Acrylic
Hey there. I've come to a point in my life where religions haven't been making much sense to me. And I've tried to come up with my own beliefs that give me comfort, but that's not working all too well either. So, in essence, I'm looking more into the Catholic religion (Which is what I was brought up as), religious theories and other religions. Becuase, I'm interested in learning about them, and then finally choosing one that makes the most sense to me. So, if anyone is of a religion other than Christianity, or has information that could help me out in learning about other religions, please post here. Thanks, Acrylic
Lady Jedi
I won't be any help in a religious discussion, as it's very private to me, but I will make note here that this is not the thread to bash other religions or anyone's choice of belief; we have the Senate Chambers for that. Acrylic here is just trying to get some facts (or so it seems), so that he can come to an educated decision. Any posts that are not on topic, or that rudely come against someone else because of what they believe, will be DELETED. Thank you all. You may commence freindly discussion. Kurgan
If you're interested in the Catholic faith, feel free to email me (kurganx@comcast.net) and I'll be happy to provide you with some resources or answers to your questions. I'm currently studying theology (grad school, 1st year, 2nd semester), so I can recommend some books or ask some theologians if I don't know the answer. Since I got my degree in undergrad with basically a survey of religions (African, Native American, Indian, Islam, Judaism, Witchcraft/Feminist, Buddhism, etc.), I can give you some basic info on those too, but not as in depth as Christianity/Bible. TiE23
I myself haven't really seen the reason for religion, at least in my opinion. I don't know about you but I could deal not having a religion to belong to. But hanging with your family on Christmas and stuff is still fun, even if you rarely go to church on Sundays (like me). You should just stay cool and recount the things you have and reflect on that. I'm not an expert but joining a religion is probably tough to do, and it can take a lot of your time unless you are really into it. Besides, if you are having problems, you can go to your church and talk to someone? Switching religions isn't really going to solve that much, it could be fun but I don't know it would solve that much. So like, think it over and just watch some TV or something. No need to get excited.
Kurgan
I come across a lot of "seeking" people at my school actually. There's been a lot of apostasies and conversions too. Converting from one religion to another is a big deal for a lot of people. Also joining a religion when you have none is also a major step. Some people blend religions in their own life (this happens a lot in India, Japan, and parts of sub-saharan Africa for example), and apparently it works for them. Some people seem to get by just fine without religion, though I've noticed a lot of people (at least the ones I meet) feel like they are "missing" something spiritual or mystical and so end up adopting something to fill that "gap" in their life. So I guess if you're serious it will be a journey, so I wish you the best. Again, I'm always available...
Pie™
Clicky. More of a philosophy than religion, but an interesting alternative none the less, absolutely worth the read if you're interested in alternatives.
PR-0927
I'm Hindu, but I'm not religious. I have found that religion is JUST A THEORY. It tends to cause wars and conflict as well. People shouldn't be blowing anyone's guts out because they do not believe in the same THEORY. I really despise fanatical religious people who think that all people of other religions will go to hell or are not worthy of life. - Majin Revan

Kurgan
Were you going to bash all religion or something? He said he was looking for a religion, though I suppose you could recommend atheism too if you wanted. Then again when some people use the word "religion" they mean only organized religion. Some people prefer to just have their own private beliefs that aren't "connected" with any community or organization. I'd argue that's still religion, just not as organized. And even the folks who claim not to be organized typically gather together in groups with similar beliefs. Explain that!
Alkonium
This is why I prefer not to talk about religion. Too touchy. If you want my honest opinion, I don't know any religion all too well, but if you can't find the right one, create a religion, or become an athiest. BongoBob
Although I hate to say it, check out Jehovahs Witnesses, as it makes the most sense out of any religion IMO. I'm not very religious, but I can give you some info if you want.

Hermie
This is a religion that I endorse fully, and feel that it makes the most sense out of everything. Acrylic
Wow, I didn't think I'd get that much response in such a short amount of time. See, the thing is, I'm Catholic right now, but I don't know anything about that religion, so, I think I'll email Kurgan in a bit. And I personally wouldn't be able to live life without religion. To me, it's comfort, it's something to look up to, something to guide you. I wouldn't be able to get into a "religion" without something as a higher being, that you know, created all. Because, that's what I believe, and I want to find something that goes along with that belief. Pie, I read your link, and they way I interpreted it, whoever wrote it has some issues with churches, and Judeo-Christian beliefs and whatnot. But I did read it, and thank you for your input. BongoBob, give me any info you can. And Majin, we studied Hinduism in my International Studies class just a little while ago, and since we didn't go TOO in depth about it, I'd really appreciate if you could tell me a little bit more about it, since I'm open to all suggestions and everything. And, thanks everyone for keeping this peaceful (so far), lets hope it stays this way, hmm?

toms
Most of europe is fairly agnostic/lapsed these days.. spain is actually probably one of the more religious countrys in "old europe" (some of the new countries joining are fairly religious still). imho... I find it a little odd that people go out almost shopping for a new religion, like you would do for anything else in life. About the only thing I agree with a lot of evangelical christians about is that surely a religion should involve some form of personal experience... "talking to god" if you will... Its never happened to me.. but I just can't see that I would ever join a religion simply because I "liked" what it said.. I'd have to have some sort of spiritual experience that made me actually believe. Believe because I believe... not because I try to convince myself to.. or because others tell me to. Anyway, whatever religon does suit you, all I believe is that as long as you retain a small amount of healthy scepticism religion can't do too much harm. Its only when people start accepting what they are told blindly that extremism and other problems start. I think that a lot of the appeal of islam is that it retains a lot of the certainty that religions like christianity have recently started to lack as they try to adapt to the modern world. Certainty can be very comforting.. but I'm not sure it is always healthy.
BongoBob
If you would like to learn about Jehovahs Witnesses, then I'm sure there are some in your area that could help you out alot more than I can, as I really am not a witness, I just feel it makes the most sense. But, if you want, read some of the articles at here, since they are taken from the watchtower or awake magazines directly, and aren't just random facts, but actual topics using the bible. Hope that helps you out acyrlic, and I really am surprised that this hasn't turned into something ugly

IG-64
You could try reading up on protestantism. I recommend watching "Love worth finding" with adrien rogers on sundays, he's not as crazy as most pastors you see on tbn or something, and he makes sense. ZBomber
You can also learn a lot about religion by going to a local church once in awhile. Agreed, if you are Catholic and you want to learn more about it, I'd try church a little bit. I don't really have a religion, I used to be Catholic but I pretty much gave that up. So, don't really have any advice.
Acrylic
You can also learn a lot about religion by going to a local church once in awhile. I could...but I really don't want to wake up at 7 to go to a 9AM mass, ya know, and 12 is outta the question, because that seems kinda late.
