I've been reading the 'meet-n-greet' threads (Getting to know each other, Photo Album, Explain your name, etc.) here lately and have noticed that there seems to be alot of members here that are / was in a band or at least have an interest in music. I know that Darth333 used to (may still) play piano, and discovered that our very own Boba Rhett indeed plays the guitar... Plus, many of you are in already established bands and are playing gigs to date. I myself used to be in band (for those who've seen my lately released pic ) and I've pretty much grown-up surrounded by music. My family, both my Mother's side and Father's side have always been involved in music, and needless to say a wide variety of music types and instruments have made their way into my hands. I play guitar (since I was 9yrs old) and have had 4 years of Spanish Classical training, but I also dabble in bass, percussion (trap set & latin), limited piano... and yes... the dulcimer... I can't play sports worth a crap, so I thought I might as well learn as much instruments as possible I've always preferred listening to 'fresh' music rather than the commercially pressed stuff we tend to get fed these days... though I am guilty of listening & owning my fair share as well... Another thing, do you have any 'demos' or samples you'd like to share? (No crtitiquing unless specified by the author's / poster's request... please) I'll go first... this was one of the albums (no not 'records') that we (our band) would sell or give out at our shows. We basically did shows around the local scene... and would do East Coast "tours" (basically traveling and scrounging for gigs), Battle of the Bands, etc.. Keep in mind, this was in 1993, let's just say the music (Metal) tastes were a bit more different than what it is today. Mine (ours) was more ... well.. to be honest I'm not sure.. "metal" "glam" (god forbid) heheh... nothing "Poo-Poo hardcore", but hopefully not as sissy as others in the same 'category' back in those days.... Qualtiy isn't the best as this was transferred from a tape that was partially "digested" but saved (yeah yeah.. 'tapes' what are those.. har har) Complete 11 track CD rip (mp3 format) (35.5mb). I know it's huge... but it uses less space on my server if I can zip them. I can zip them individually for even more public embarassment if necessary, but I don't forsee a great demand for this 45sec. Sample (561kb) of us goofing with an Intro track (never made it onto a release)... ** - critique & comments are welcome, this was many moons ago and my skin has 'toughened' since.. hehehe Gear (past & to date) An old Peavey Tracer electric with Kahler Spyder floating tremolo, Turquoise finish (still plays better than most of my others) Peavey Half-Stack. solid-state head with (4) 15" speakers cabinet Charvel (Jackson) electric with midnight purple finish, gutted the 'stock' and installed another Kahler Spyder tremolo Gibson Les Paul electric with cherry sunburst finish 12 string Ovation (I hated that guitar, swollen body and crappy fret action) 6 string Takamine, cherry finish, shallow body, acoustic / electric (my favorite in my collection) Alvarez acoustic, custom (gift from my Father) DigiTech multi-FX Processor / Pedal Board. Midi capable and over 150 pre-programmed and custom effects. 6 pedals + wah/volume switch. (Loved messing with that thing) So, with that... what's your story? Do you play an instrument? In a band? Myself, play lead in a punk/ghoul band. Bass in a metal/hard core group. Write some lyrics. No real tours/gigs for either, mostly just for fun & to blow off steam at the s*** status of todays "popular music" (if it can even be called that, the whole other people writting your songs, sampling, & lip synching s*** really gets to me.... but thats for another thread). I'm in the same boat as growing up around music, mostly encouraged by my mom. Introduced me to the Doors & it went from there. Playing guitar/bass for roughly 12 years, mess around on the drums when I get the chance. Actually, feel free to post your thoughts about it here. I was wanting to this to be a "free-for-all" as long as it relates to music. (all genres) And I'd have to agree. If you're going to be in the music business, at least write your own stuff I have mixed feelings on sampling. To a degree, things such as FX and stuff I can overlook (and I've used before) but ripping off someone else's tracks, be it a single riff... or the whole rhythm track is just wrong... Lip synching.. ugghh.. I don't go to a show and pay good money to hear someone's CD that I've already bought. That just steams me to no end. I want to hear all the "imperfections" and in today's music world, I wonder if the artist even knows that the fans don't care if it's not 'perfect'... stingerhs Posted April 17, 2005 Share Posted April 17, 2005 do vocals count?? i did both hard and soft vocals for a couple of months with a band. i even wrote a couple of songs, but the drummer and the lead guitarist quit. after that, things just fell apart. i'd post a sample, but i don't have access to the recordings. edit: and it was a Christain Hardcore band. Whether you've had the "pleasure" (and I use the term loosely... hehehe) of listening to my old band's tracks, the vocals were probably the least thing we 'liked'. Needless to say it was one of the many "musical differences" that caused the breakup. Vocals (the frontman) are just as important, if not the most important part of a 'gig' band IMO @Master Bedhead Hey, session work and studio gigs are probably the best to do in reality. I always preferred the studio environment opposed to the creepy dives we used to play in... though I wouldn't have given those up if I had it all to do over... hehehe... I still have my old gear: Fender Precision Bass, Peavey 18"+2x10" speaker cabinet (pretty big), and this old vacuum tube amp head with built-in analog delay (a la Pink Floyd's "One of These Days"), Shure