txa1265
Hey all: I was listening to a remake of an 80's song and thinking about remakes. When are they better? When are they worse? When are they just different? Toss in some examples. I'll start: CSNY's 'Woodstock' remake is better than Joni Mitchell's original I can't decide if No Doubt's 'It's My Life' remake is better than the Talk Talk original (that was the impetus for the thread) Mike
StormHammer
Most of the modern 'remakes' I've heard are quite sad compared to originals, or versions in the 60's and 70's. No doubt remakes back then were considered poor reflections of even earlier versions. I've yet to hear any song that sounded better than it's original or older version, and a lot of the time they just come off sounding like 'Me too...me too'. *stabs the music industry with a hot knife*
Pie™
Your mean cover songs? Well, some good cover songs are; Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) Sinergy - The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) Metallica - Am I Evil? (Diamond Head) but they might not be better than the original... Some bad cover songs are: Therion - Children of the Damned (Iron Maiden) Metallica - Last Caress (The Misfits) Korn - One (Metallica) Limp Bizk**** - Sanitarium (Metallica) Avril Lavinge - Fuel (Metallica) the original songs are many, many times better... txa1265
Ok, cover songs than. (prepare for controversy) I like the remake of 'Walk this way' by Run DMC & Aerosmith better than the original. The cover of Pinball Wizard by Elton John is *not* better than the original Mike
BCanr2d2
Knockin' On Heaven's Door by Guns N' Roses - live at the Freddie Mercury concert kicks the Dylan version I agree with Aerosmith/Run DMC (Although it was Aerosmith's song to begin with) Off the top of my head, most covers are very ordinary. A lot of them are on songs that are so obscure, people have no idea it's a cover Worst cover ever: Madonna - American Pie
--ZeeMan--
i think the ataris did a good job covering "boys of summer" by henley :-) metallica did a decent job of covering "turn the page" (they couldn't replicate the saxaphone, which makes that song what it is) and then dj sammy has created several excellent covers of "boys of summer" and "moonlight shadown" - mike oldfield
txa1265
A few more: - Devo covering the Stones 'Satisfaction' ... very different, and cool - hard to compare versions - Britney Spears doing Satisfaction ... do I actually need to say it? Jimi Hendrix 'All along the watchtower' is better than Dylan's The Who doing 'Summertime Blues' is better than Eddie Cochran's ... and while we're at it, so was Blue Cheer's version. [edit] Oh, and speaking of the Who, the Limp Bizkit version of 'Behind Blue Eyes' ... blue, um, I mean blew ... Mike

narfblat
Can we count parodies? If so, I'd like to submit this: original: MacArthur Park (some guy whining about a cake getting ruined) parody by Weird Al: Jurassic Park (a song loosely based on the movie/book) When I first heard MacArthur Park, I thought it was another parody, but not as good
ET Warrior
Worst cover ever: American Pie by Madonna. She butchered that song, and should burn in hell for it. I actually like a lot of ska covers of songs from the 60's and 70's. I can't think of any at the moment, and they're not better than the originals, but they're really good. The Cheat
the two worst that come straight to my mind are britney spears "satisfaction" (if only she really knew what it was all about) and madonna "american pie" (just doesnt have the impact of the original or do it justice at all)

darthweaver
All the covers a band called HIM have done are better than the orignals. their version of chrissy isakes Wicked Game on their greatest loves songs album is the best cover ever. the covers of enjoy the silence by depeche mode, larger than life by the backstreet boys, rebel yell by billy idol rendezous with anus by (forgot name). they also covered neil diamond solitary man and some other stuff. all way way way better than origanls. Muse: feeling good is good as well and the darkness: street spirit rocks
