  1. The remi detractors often point to terror island as proof that the game is unfinished but if you ask for their opinion on that island that only takes up a small part of the game and is home to nothing but herman toothrot and one navigation based puzzle, they’ll say “i love dinky, thanks for asking.”
  2. The ferrymans boat in tale’s afterlife has a distinct mechanical sound when in motion. It’s almost as if it’s a pirates of the caribbean style dark ride.
  3. I wonder if it was at one point though. That squid positioned itself as your enemy only to die when you weren’t looking. Maybe originally guybrush killed the squid, which checked off the pamphlet, which unlocked the new ending, which killed the cat that ate the rat that lived in the house that jack built.
  4. I think it was just a town meeting. It was just an excuse for certain locations to not be accessible until you’ve progressed to a certaIn point. If you leave the scumm bar and head straight to wally’s for example there’s a sign at the door saying “at town meeting. Be back soon. “ They don’t open up until after you’ve visited the docks.
  5. Remi definitely seemed like the most loving portrayal so far but it was sort of problematic. I was sure all of the little cutscenes of elaine finding out about the stuff guybrush does on his adventures while she’s not around was going to lead to some sort of conflict between the two. Then they meet up and discover that elaine obviously already knows what guybrush is like and loves and accepts him for it. That’s sort of sweet but guybrush really is a monster in this one, possibly more so than ever before. So maybe her love and acceptance isn’t healthy. Maybe enabler is the exact right word to be using here. But she’s a very sweet enabler and it’s a super cute unhealthy codependency.
  6. Well guybrush drowns in secret & is melted by acid in revenge. effete lafoot (i think that was his name) surely died when you threw him from the cliff in curse right? Also there’s the moment guybrush sees his own floating corpse under water. ozzie was crushed in escape and a load of people died in tales, some on screen, some off screen. To be fair though i think the difference i was thinking of was less the fact that it wasn’t shown but more the fact that it wasn’t even confirmed. All of the deaths were implied. Lechuck threatened iron rose, lila hinted towards killing madison and trent just stopped showing up after squaring off with flair. The deaths are assumed but also if any of those characters showed up in a sequel I don’t think anybody would be surprised. A kid could play this game and not even register that any deaths happened. for clarity though, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I was just sort of thinking out loud.
  7. Yeah trent did next to nothing and was then presumably killed off screen by flair. Sort of a shame but they only had so much time and i think they dished out the character development correctly. side note: i wonder if every death happening off screen was to help make this one more kid friendly.
  8. It’s a good question. Do the surrealist meta elements become the main theme of the series from now on or does it stay a simple but enjoyable pirate franchise. If ron and dave keep it going what would they prefer? If someone else takes over will they feel obligated to lean further in to the weirdness? If it were me i think i’d make a straight pirate game with occasional references to the weirdness and some background details that hint toward answering some of the questions this game brought up. You’d really have to dig for them though and they wouldn’t give you that much.
  9. Just the once. For some reason i knew i needed to make carla forgive me but using the forgiveness frog never occurred to me. I think because of some of the wording used when the characters talked about it, i assumed it was to be used to gain forgiveness for an action from a previous game. Then i got hung up on the idea that it must be for wally.
  10. Hook! Of course. Counted it for secret. Forgot it for escape.
  11. I was also thinking about flambe. A very one note character but instantly likable and, dare i say, relatable. I think i’m going to go with gullet though. Great voice acting, beautiful poetry and some of the funniest lines. “I am your deity of choice. A cruel and vengeful deity!” “Perhaps we can arrange a bit of roast duck under glass for your majesty” Imo returns secret mvp.
  12. His favourite food is tentacles with daisy sauce. I think it might be random which ingredient you need to go and get but i’ve got tentacles from the beach in one playthrough and daisies from near the monkey head in another. Not sure what you’re talking about in regards to a missing photo. Pic?
  13. I thought this was somewhat derivative if planet threepwood in escape tbh. I kept waiting for a joke or reference to it but it never happened. I guess it’s sort of funny that guybrush has twice visited a museum devoted to himself and no one there recognised or believed him.
  14. I don’t know how true that is. The main story was great and obviously you didn’t think it was just there to support the meta stuff until the ending revealed itself. So surely you had 8-12 hours of great monkey island story with the last few minutes replaced with a scene more interesting than the 6th confrontation with lechuck could have hoped to be. I can’t imagine the mind set that would lead you to think “the ending didn’t provide closure so that whole story was worthless.” let me know if I’m mischaracterising you there but that’s how I’m interpreting what you’ve said and it makes no sense to me. I would have got this game for part 2 alone but we also got 4 other parts all of which were great and none of which were diminished by the lack of a lechuck fight or a magical treasure chest waiting at the end.
  15. I like how in escape you give carla and otis cushy government jobs and carla used that to work her way up to govenor while otis is literally exactly where we found him at the beginning of secret. This makes perfect sense for both of these characters to me. Carla is a driven hard working person who will make the most out of what she’s given and otis will always end up being the lazy cowardly thief in a jail cell no matter what opportunities come his way.
  16. So depending on what you say to elaine in your first encounter she’ll either just walk away or do the whole “you say bye first” thing. If she just walks away, guybrush looks dejected for a moment.
  17. I’m pretty sure it’s because you stole the eye patch which the curator says is the most valuable part of the collection. This ended up being a headache for me when it came to getting the bragging trophy as I hadn’t told the currator i was looking for the secret yet.
  18. More nothing thoughts… The plaque in the theme park at the end implies that the series is actually set in modern day. I don’t know why but that really surprised me. I for some reason thought that the pirate world was early 1700s and the end of monkey 2 was just later that same century. No idea why i thought that, probably the clothes. Everyone has period costumes on (including guybrush in this game) but apparently THAT was the anachronism and everything we previously thought to be anachronistic was actually appropriate.
  19. I think more games may have been implied in return itself. When you fill the scrapbook and get the letter from ron and dave you’re then shown the back cover of the book with a note from guybrush saying “note to self, get more paper for the rest of my adventures” i know that was on the back page from you first booting up the game but it does feel very intentional to give you a summary of return, a message from r&d and then a tease for more to come.
  20. I guess this ones open to interpretation but imo you could definitely just play the 3 gilbert games and not realise there were other games in between.
  21. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but i just walked past the scumm bar for the millionth time and a bottle was thrown through the window from inside. Guybrush had to dodge and then said “hey watch it!” Now the window stays smashed whenever i go back. Love it.
  22. Just noticed that some time later you find yourself stood behind the voodoo ladies cauldron which is a very similar shape and size to this pond. She then throws a toy ship in which briefly floats before she speaks crypticly about how guybrush has experienced this all before… is that interesting? I genuinely don’t know 😂
  23. Monkey island 3aa confirmed. What does everyone suppose ron has planned? Has there been any blog posts over the years? Is there any truth to the rumours that it’s a van winslow dating sim with fps elements?
