I would like to also add that it really seems like you're watching the side of the church, at least how it's seen from the outside. There's that little part I highlighted, even though it should be much higher, it does seem to me like they were trying to keep the structure of the street intact, even if the inside of the church doesn't much up. The outside of Mêlée and the interiors were probably done by different artists, so that could explain the inconsistencies. The church could actually have a hidden elevator inside a wall, used by LeChuck to come and go from Monkey/Dinky Island whenever he pleases, which would explain how he gets so fast to Mêlée Island without his ghost ship to deal with Guybrush and then comes with the ship to kidnap Elaine. I always felt that Escape translated Mêlée Island fairly well in 3D. I did play Escape before Secret though, so that might be why, but even going back from Escape to Secret it never felt "wrong" to me and I recognized the key places quite easily. To me it always felt like the same place, and not only because they tell you that it is.

POLL: Which version of SOMI do you prefer?
Wally B. replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in General Discussion
It's weird, because I've grown up with the VGA floppy version, so when I played the CD and Stan's theme came up I was very weirded out, but got accustomed to it very quickly and I still really enjoy it, I think it's a cool addition to the soundtrack. When playing EGA or VGA floppy, it does feel like there should be some music there, at least when you're negotiating with Stan. MT-32 has way better sounds than the CD version to me though, the Special Edition music had the potential to be the definitive soundtrack at least, but it has arrangements that feels too much out of place to me. -
I think it might be thanks to that video game history foundation video with Ron, talking about all the behind the scenes and cut content of the game. I know that was the thing that really made me take interest in that version. I really love the close-ups in both version, but I find the EGA ones having more charm and they're actually funny (debatable if ironically or not, I think they were made funny on purpose)

I never understood why or how that stump joke could ever have been taken seriously by some people until I played the english version. The italian version makes it clear that it's a joke by asking you to press all buttons on the keyboard and to insert the floppy disks all at once. On the topic of badmouthing the VGA version, going international for a minute here, there are differences in translations between the EGA and VGA version (at least in Italy) in particular regarding some more crude terms, such as LeChuck calling Melee pirates "cacasotto" (people who poop their pants) in the EGA version and "fifoni" (wimps) in the VGA one. Also while the EGA translates the chapter screens with the giant blue font in italian, while the VGA keeps the english chapter screen with a small subtitle in the normal game font in white.

Oh, yeah, you're right, having played them in italian, I guess I mistook it for something from EMI 😅

Yes, I do remember Guybrush being uncharacteristically horny in that game, especially for being a married man

In Return to Monkey Island we finally find out that the world of Monkey Island is actually the real world and that real life is actually a video game. The final chapter is actually Guybrush coming out from the computer to pull us in and live as a pirate by his side (maybe, idk, you decide). Also, the secret of Monkey Island IS the giant robot monkey, built by Lemonhead in a moment of boredom Also also, all the different Guybrush designs are because clones

What if that's actually what he had in mind? Could it be that that weird Star Trek tweet and that "how does Guybrush gets from the docks to the lookout were actually a hint to a time-traveler Guybrush and that all those anachronisms in the games are all an anomaly in the space-time continuum caused by said time travel?????????? Or maybe I'm just delusional, don't mind me...

She pretty much confirmed that what LeChuck told about her was true though, the game even highlights the fact that LeChuck wants revenge against her for being used in her "scheme". By the end of the game Elaine doesn't trust her, while Guybrush I guess still kinda does. Also in the post-credit scene she looked pretty evil looking to me...
-
I think you might be referring to this. Still doesn't mean there isn't a in-universe reason for it to be like that. (Even though they probably won't address it)

It's possible that it was always Ron's intention to make the Voodoo Lady an ambiguous character. After all, she did say to Guybrush to go find Big Woop in Monkey2 and we all know how THAT turned out! I really like the Tales twist and it does explain some small incongruences in the other games regarding her character (like the fact that in Curse she said that Big Woop was evil and that Guybrush was an idiot for looking for it, after saying in Revenge that it was his only hope). I am actually more curious to find out what they do with Herman though. I mean, Ron confirmed he went back to be a regular cook, so what happened since Escape? Did he just got hit in the head again? Was he never Horatio Torquemada to beginning with? Did he just get into philosophy again???

You make some interesting points, but you're forgetting that a new Monkey Island game doesn't necessarily need to be made by Ron & co. Also "internet drama" is kind of a stupid reason not to make a game or any form of art. I do agree that after this one, I would like to see Ron focusing on an original game idea (probably that RPG he was trying to make before Return). I think we kind of had this situation before with Escape. It had a pretty definitive ending for 9 years, even though it was kind of a stupid one (maybe that's why some people hated it, in retrospect). Thinking about it now, Guybrush being thrown off the cliff at the end could have meant that there weren't any more cliffhangers and that it was meant to be the final chapter of the series.

It wouldn't bother me at all if it was. We get to uncover the secret of Monkey Island, in a game made by the creator of the series itself. It's kind of like the end of an era. I'm open to the possibility of new games after this one, either sequels or spin-offs, but to me this will probably the end of the Monkey Island "saga". (Unless we get a completely open ended finale with a lot of unresolved plot points and character arcs, in that case nevermind...)

Best henchperson, because we haven’t voted in literal years

Winslow should be on this list, as Murray's henchman Guybrush's henchman. -
I can totally get behind this, it's actually how I feel about the game and why I like it. But my point is (and it's another unpopular opinion, i guess) is that Escape is a game that knows what it wants to be (even though it may not be of everyone's liking) and so, to me, it feels more coherent and a better experience than Tales. Tales might feel more familiar though, and that's why people like it over Escape. Also I think Escape (when you get in the right mindset) is kinda easy. Certainly easier than Monkey 2 at least. And the pc controls are good and easy to grasp.

I don't know if my expectations are way too high, but I was hoping we would get the same level of exploration Escape gave us, while being able to island-hopping Monkey 2 style. That meaning fully explorable Mêlée, Brr Muda, Terror Island. Then at the end of the game we get Monkey Island. It would be interesting if we could come and go to Monkey Island as we please, it would be different and if there is a story reason it could work

I originally thought of voting for Largo but then I thought about it and I went with Bob. I really like the whole pathetic nature of Bob and it makes him really likeable to me. He also was the most capable, thinking about it... Also where's the Murray love?? He was part of LeChuck's crew and followed his orders, so why not include him in the mix? -
I have some unpopular opinions regarding Tales. I don't really get what all the fuss is about and why people like it so much over Escape: I don't like the Morgan-Guybrush-Elaine-Lechuck "love conflict" they have going on. It has the art style I like less in all of the games (not including special editions), even though I still like it. The puzzles are really easy, even though they are interesting in concept. It's overly dramatic for a Monkey Island game. It has unfortunately the worst music because of the limitations of the WiiWare. I didn't mind the same character models reused for other characters, I think it's really cool how they made each pirate on Flotsam feel really different and unique with that limitation. I have some other gripes with it and decided to end with a positive unpopular opinion because with all that said, I still really like the game and what it was trying to achieve, and I really have fun playing it. On another note, I thought the Ransom DLC was pointless and kind of ruined the whole joke with the character. I think the bleeps over curse words are way funnier than the curse words themselves
