Metallus
...is hard. How are people keeping occupied between now and when Psychonauts comes out? Right now this is the only game I'm really looking forward to (for consoles anyway), so I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same position. There's only a couple months left until we finally get to see the excellent game Psychonauts. As is the case probably with some other community members, Psychonauts was a big reason for my wanting to get an Xbox, since early on it was an Xbox-exclusive title. However, I've now had tehbox for a couple years and change, and have a load of games for it. I just got through KOTOR 2 (after about 2 months) and Halo 2 (about 4 days of playing 1-2 levels a sitting; it's short), and I was hoping they'd last me until April ;(. So now, I think I'm going to go back and try beating every game Xbox game I own before Psychonauts is delivered to my house. I have a number of games that I just never really got around to, or shrugged off after a little while because I got into a different game, or completely suck arse. Of the games on my list o' shame, here are the games I will probably actually get to: Crimson Skies: I got this around the same time as I got Secret Weapons over Normandy, and I couldn't very easily switch back and forth between the different control systems, so it got ignored. Armed and Dangerous: Lots of people love this game, but to me it seems very unpolished and buggy. Got kind of tired of it after I couldn't figure out what to do on the level where you get the cool flying rocket pack parasail thing, although the item in and of itself was rad. Anyway, I just wrote a lot of stuff, and revealed that I'm not very much of a benefit to society in my free time. Hey, a good 15 minutes killed! So what are you all up to? Is anyone else playing un-bad games that are worth mentioning?
VampireNaomi
Talking about waiting, the release date is for the US, right? Any idea when the game will be released in Europe? That means even longer waiting for me. In the meantime I will occupy myself with wondering where to get enough RAM memory for this piece of junk to run the game properly, and I just might buy Black Mirror or the new Sherlock Holmes game to keep myself entertained. Remi
Anybody who hasn't played Beyond Good & Evil really should go and play that now. It seems very Psychonauts-y in many ways (excellent plot and story, great voice acting, tons of fun), and is just short enough that you'll probably finish it... well, probably way before Psychonauts is released. Thrik
The European release will come a bit later, mainly because of the localization involved with such a game.

I played through a fair chunk of it at a friend's house, and it seems like a likely purchase for me, but I should probably get a better ratio of beat:unbeat games on my shelf first. Huz
Recently I've been addicted to Outrun 2 all over again. Not very adventurey, I must admit, but it's just about all I play on the Xbox - that and the incredibly frustrating Bumout 3. As for other games, I've been gradually replaying Curse of Monkey Island with a view to moving on to Escape (it can't really be as bad as I remember... can it? Remi would say not, at least). I'll definitely try to play Grim Fandango again - it's long overdue - but the Broken Sword series (which has been sitting, unplayed, on my shelf for years) should probably take precedence. Oh, and I might play Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube for more than five minutes. It's both an action adventure and pretty good, so it could be a good warm-up game for PSYCHONAUTS! Oh, and in case anyone needs confirmation, I wholeheartedly recommend Beyond Good and Evil. Adventure games are dead, BG&E is the future, man. I really hope Psychonauts will confirm this! Prosky
It's totally worth the wait, don't worry bout that. Also, as far as Armed and Dangerous, I don't know if you've heard but Planet Moon who developed the game is working on Majesco's upcoming PSP game Infected. Definitely keep your eye on those guys. Bucky the Bear
In about a week, I'll be picking-up Phantom Dust for the Xbox. That should help ease the waiting pains. But still, the waiting is pretty hard. Tom Petty was right. Edit: I'm also going to wash my hands.
Metallus
There aren't nearly enough votes for "Beard." in that other thread. Perhaps I could attempt to grow an action beard in anticipation of April.

I'd rather get the "original" version than the translated, because localized versions tend to suck at some points. For instance in MI4 they even "translated" the graphics, that means they overpainted the 'beautiful' MI screenart with some stupid font. It was simply worse than UGLY. Not that I expect it in Psychonauts, but I really don't like the thought of ever seeing such thing again. And being a full time father I'll have to think up some tactics and strategy to gain some time to play the game AND NOT getting beaten up by the big girl because i only have the game in mind when the little girl is in bed. The best plan so far is to cut down sleeping times until i finished Psychonauts, 30 minutes per day should be more than enough.
Alien426
Originally posted by RayJones localized versions tend to suck I'm right there with you. If I can help it, I will always buy the original game, read the original book... I think the German voices in Grim Fandango sucked ass. I've only seen a trailer or a review video on a magazine CD, but that was enough. The German version of The Dig has the dubbing voice of Scully. *rraarrrgh* I think I'll make an exception. I've already got mine, its just a bit of stubble ala Indy, but perfect for sitting at my computer endlessly entering the minds of other people and picking up emotional baggage. I'd also wholeheartedly suggest Beyond Good and Evil as a decent game. May try Secret Weapons at some point (any good?), I've just bought KOTOR 2 (for no apparent reason) and Armed and Dangerous, so that should keep me busy for a while. I also have some assignments to do, but hell, that's not a game!
VampireNaomi
What do you guys exactly mean by localization? I have never heard the term before. If you are talking about dubbing or translating the subtitles, I don't have to worry. My country is so small that it would be a financial suicide to dub games that aren't directed to little children. Ray Jones
Localization as in "translated into another language so that people who are located somewhere else and who speak (only) that certain language can actually understand and thus play the game". VampireNaomi
Oh. But wouldn't they learn better English if they played their games un-localized?
Joshi
Maybe they don't want to learn english.

