...the best desktop computer? In this month's issue of Maximum PC they review three top of the line PCs.

They are:

  1. The DELL XPS
  2. VOODOO pc f-class: F-510 stealth
  3. ALIENWARE: Area 51
    [/list=1]

    ALIENWARE: Area 51 v3_prd_configurator_saucer_silver.jpg

    Pros:
    • Best Price tag: $2999 fully loaded (Geforce 5900 Ultra, dual 120GB HD, flat-panel 19inch, Logitech z-680 speakers, intel PIIIIc 3ghz, 1GB DDR400 ram, and more). The dell is $4000+ and the Voodoo is $7000!
    • Most original design. You may love it or hate it, but it is very creative and the easiest to mod. The Alien face lights up.
    • Lot's of extra cases available including Space Black, Conspiracy Blue, Cyborg Green, Saucer Silver, Plasma Purple, Martian Red, and Nova Yellow

Cons:

  • You may scare the neighbors with this machine. It's X-files in the living room!
  • Comes with WinXP home, not Pro.
  • 1 less optic drive than the other two.

VOODOO: pc f-class: F-510 stealth homepage_r2_c1.jpg

Pros:

  • Custom welded GeForceFX 5900 Ultra that allows you overlock it much higher than normal cards.
  • Exclusive: A specially designed water-cooling system
  • Creative Labs Megaworks 6.1 Dolby surround speakers + Soundblaster Live Audigy II Platinum = Awesome sound!

Cons:

  • The price tag! A whopping $6918!
  • Proprietary: A specially designed water-cooling system. If it breaks, you can't fix it (only they can).
  • Did I mention the price?

DELL: XPS XPS_eseries_angle.jpg

Pros:

  • The quietest of the three.
  • Cool looking, more modern than the others. A gaming PC for the family.
  • Best warranty

Cons:

  • Who wants to see the huge DELL logo on the side? not me.
  • Proprietary: Can only use DELL parts. Bad for modders
  • Best system has an ATI 9800 Pro 128mb DDR
  • Cooling problems lead to strange performance

Overall: All pcs we're tested with the same equipment except that the Dell had the ATI 9800 while the others had the brand new (and fastest) GeForce 5900FX Ultra. For the money, I'd buy the Alienwares. It's a little more exotic than the others, but a much better value.

Who do you think has the best and baddest pc right now?

theres no question about it, Alienware.

Oh and PC Gamer gave that same kind of Comparison between the three computers, like, 3 months ago. I think PC gamer is more up to date than Maximum PC. Just my opinion

Oh, how is this a quiz?

Maximum PC July 2003. :D

Don't get me wrong, I love PC gamer (for game and tech info), but Maximum PC specialize in hardware reviews. These cases have been out for a little while, but the versions they got were brand new designs. The GeForce 5900 Ultra has just been released. This was only a small bit of info from the 5 page article.

Quiz: Basically some people are die hard brand-junkies (DELL dudes). I want to know if it's worth the money because of the brand?

sometimes its worth the money for a specific Brand, especially Alienware, who offers great warrantys and assemble their PC with great precision. But sometimes, it doesn't matter. ABS computers are cheap, not a well known company, but put together some pretty good computers ( according to PC gamer, 93 or so percent good) So, people just have to be pickey. But i still wouldnt be caught dead with a Dell :D

Dell support has pulled by bacon out of the fire more than once. But if you consider yourself an advanced user there's no reason to buy a Dell.

I wouldn't get an XPS anyway. I'd get one of the cheaper, plainer-looking models and spend the extra money on maxing it out with top-o'-th'-line components.

My next system will be DIY anyway...

I'm going by what was in the review. :p

I like Falcon too, but they don't paint the front of the case and they don't mod it like they should. For the same price you can get the same paint job at a autobody shop. Imagine the creativity of an Alienware with the paint job from Falcon.

cool

Me and My dad had a sort of "nerdy" father son project. We went to the local computer show and bought all out parts and are building our own custom PC. We're are still not done with it, but were gonna call it "P.C" since my name is Pete and his is Chuck :p pretty cool :D

Here, i found a good example of a no-name brand that does a fine job.

The Gamer's Edge DX-W

Pros- Low price ( $2,895) comparible to Dell and Alienware;fast, stylish and functunal case

Cons- In the past year, Velocity Micro ( the company that makes these) went from a three-year warrenty to a one year

Bottom Line- It lacks the famous name, but Velocity Micro knows how to give Gamers an Edge

Score: 90%

This comes straight from the August 2003 issue in the hardware section
