Ooooh, this calls for perhaps THE LONGEST POST EVAH FROM SETSUKO! And by now, you know that means a lot! :D

I'll try to keep the amounts of artists with only swedish lyrics to a minimum, unless they are good enough to mention anyway.

First (and last and always ;)) there's the Sisters of Mercy. Just the fact that they made an excellent cover of Dolly Partons 'Jolene' and the camp-singalong-song 'he's got the whole world in his hands' ("he's got the Tomahawk missile, in his haaand!") makes them the top dogs. Need other reasons? Listen to songs like 'Ribbon', 'Arenochrome', 'Burn', 'Dominion/Mother Russia', 'Heartland', 'Emma', 'The Damage Done', 'Vision Thing' and 'Doctor Jeep'. And if you call it goth, I'll come over to your house and clubber'ya.

While we're at it, we might as well mention Type O Negative, Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, Einsturzende Neubauten, Old Man Gloom, Good Speed You Black Emperor!and Ministry as well.

Then, I like more synthy music too.

The Knife is an excellent up-and-coming swedish band, their recent release 'Deep Cuts' features a mixed variation of not-so-good tracks and tracks that really blew my mind, like 'Heartbeats', 'one for you' and 'Listen now'

So is the April Tears, who won an SAMA (Swedish Alternative Music Award) in 2001 for Best Song. It was a long time since I listened to them, but they are really good live (as if you'd ever see them! :)), and worth to check out.

Then there's Kraftwerk, of course. 'Radioactivity'" must be their pinnacle, I think. No modern music would sound the same without Kraftwerk, since everyone either adopted them or tried to 'un-adopt' them so hard that their own music changed! :D

Hm. Then, there is of course hiphop. Most (99%) of all hiphop is a boring, steaming pile of clichés, but I like

Looptroop, a collective most often stationed in Gothemburg, with the best hiphop beats you'll find here. Their new album 'The Struggle Continues' might not be the best they've done (though 'fly away' is ok), but their prior works on 'Modern Day City Symphony' forgives anything, and 'Det var jag som skjöt Palme', a cooperation with PSTQ, another really good Gothemburg rap artist, is way too good to live without if you have the advantage of understanding the lyrics! :D Oh, and one of the main rappers, Promoe, made a wholly english solo album called 'Government music', that is groovy, extremely political, and a must-buy!

Timbuktu is the pinnacle of Skånsk hiphop. His double album 'T2:KontraKultur', with one record with swedish songs and one with english, was the floorfiller of 2000, especially 'MVH'. The new album 'Wått's dö madderfakking diil?' is worth to check out, too.

Svenska Akademien is the crusaders of swedish ragga, a genre that is not as silly as it sounds. They produced the songs that filled the dancefloors of every club south of Gothemburg last summer, especially 'snapphaneklanen' and 'terror', but also 'giriga labbar' and several others. Again, very political.

Mobbade Barn Med Automatvapen (bullied children with automatic rifles) has a lot of promise, and again, they hail from Gothemburg (in Sweden, we have our 'east coast vs west coast too, but less in fact that they shoot at each other as in the fact that most hiphop from the capital sucks!). Too bad they base their greatness on complex lyrics :(

The Streets: if they had the sense of realizing that twostep sucks more than a sucking sucker on a suckfest, they'd be the best group of England. Avoid the "Artful Dodger wannabe" tracks (*eugh!* or worse: Craig ****in David*), and you'll find the kind of innovative and mixed music you've started to expect from Britain.

Le 3ième Oeil, Supréme NTM, Prodige Namor, I am and Bideew Bou Bess. What can I say? French hiphop is the best in the world. Everyone who hasn't noticed has been living under a rock the past ten years.

Oh, you want some american hiphop? Lemme see...

Cypress Hill: sometimes great, sometimes way off, but always a lot of 'tude.

DMX: one of the few who can be political, serious, ghetto, gangster and preacher at the same time, without making it sound strange, and staying cool at the same time. How does he do it? 'I am DMX' has one of the best hiphop videos ever (perhaps because all hiphop videos sucks)

Dead Prez were over here and played recently, and they were great. Haven't listened that intensely to their records, but they can't be bad.

Oh! I almost forgot NWA and Public Enemy! So damn important groups. "You are now about to witness the power of street knowledge", indeed!

And I must admit that even though I hate most of their lyrics, you can't deny that Wu-Tang Clan has made a lot of good hiphop, especially '36 chambers'. Most of the solo albums are good, too.

While we are at black music, we can't go without blues. And jazz.

