It's three episodes shown together, from 7pm to 1am! It's the Dune produced by the Sci-Fi Channel, and it has William Hurt in it. Goddamn, I'm so stoked for this. Seriously, the book can't really be summarized too well without destroying the backstory, which is essential in the main story. Knowing that, basically Dune is where an intergalatic House, Atriedies, takes over a spice planet from a rival House, gets entrapped by the rival house, and the young messiah-heir of the Atriedies tries to reclaim his legacy with his prophetic powahs. I remember when Dune (the movie directed by David Lynch) came out in 1980 something or rather. I remember seeing trailers for it, and thinking it would be the next best thing to Star Wars. When I watched it, I was so confused that I seriously thought I was retarded. A few years later, it came to TV, THIS time with a narrator, and I thought that MAYBE I would understand it this time. I didn't. In fact I was even more frustated this time. Then for years I decided that Dune was the worst thing I had ever seen, and gave up on it. In fact I was so frustrated with that movie, I didn't even FEEL like reading the books. About this time last year, I got a wild whim, and decided to check out the made-for-sci-fi channel remake, staring William Hurt. I REALLY loved it. In fact it was so entertaining, that I literally watched the ENTIRE miniseries in one sitting. It was paced nicely, not hard to follow, had some impressive special fx, but not saturated by them, and had some decent acting. I didn't see Children Of Dune yet, but I PLAN too. I actually want to own both of them. They really did a good job with it this time, and I actually WANT to read the books now. Dune is the first sci-fi thing in years since Star Wars, that has REALLY caught my attention. Yeah, i'll be checking this one out as well. Guess I better hurry up and see Children Of Dune before that happens. Special thanks to General Aggamenon (AKA Dath Maximus for convincing me that Dune was cool after all. He was right!) I actually, er, 'borrowed' it solely because I wanted to draw a fictional character of my friend's, and she said a random extra in that miniseries was the perfect model for him. I didn't actually intend to watch it, just fast-forward to battle scenes. toms Posted April 11, 2005 Share Posted April 11, 2005 The first series is good, but a bit low budget. Don't go in expecting movie level special effects or anything and it should be pretty enjoyable. Its a little "stagey" though. I know that the movie is DEEPLY FLAWED but it did have some great imagery in it... and even though it wasn't that great, and i haven't seen it for years, I did keep comparing the miniseries to the movie in my head. It didn't quite live up to the movie in a few of the big scenes... but the dialogue and plot was a lot better. I did try and read the Dune sequels as a kid, but found them pretty impenetrable. Maybe this (and the fact there wasn't a children of dune movie to influence me) is why I actually enjoyed the second miniseries more. The sfx had improved, it was a bit less stagey and the younger actors had improved as well. Are you getting the uncut version of the first miniseries? Spider AL Posted April 11, 2005 Share Posted April 11, 2005 Dune the book is a collossus among sci-fi epics. It is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. The eliteness of it shines like a beacon of loveliness, dazzling those that would dare profane the ground on which it walks, with their lowly presence. The Lynch film sucks, of course. But the "extended" versions make it MUCH more watchable, despite inevitable continuity errors. I prefer to think of the Lynch film as the definitive ILLUSTRATION of the novel, rather than an actual adaptation. As for the miniseries, it was okay. But the fight scenes were utterly dismal, many of the actors (especially P.H.Moriarty and that awful wench who played Jessica so awfully) were utterly devoid of any talent or charisma whatsoever. As an adaptation, yes the miniseries was better. But more watchable than the uncut versions of Lynch's Dune? Don't think so. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

toms Posted April 12, 2005 Share Posted April 12, 2005 Yeah, the guy who played Gurney Hallek was possibly the worst actor i've ever seen. And the random collection of accents was a bit odd. I also thought william hurt and susan sarandon weren't very good considering they were the two biggest actors in the miniseries(s). The dune movie did create some great (definitive?) images... (shields, ornithopers, worms, harvesters, baron harkonen, sardakur, sting as feyyd, etc... ) even if the plot and story was a mess. Patrick stewart was great as well! They even used a lot of the designs in the dune pc games. Thats why the bits in the first miniseries that DIDN'T match or live up to the visuals of the films were dissapointing. And some of the costumes were rather daft. The "dreaded" sardakur did look quite silly. That said, i thought the younger actors did quite well, and some of the designs in the miniseries (navigator, space ships, still suits) were better than the movie. But the budget did hut it for some of the "epic" battles. The second ones is better because (a) it doesn't have a film to live up to/compare with. (b) the younger actors get more chance and have improved. © the graphics and budget have improved and (d) they have toned down a few of the most OTT costumes.
