I have not yet finished my first time through (very, very close ...), and have to say this is the best gaming experience I've ever had. I make it no secret that Star Wars games top my 'favorite ever' lists for games, but this tops them all - lightsaber, force powers, SW locales and environs, excellent characterizations, story and NPC's with depth that I care about ... just plain greatness ...

I would say that it probably is overall. It does have pretty much everything, and I think it does the best job of making you feel a part of the Star Wars universe (ironically much better than Galaxies in this regard from what I have heard).

That being said, the nice thing for me is that it does not make my other favorite Star Wars games "obselete". For fast action and lightsaber combat in both MP and SP I have JO/JA. For starfighter and space simulation I have X-Wing Alliance. All these games have vastly different styles and provide very different content, so they do not get old or less fun after playing KOTOR. I find I tend to still play all of these because I am in the mood for different things at different times. I am very happy to have the variety that these games provide.

But in the end KOTOR is overall probably the best Star Wars game ever in terms of achieving the goals of its genre.

very well said Prime. my thoughts exactly. and though i do still like the experience the Jedi Knight games brought, i feel KOTOR has been far more accurate in it's Star Wars atmosphere. it just feels completely correct in every way ambience wise. (lightsaber duels now actually feel like duels :)) this game is great. and not only is the atmosphere perfect, but you learn things about parts of the star wars universe not previously known as you go along.

it's almost like watching another movie. the same feel you know, you're nobody with a blaster becoming an uber-jedi and exploring the universe. i hope they will make it into a series myself.

They haven't mentioned anything about the Xbox and PS2 versions in a while. Are they still happening?

It seems like the PS3 and XBox2 will be out first.

To bad the concept of Galaxies is great, but the implementation is terrible. Have fun deleivering those packages over and over and over and over...

As for the hugeness of the XBox/PS2 release (if indeed it happens at all), it will be hindered by the poor reviews of the PC game.

The KOTOR XBox reviews only increased the number of PC sales.

I got KOTOR today, and YES, I LOVE it ! It took me a little while to get use to the movement, I was expecting a Neverwinter style camera, but thats cool.....

Its really hard to say something is the BEST. There are too many different genres, even in flight sims you have the xw series and the Rogue Squadron series. Both are special in their own way, but are quite different in terms of gameplay,,,,

KOTOR, is definitely UNIQUE in the pantheon of SW titles. Firstly it is an RPG, with story and characterisation being integral to the games success, as opposed to weapoms, ships and combat, which are the key factors of other games....

**someone above mentioned Galaxies for the Ps2. IIRC, this was scrapped. There are far too many bugs and tweaking that needs to be done by devs, and this is only really viable through the PC platform and use of patches etc....**

Really ... why not just the best SW RPG set in the post-XExar Kun era but way before the prequels ... made by Bioware ... for PC and XBox ... any other constraints? ;)

I'm done on Scoundrel / Consular, almost done with the Soldier portion of my Soldier / Guardian ... and I still stand by my statement that this is not only the best SW game ever, but the best non-movie SW thing ever.

*Votes yes*

I just got the game yesterday, and I must say that I was impressed. I first knew I wanted this game the day that I saw the trailer, and I've been waiting for it ever since. Well, as I said I got it yesterday. I was on my toes the entire installation, just to see if the game would get installed correctly. When it was installed I restarted my PC as the game said I should. Once that was done, it was time to try out the game. I went to see what kind of resolution and what level of details I wanted to run. I clicked on "recommended" and got the following:

800 x 600 Resolution

Medium details/Graphics

Now it was truly time to game. I got into the game and started my character. When the opening scene/movie was completely blown away. The graphics suprised me so much I couldnt breathe. Once I got started on the Endar Spire, and once I got used to the gameplay and the combat system the game just started flowing. I didnt have any problems running the game at all, and when I got down on Taris and started exploring the Upper City, I was once again blown away by the graphics. The details are amazing and I really mean amazing, even though I run the game in a bad resolution and medium graphics. I can only imagine what the game would look like if I had a better PC. I played for 4½ hours yesterday, only interrupted by dinner and the occasional crashes and error loading the save games.

Now I I'm in the military base, and going strong.

My character is a lvl 7 Scout, and yes its really hard not to lvl up. I should probably start saving skill points for when I become a Jedi :). I'm going light this time and Dark the next time.

So apart from the occasional crashes I get, I havent seen any game that even comes close to this one. Its by far the best game I've ever played, and the combat system is better than in any other games. Overall it satifies my current needs for computer gaming, and I dont see any reason to stop playing it in the nearest future.

Hope you all liked my little rewiev of the game :D.

Congratulations on getting the game, Clemme... If you need any tips, just message me on MSN. I've found the 'important thingie' Dantooine, Tatooine and Manaan, and I'm 23 hours into the game... I still have a lot of sidequests to complete too...:D

All in all, even after five minutes of playing, I was thinking: "This is the best Star Wars game ever!!!"