Son House and other such really old blues... yummy. Especially when they have one attempt at recording every song. One. And if they start out wrong, they just begin all over, without stopping the recorder. Now that's lo-fi!

Billie Holliday, oh my god! I recently got a cheap box release with her 30's-40's material, and it's to die for! Same goes for Ella Fitzgerald, Luis Armstrong, Miles Davis and the other pillars of pre-WW2 jazz. After that, it went down the drain, though new, weird constellations appear, like Jazzanova. Oh, and don't forgot Monica Zetterlund, the only swedish jazz singer to have dominated the american jazz scene. And oh, did she ever!

So, what happens if you mix this music with the dance scene of the early 90's, jamaican dub, and the boredom of Bristol, where people doesn't seem to DO anything else than music? You get triphop. Which is a good thing.

Morcheeba is good. Not the best, but good.

From my custom title, it's not hard to figure out I like Sneaker Pimps, and 'Bloodsport' is filled with great tracks such as 'Kiro TV', 'Small Town Witch', Loretta Young Silks' and 'Bloodsport'.

Massive attack, and it's mainstay member Tricky, has the best hiphop version of triphop. 'Messanine' is the best this far, since I haven't listened to their freshly released album. Oh, and Tricky did a duette project with one of my idols, Björk. She's so good, I almost forgot her! :)Gorillaz made the best triphop album this side of the year 2000.

Though, all these triphop bands pales in comparison to another Bristol band, Portishead. One of my first favourite band, and propably will be my last one after I bore of all other music. The sweetness of the jazz influences, combined with laid-back scratching and soft vibes makes for an unique experience. If you haven't heard it yet: shame on you. If you don't like it: prepared to be treated like used toilet paper. j/k :D

More soft music? Well, Stina Nordenstam surely has a unique sound, and might be the best singer in Sweden. Hell, the world, according to me. And she has made the best cover of 'Purple Rain' ever! Respect!

Belle & Sebastian is ok too, and so is Sophie Zelmani. Neutral Milk Hotel provides more of that good emo music, and when everyone are drunk, sitting at an afterparty, surrounded by your closest friends, the pure feeling of euforia can only be concluded by shouting along in 'in the aeroplane over the sea'. Just thinking of it makes me immensely happy as I am writing this. Kristofer Åström & Hidden Truck is kinda the same, and so is Mojave 3. Space rock has the same kind of sedative effects, and I like the likes of Mogwai.

Then, we have Moloko. That they have taken their name from A Clockwork Orange is reasons enough to like them, but the music helps a lot too.

Seems like I am saving some of the best for the end, since I have yet to mention the giants Nick Cave and Tom Waits. So good it's a crime to own a copy of their records if you live in Ohio. PJ Harvey is good too, but a bitch if you have to do the catering for her. Did I mention the Levellers? No? How could I miss them? Death in Vegas can't decide wether to make ****ty music, or the best on earth. So they do both. Manu Chao can make me happy, no matter how sad I am. Same goes for Cake. Bob Dylan might be the best songwriter you have over there. And how could I miss Placebo? They rocked so hard at Arvika 2001 that I was muddy up to my stomach, from all the people jumping around! Forget Roxette, A-teens, and all that rubbish, Bob Hund is a better representative for swedish pop. Geniuses, they are ineed. And Moby isn't that bad, either.

The Soundtrack to Chat noir, chat blanc is pure joy. Same goes for the soundtrack from Nightmare before christmas. I love Danny Elfman's soundtracks, and Tim Burton's movies, so it's a perfect match.

Some days, my punker friends wrestles me down and forces me to listen to, well, punkish music. That's how I learned to, not without a fight, liking The Donnas, Dead Kennedys, The Ramones, Restarts, The Gits, Turbonegro, Dead Moon and Damage Deposti. Oh, and being drunk makes me like oi-punk. A lot. Flailing with boots, that's the way to enjoy a party! ;)

Hm. Propably I've missed like, 10 times as much as I listed. But I can't go on for ever, that would take all night, and seriously maim Lucasforums servers. Just wait, and I'll do the "setsuko standard 20 edits", and we might have my longest post ever! :D

EDIT: Added some. Well, every time I press the 'Save Changes', I come up with ten artists that I just can't let out. Damn you for making this thread! Oh, and I've used more smilies and vBcode than Lucasforums allow. That's the first time ever for me!

Just checked this post; 1 600 words, and growing. My god. I seriously spend to much time on this forum! And I seriously take music much too seriously!!!
