Sorry, but I couldn't let that one pass without comment. Don't want to start a historical debate.

OK, that was poorly written on my part. Technically, from my point of view, UK was the only helpful ally to us (us = US troops of WWII. I guess we did help you instead of the other way around, but what about Pacific theatre? WWII is not limited to Europe, you know...)

But what you said about the French was worse than what I wrote about UK being the only good ally. French Resistance maybe. French army?

Did you ever see that auction XERXES posted for a rare French Battle Flag? It was white...

*** I don't wanna discuss this anymore. I was wrong and I'll admit that, but this is getting to much like those Senate Chambers for my liking...

The One it was actuially December 1941 when America joined the war (sorry I'm a History student) and Katarn07 if Britain did not beat Hitler at the battle of Britain then the whole planet would be speaking German by now. I just wanted to know how many people are from England here because it does seem like a predmoinantly an American forum.

No, The_One is technically correct about America not doing anything until '42, they did declare war on Japan and Germany in December.

Also, the British nor the Americans beat Hitler, he killed himself, as did most of the Nazi Officers.

And I might not have said it above, so I'll say it here. I know nothing about Pacific Theatre! And since they did fight there, that is why I am complementing you guys. It's not like I am critisizing you... Grr, like I said, to much like the Chambers.

*runs*

*** Battle of Britain? That was in 1941. WWII ended in '45. What does that have to do with the defeat of Hitler? Oh yeah, and if Hitler were smart and decided to work more on the A-Bomb and produce more Jet Meschermits (SP?), the Allies would have been whooped by the Axis. They had far superior technology. Just look at the size of their tanks, planes, and guns compared tot he Allies' weapons...

I would like to consider myself a WWII "buff", but do not know alot about the Pacific.

You might be able to call me a American European Theatre WWII Buff.

What is a buff anyhow?

We could argue about all battles winning that war. All battles played their own role in the taking of Germany and the Pacific. As long as they were won, then it is good.

And why are you all arguing with me! I am agreeing with you. Leave me alone!

"Why do I keep coming here then?"

Really? My grandfather fought in Burma too, but I'm not sure which regiment. To be honest, he has refused to speak about his experiences over there...but I have it on good authority he woke up screaming for a few years after the war had ended. :(

Sadly, I don't know how much longer he'll be with us...he's in hospital with a broken hip, partial kidney failure and God knows what else. I guess he's been lucky to make it to 90 years old.

Anyway...enough about the war. Let's try and keep this thread on track, shall we? :)

Yeah, lucky it's a while since I studied WWII then - there are some very interesting areas of history, totally neglected by national curriculums and such - everything seems to be centred around WWII these days.

I'm very interested in the Cold War, and the Russian Revolutions - then later the rise of Stalin, all fascinating.

Anyway, Sivy B, where is it you live then?