Seems like so far the standings are:

Yes-100%

No-0%

Now, before I have my genitals cut off, let me plead my case for voting no!

The very first game I bought myelf for my first computer was Jedi Knight. It was love at first sight. I played it day and night, studying the intricacies, disassembling every piece if the game I could and molding it to my own likings then after about two years of that, I started playing MP in it and realised I kicked ass and took names. :D So as you can see, JK has a very special place in my heart but other than JK, Kotor rocks my socks!

Oh wait......you're entitled to that oppinion right?

Hmm, well, I only spoke for myself none other ;).

And to STTCT, Rebel Assault kicked ass, so did the sequel. Completed both :D.

I still like KotOR better than those 2 :).

For me, Knights of the Old Republic truly is the best Star Wars game out there. Yes, for quick lightsaber action, there's Jedi Knight/Outcast/Academy. For flying, we have the X-Wing games... but quite honestly, Knights of the Old Republic simply manages to beat them all because of its Star Wars nature.

First of all, the scope of the game is pure epic. We are not merely fighting a lackey of the big bad Empire, we're dealing with the main bad guy. For once, we are not merely attacking a sideproduct of the enemy or doing something by the sidelines, we are actually doing something that will permanently stop the war against the evil Sith Empire(or take over that Empire, I wouldn't know, I've yet to finish it on the Dark Side). There's a revelation in the game that goes so much farther than 'my father is killed by bad Dark Jedi and I'm a Jedi too'... in fact, in my opinion, this revelation is on the same scale as 'I am your father', and might even go beyond it. Simply put, when compared to other EU games and even novels, KotOR has an incredibly broad perspective. To introduce a totally new cast in a new era hasn't been done in the Star Wars universe since the Tales of the Jedi comics.

Second, the gameplay is freakin' addicitive. I lost an entire weekend to this game, and this is not exagarrating(sp). When I first heard that we'd be spending 10 hours on Taris, I was afraid that the game would have a very slow and frustrating start(a bit like Jedi Outcast is to some). To my surprise, I was enjoying Taris immensively the first time I set foot on it(after the wonderful spectacle that is the tutorial level). I never ever was frustrated with the game. I always knew what my goals were, and I never had to look far for it. The bases which you had to infiltrate(or blast everything in sight) always were at the right size, in my opinion. Not too large, but not too small. The combat itself is also, to put it simple, fun. It has a strategic feeling to it, but it all looks so good. When I was going into the droid-filled tomb on Korriban, I had all three character equipped with ion weapons... well, as we started fighting through that large hall, it looked like an action movie with laser shots flying around, characters dodging, running forward to get a clearer shot. Customising the characters also really helped with how much fun I had. It simply felt good to finally have Master Valour after spending such a large time to update my Soldier/Jedi Consular.

And finally, this game really, really manages to get the Star Wars feeling right. I was amazed when I set down on Taris to see normal civilians walking around, Sith troopers patrolling, ships flying in the air, a droid flies by, a protocol droid waggles along... it felt like a sprawling city. Dantooine feels like a peaceful, tamed planet, perfect for a Jedi Academy. I often stopped to watch the local life in the distance or just to see a flock of birds pass by. Manaan was an intriguing neutral planet, especially with the tension between the Sith and the Republic. Tatooine felt like Tatooine, plain and simple. Kashyyyk was truly a sight to behold, and the shadowlands felt like the evil place it was often described. Plus, there were so many little touches and EU references that really made me thinks "This is set in a Star Wars universe".

Well, it are those little touches and the many characters whom I haven't even started to describe yet that has truly made Knights of the Old Republic THE best Star Wars game ever. Bioware has a done a marvelous job with the game, and all the time I had spent speculating and hyping this game haven't been for nothing... this game is worth all the hype and more. Game of the Year material, if you ask me.

I find many of the people on the JK/JA forums very responsible, mature, personable, intelligent and articulate. It isn't an age thing, either. But there are quite a few immature, mean-spirited, idiotic whiners and abusers. I don't know if there is a correlation with MP-oriented FPS games, but it seems that in forums for RTCW, MoH, SoF, etc there are many more of the 'bad eggs' than in places like this.

I like the fact that in places like here, Bioware's forums (for KotOR, NWN, BG2, etc), EchoNetwork, and so on, are full of almost exclusively nice and helpful people, so you don't have to wade through as much BS as with the JK/JA forums.

Funny thing is - I hit my only game bug during my first time though (it didn't happen this time, although the circumstances were nearly identical, so I call it a bug) in which one person in the party suggested that someone in particular should also be in the party when we were in a certain place ... even though the suggested person was standing right next to us. I wanted to have an option come up so I could say something about their perception skills ...
