's a lot prettier, though @_@

XP Home is evil incarnate, though - Pro is the only way to... To... Not crash? :D

I now have XP, and I noticed I have the same sound problem with RS (full version). It doesn't bother me, though, so I left it the way it is ;)

Maybe you could try setting it to 98 compatability (or is that possible)?

@Opal: Your Mac doesn't just need to work better...it needs to actually function o.O

XP Home is evil incarnate

Blast :D
