must admit i lost all interest in sonic when my little bro got better at me than me:- hence the game must suck :D

I remember buying mine with my first ever pay cheque It came with Arnold Palmer golf if i remember rightly.

seriously though, i dunno where my megadrive ended up, i never sold it, perhaps its in the loft?!!?

The oldest game that i loved was a mad game for my Commodore Plus 4, it was called icicle works and you played the part of santa running round collecting presents (ironically)

How can you people all love your terrible, ancient systems?! I'm far too much into my PlayStation2

heh! playstation2?? talk about an old, out of date system... :D

I think that people have different expectations between console and PC FPS games.... i thought nightfire sucked on the PC, but i like Agent under fire on the GC... probably not that much difference, but different expectations...

Anyone who likes FF or Zelda should definately look up chrono trigger.... awesome game.

Im almost tempted to get a GBA SP, just because they are bringing out all the old classics... RK+, Zelda etc...

Mind you, not all games still work as well.... i loved Xenon 2 and Gods, but cant get into either of them now.... speedball 2 on the other hand still rules...

i agree with rhett. most/many games today are all about flash, its how good of graphics you have, so you can pull in all the money you possibly can right away, either that or it has a tie in with a recently released movie/book. i would gladly wait an extra 6-12 months for games if they um, introduced actual good gameplay into them, with engrossing and compelling storylines. some games today have those, but they are few from my POV, and many times they dont get teh attention they deserve.

You guys have gotta remember that without these "ancient" systems, there would be no PS2, or XBOX, or PC games even. The new stuff has been influenced in so many ways by the benchmark original genre titles - games like Mario, Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Streets of Rage (to name a few). They've all shaped the style of future games to come, defined the genres. Don't simply dismiss them as "old" and "tattered" games: you should be greatly of them.

Also, I definitely agree with Rhett and Bill. So much work and effort is put into the sheer presentation of the game, that the most important aspect, the gameplay, is quickly added on at the end. Obviously this is a gross generalisation, but it is true that game developers focus too much on the visuals, rather than the playability. I mean if I wanted to just sit and look at lovely graphics, I would watch a movie like Episode II (XD). They're missing the point of making games nowadays.

some of those old games are great, classics. there are some games that are instantly recognized when you bring up a system, like for sega you instantly recognize sonic, nintendo 64- legend of zelda ocarina of time, and goldeneye, playstation- final fantasy, grand turismo, xbox-halo; these are the games that are referred to as classic, not all old games are classics but a few are

It's no longer a small market, where the main goal was to please the gamers. It's now a bigger seller than movies worldwide, so one of the highest seen things on the face of the earth, so companies have cashed in on it.

Sadly that also means trying to appeal to as many as possible, at the cost of quality in many parts of the game, other than graphics. Some people get hungry for money and release what is relative junk, but still get more than enough money to do a sequel and spend the rest on parties and wine.

Until games went mainstream, it was quality all the way, and delayed release dates were expected. Graphics definitely do help, immersion is the name of the game now. Splinter Cell struggles on the PS2 without the extra graphics power to give the darker lighting that was on the XBOX version, which is part of the game.

It's more of a case of trying to find the good stuff amongst the bad, not buying every piece of junk in a genre because you like that style of game.

also, back in the day, most of these classic games were made by a few blokes in their bedrooms... or at the the most cottage industries... now it has turned into a multimillion dollar industry... which leaves very little room for small teams to make innovative stuff.

Can you see anyone making a game about Llamas these days???:D

THe movie industry has countered this by creating a seperate "Art House" scene for the small, odd films that works alongside the mainstream hollywood blockbusters... but apart from the odd online distributed game this doesn't seem to have happened for computer games yet...

(although 2 of the best games of recent times have been Galactic Civilizations and Combat Misson, both of which had crummy graphics, got no mainstream exposure and were developed by small teams...)

*Climbs out of basement*

FINALLY after fifteen years i have modified my Duck HUnt game to let me shoot the freakin dog.

I also agree, Sonic is a classic, so what if the backgrounds aren't awesome, It's pure entertainment. I still play it when I go to my uncle's house. My friend and I also some times play Duck Hunt, SUper MArio Bros. 3, Starfox and Starfox 64.