microphone and stand. But these sit in my garage gathering dust. My acoustic Ovation Applause bass sits in my family room on a stand and I've been playing it with much greater frequency lately. I went with a solid state just to reduce feedback and "hum" when it was sitting next to our bassist's huge-ass stack that could blow you out of your shoes @The Hidden One Yes definitely, any instruments count... brass & woodwinds especially. My dad played trombone, so that rubbed off onto me- I play both jazz and classical trombone, never learned piano, tried tuba for a few years, and am trying to save enough money to buy a bass guitar- my friend is taking up acoustic guitar and is talking about starting a band, and so I would need to learn Bass. Plus when you bump into it when you're on stage, you get this sudden lightning-reverb sound that can make for a dramatic (or distracting) effect on the audience. I'm a guitar player though and don't get into much else unless it can help a guitar's sound I agree Tube Amps are HEAVY I personally have some Peavey Scorpion bass speakers in my stack and it gives my guitar a really "chunky monkey" sound. I idolized Nuno's style forever... I swear I listened to Extreme all throughout my "college years"... in fact, though our song "Vampire Woman" (track03), well sucks,... the solo I had done was inspired by Nuno's style... Blues Saraceno was another I listened to.. until he had a brain fart & joined "Poison" (WTF) ... Marty Friedman was damn good, til he joined up with Dave "I'm a hack" Mustaine (Megadeth). You can def. tell that Nuno was a BIG influence on me I have to try a bit sometimes not to sound "too" much like him...lol I'd sit there for hours and listen to song after song till I learned em' all. Hardest one. He-Man Woman Hater, Flight of The Wounded Bumblebee. He's def. my biggest influence. And ooh god can't believe I'm gonna admit this but Poison was a really big one for me back with CC DeVille on the axe. You might ask why??? Name one other band that if you know 5 chords and can solo over a Pent. I also took band and couldnt READ THE NOTES. Laugh all you want, I think its funny. I learned to play by ear and that sorta gave me an artificial perfect pitch. I can usually get most tunes down in about 10 minutes solo included. It would be nice to do but I made it through 2 years guitarist major without it. I'd just ask the professor to play it for me to see his "take" on it. Aristotélēsticus Posted April 22, 2005 Share Posted April 22, 2005 I was a vocal in a band called "NOON" ,well it's not the same English word, it's an Arabic name of a letter in Arabic language which happen to be the like of "N" in English, then we changed it's name to "SEVENTH LORE" , and now we don’t know which name to chose (what do you think is better?). Anyway, first: we were a Gothic Metal band; we didn’t have our own songs so we did songs of the likes of Tristania (one of my special bands), Sirenia, Epica, Nightwish, and Anathema, (especially a dying wish). Then we've changed to be an Oriental metal band, we combines oriental elements and Arabic tradition and folk music with slow Doomdeath metal, we have a vocals(me),2 Guitarists,a Bassist,a Drumer, keyboards, and sometimes we were added by an Arabic instruments(I do the Arabic harp). We are now working on our first album, and now I'm working with my friend (the guitarist) on the lyrics and we almost done, and this is our songs title and its objects: 1. "Of Mortals…" :its about humans and their wars through decades to satisfy their lust for power while they are destroying the life on earth, and how all of this will be perish for we all must fall at the end. 2."A Throne Within": the Death is speaking with a great king telling him that all the victories and glories he had in his life wont give him eternity, and how he will fall in his throne like all the men he once killed. 3."The Old Man and the Sea" : this song is special to me, I wrote this and its describes me, it’s words from an old man to his friend the sea. 4. "Crimson Tears" :the tears of a man who discovered that there is no love in this world, he describes how he still longed for his beloved one even after he was cheated by her. 5. "A Neverwinternight" :(like the name of the game), a requiem of a man and his lost angel. 6."The death of Gilgamesh" : it describes it self (taken form the original epic of Gilgamesh whom I am a big fan of) 7. " Of love, bird and man" a very long song that tells the story of a man and his friend "the bird" and how strong is their friendship, then the man fall in love with a woman and wanted to marry her but she tells him that if he bring her a crimson rose she will agree to do so, thus the poor man has no money to buy her one so the bird tells him to slay him and let a white rose drink his blood thus a crimson one it will be, but after he do so he discover that he was too late because of a rich man who bought the woman a crimson rose, thus he left alone mourning his friend who sacrifice him self for nothing… 8. "The eclipse of a lost soul" : an Arabic lyrics (by a male vocals) and English (by a female), a great lyrics but sad that we don’t have female vocals to perform it, we used to have one but she had left us to join another band, do you know of one? If you know just let me know. 9."The Unification" : instrumental, with some Christian, Islamic, and Jewish prayers telling that we are all the same and must leave in peace. THE MANDALORE Posted April 23, 2005 Share Posted April 23, 2005 Well to start off, I play several instruments. I play: Flute, Piccolo, Piano, Violin, Trumpet, and Clarinet. I am in my school's Concert Band (I recently persuaded my music teacher into letting us play the Star Wars theme song and the Duel of the Fates at our next concert ). I also participate in the Marching Band and I am thinking of joining the Jazz Ensemble next year. Music is an important part of my daily life.
