My little rant:

I goto to play almost any game and thier are so calle "1337 d00ds" Who think they are the sh!T, when you own them they are like "h3y d00d, j00 h4x0rz, 4d/\/\1/\/ b00t h1m!" While I'm think "wtf?"

[/endrant]

These guys are uber noobs, thinking they are the best and when I kill them, they say I hack. Which brings me to my question, How did 1337 speak come to be and what little a$$ made it!

I was able to read it almost right away but I still dont like

I think they just feel that they are special because they can turn numbers and symbols into horribly misspelled words that take twice the time to write and for some people even longer to read

but I dont think that these (mostly annoying) people will stop it soon so just get used to it

The official story is that it started on BBS's (bulletin board services) before the world wide web.

The idea was that people trafficing "illegal" stuff (like hacks, bootleg or pirated programs, etc) wanted to disguise or hide their activity from prying admins but still make it easy for their friends to find. So they spelled things using numbers or spaces or fancy characters, etc so anybody looking at it would know what was meant but searches wouldn't locate and nuke their stuff.

That's how we got "warez" and that sort of thing. Eventually it just sort of became a "hip" thing because people either saw those folks as "pioneers" (of whatever) in that scene or else the people in the scene thought of themselves as pioneers, etc and the mystique took over.

Then it became associated with "script kiddies" (mostly due to IRC I'm guessing) which is what people called third rate hackers or people who didn't really know that much computer voodoo they just used other people's programs and did dumb stuff online to annoy people.

Now I think most people just use it as a joke (because it still gets some people really riled up). It doesn't really save any time or space...

Last time I saw 1337 heavily used outside counter-strike was during the whole Napster/Metallica fiasco.

And there's a lot to speaking it, but there's so many variations it's crazy.

I'm fluent, if you haven't figured it out yet.

EDIT: Stupid spelling mistakes... God forbid the nazis are out at 2 in the morning.

i speak "|337" but not all the time, only when my friends use it so |337 isn't all that bad, but they're using it like it's some awsome powerful awsome people only language, I nag them on chat room, then i just get fed up and say something in heavy |337 so they leave

Ah. So this whole Leet talk is 'Web Pirate' lingo?

That's kinda a cool backround. I'm not saying I support what they do. I just like pirates in general. Argh! See? Who doesn't like to hear a good ol' pirate story? And the origin of the '1337' is like... a new age pirate story.....

....fine!....I'm going back to sleep....

well, before I read Kurgan's post, I didn't really know what the purpose of spelling things like that other than it was just something different to do. So thanks Kurgan, I learned something new today.

BTW, I haven't seen you areound in a while Kurgan, how you doin'?

He's been at the Jedi Academy board.

Anyways, It's fun to do when you use it as a joke or to get peope out of a chat room:D I think I used that on JO a while back when I was done playing for the day, I'ld toss on a different name, load up my scripts, and then hit y(I think) and it said,"|-|3y j00 /\/00|33rz, 1 @|\/| t3h |_||33r |)|_||)3, @/\/|) 1 \/\/1|| |<1|| j00!!!11!!11" or something like that. Then I'ld get like 50 kills in about 20 minutes or less, and then get kicked. I hate the talk, it's just that I loved to have a little bit of fun:D Sometimes I will use that online or in my text messages to confuse my friends:D

PS:It took me almost 3-5 minutes to type that. It says, "Hey you noobers, I am the uber dude, and I will kill you!!!!!!!!!" That took about 15 seconds.

Bring me his head, and I will pay you $500 American dollars. After that, we shall feast, dance, and drink wine from his/her empty skull. :)