Alien426
Originally posted by VampireNaomi Oh. But wouldn't they learn better English if they played their games un-localized? Oh, you little angel. Yes, of course they'd learn another language and they would have to be pretty good at it if they want to be entertained. It would be a great incentive to learn a new language. That's one of the things I frequently rant about. 'Our' kids don't need to make an effort, because they can easily get most everything in their language (easier even than in the original one). If you ask me, countries in which children don't get everything stuffed up their asses will raise people who are much more likely to be better learners. They see the benefits in getting more knowledge. I often see Brits / Americans who put very little effort into their posts (*ahem*scummlocal*ahem*) while people from other countries try harder to make themselves as clear as they can. I better stop now or I may start babbling about PISA and stuff like that.

(*ahem*RayJones*ahem*) Yes, very true a lot more things nowadays are in english and it would definately be easier for m ore and more people to learn it, but it is still very possible to live without it, I have people coming to my university from overseas (think Vietnamese, or russian) who don't speak english very well and they are still able to survive. If they were still in their own country they'd be fine. But I digress (as I love to do), english versions of games (language wise and not east of the pond wise) are a hell of a lot better if the game was made that way. VampireNaomi
I hope I didn't sound ignorant in my earlier posts. Yes, it's perfectly possible to survive without English and there are careers in which other languages are more useful. I guess it depends more on where you live. I wouldn't blame a German person, just for example, of not being fluent in English because many things are dubbed there, and German itself is spoken by so many people that one doesn't necessarily have to study English in order to survive in central Europe. And in a way localization is good. Playing Grim Fandango in German would be quite a treat.
Ray Jones
Globalization is the way it goes, babey. If we ever leave this planet (I mean,.. we did, but.. you know..?) I simply cannot imagine some bunch of humans speaking in 30 languages. Wether english or not, one language it has to be. Also every translated game I played has lost something, mostly it's humor or the original intend of dialoques.
Bucky the Bear
Originally posted by Metallus There aren't nearly enough votes for "Beard." in that other thread. Perhaps I could attempt to grow an action beard in anticipation of April. Nice. We could adapt the old NHL playoff beard tradition, no shaving until we play our first game of Psychonauts. Of course, the people who can't grow beards, can just buy fake beards or better yet, you can hold small furry animals close your face and pet them; and when someone asks you what you're, doing you'll reply, "Why, I'm stroking my beard," and give them a funny look like their the crazy ones. Then again, I have trouble growing a quality beard of my own, it always start off nice with that designer stubble look, but as it gets longer it transforms into the pubes-glued-on-my-face look. So growing one is out for me, and if I buy a fake people will soon become suspicious and find out my glued-pubes secret, and small animals can be so hard to catch sometimes. That's it, the traditions off! Great, I started and killed a tradition in the same post. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted... a couple run-on sentences. Now I have to come up with something else to keep me busy until April. (although I still plan to try that animal beard thing, not for the tradition, more of a personal goal) Maybe I'll invent this "one language" that Ray Jones suggests we'll need. I've got it, we'll use only one word in place of people, places, and things - like the Marklar from South Park. And the word we'll use is...Psychonauts. Later, my psychonauts. I got my psychonauts caught in the psychonaut with psychonauts, and it really hurts, I should probably go the psychonaut and see a professional psychonaut. Have a good psychonaut. JofaGuht
For those who have been waiting since it was announced.....it feels so surreal, doesn't? The fact that it's just around corner? Though, over the years, I have become a tad skeptical. Yeah, awesome premise and Tim Schafer is behind it, but I keep getting hinted that it may be a little too cartoonish and funny, From somebody who didn't like DOTT very much, reading stuff like "humor will run rampant" kind of puts me off. I just hope it involves the subtle dark quality that Full Throttle and especially Grim Fandango had., and I'm not seeing many hints that it will, because a premise like Psychonauts NEEDS that quality. Prosky
First of all, AWESOME COOPER REFERENCE!!! And the game will have dark elements, it's Schafer for god's sake!. Just sit back and relax, it's on the way.
