The only problem with hell being the secret is that it’s not really that secret. Sure, only the cannibals and Herman are around on the island (who knows all about it). But, somewhat foreshadowing Curse, the cannibals also say they used to have cruise ship tours on the island — and hell itself would surely be a prize destination.

Do monkey ribs have that weird two-colour thing going on, with the brown/gold bits? I couldn’t find any examples in the 30 seconds I spent on Google, but then there are lots of types of simian.

That whole sequence was quite inspired with the grog machine, music that sounds like the MI2 tunnels, etc.

The secret is surely the incredible abilities of the monkeys. They can command a ship, play the piano, and who knows what else.

I am pretty sure it’s the presence of a gigantic robotic monkey that’s the secret. If you look closely at the skeleton, it’s strangely metallic. Could it be operated, I wonder.

And so the cycle of making the same discoveries and getting excited about them continues. Now, wait until I tell you guys about the deleted boot image I found on the floppy disks.

If there is any bad blood like that about section could suggest, I’m not sure there’s any way of confronting it without it making them feel awkward as hell and probably not leading to a sincere answer anyway. These guys aren’t exactly going to start slagging each other off.

This is all quite fascinating. I’d made the observation myself a few weeks ago after someone posted some VGA vs CD screenshots in Dosbox (therefore eliminating ScummVM inconsistencies) but we didn’t really get anywhere with figuring out why. It definitely looks to me like the VGA palettes are right and suit the scene’s lighting, whereas the CD ones indeed look over-brightened.

Listen… in these parts it’s ‘ReMI’.

I’m expecting ReMI to not only fail to concretely clarify anything about the deeper lore of MI1&2, but actually make it even more ambiguous, driving fans mad for another 30 years. 😀 The mystery and feeling of there being something else there that you can’t quite grasp is such a fundamental part of the original two games’ atmosphere that I think a spiritual sequel to them would be robbing both those and itself if it gave everything up and tried to play the explain game. I will thoroughly enjoy a ReMI that continues to play with those themes in a non-commital manner, rather than trying to make literal sense of them like Curse. Creating ambiguity around what has and hasn’t happened canonically in the series will only enhance this wonderful effect.

I see. So it could just be for space reasons. It’s not just me though, right? That art looks noticeably more warped and wacky than basically anything else in MI2? It really wouldn’t have surprised me if you’d said it was concept art for DOTT. In particular it reminds me of this scene, thanks to the obvious parallel that is the pipes. 😄

It might be they decided that was a bit too wacky for MI2 rather than just cutting it for disk space/gameplay speed reasons. It is definitely a step beyond.

Man, this one really drives home the DOTT-esque aspect of MI2's graphics.

I thought it was a sneak peek at LeChuck at first, similar to the possible Guybrush on the trailer ship. Hat and a huge, bushy beard. Upon closer inspection it’s equally possible it’s someone wearing a jacket and a hat. But probably not a nurse. 😀

Adds some interesting context to the set-up of the game which is otherwise very quickly glossed over. I’m not sure if it’s better or worse!
