How to clean a keyboard...

As long as the circuitry is intact, you should be able to disassemble it and clean the components in question individually (preferably with some de-ionized water or other non-conductive substance). Don't cut the green wire that looks like it's just attached to a piece of metal and will get in your way when removing the back though. It's the ground and if you remove it you could short the keys/lights on your keyboard. I learned that the hard way when I failed at wiring my keyboard so it would be wireless.

lolz. I know I'll sound like your parents when I say this - but you shouldnt have drinks so close to the keyboard. Drinks arent allowed into the room where the compys are in our house, and if absolutely necessary are put on a separate table, bookcase :D

My current keybaord is a bluetooth 2.0 thingy that cost me a bit, so I need to be a bit precautious !! :p

I don't think it can be 'repaired'. Something similar happened to mine (ginger ale), and the keys went all screwy. The 's' typed an 'r', shift was the spacebar... it was insane.

I had the same thing happen to mine, so I just bought a nicer keyboard. But yeah, I'm not sure if their is alot that you can do to fix it.

I agree. Attempting to clean a keyboard is like attempting to shave a Wookiee. Might I suggest a ValGear keyboard.

I can't afford dirt right now. I'm saving for a joystick for X-Wing Alliance.

As for cleaning, I did what jmac said to do, and it's currently drying out. I moved my keyboard from my other comp over to this one.

Thanks for your help guys.

Actually, I paid $10 CDN for a ValGear keyboard two years ago, and it still works perfectly. If you do decide to get a cheap keyboard, I recommend it.

Jesus!! 10 CDN (Which I hope means Canadian) is like 5 bucks here in the US!! Wow.

Ok, I might look into it. Is it wireless?

I'm an odd one because my family prefers ergonomic keyboards. Anyways, my brother and I have managed spill various things in various keyboards at various points in time, and only once did we not manage to fix the problem with a good cleaning.

Take the thing apart, use q-tips and rubbing alchohol, preferably one of the higher concentrations, something 70%+. Be careful in taking it apart, use your head, keep track of the parts and of all the little screws. Carefully find all the sticky bit and clean them and possibly remove whatever stuff is inside and clean at all the seperate levels of wiring. (Taken three or so keyboards apart, they all have looked pretty much the same inside) You'll need patience and a free hour or two, depending how many times you have to take it apart, but if you've got a good keyboard and are cheap, it's a good way to go.

Oh, and the one keyboard we failed to fix right away with this procedure (My brother spilled a latte in it) I managed to put aright a year later when I needed it for the comp I had put together. So if at first it won't work, just be more thorough in the surfaces you clean, and it could easily come out fine. (And don't ask me how we failed to throw the thing out for a year. Just don't ask.)

Just my $.02.

More like 7.

Close enough.

I just got back from Best Buy. They had the keyboard there for $9.99 USD, but I also found a nice wireless one for $19.99 USD. I have about $30.00 USD, but I need some for my new Joystick that I'm getting for X-Wing Alliance.

Tough decisions...

pop out the keys and dip it in water :D

seriously though, my keyboard has got unlimited amounts of liquid (presently solid) and solid(permanently solid) crap under the keys, courtesy of my [heavy sarcasm]dear, dear sister[/heavy sarcasm]. it still works fine though. id say you'd better get a reliable one. like Logitech.

well, the only time i've managed to spill anything on my keyboard was a freak accident at a LAN party involving several very rowdy guys fighting over who was next in line for the Halo competition on the Xbox, a half-full can of Red Bull, and my computer sitting almost 15 ft away.

i'll spare you the details, but the aftermath had me freaking out since the stuff not only got on my keyboard, but it also got on the back of my compy where all the wires are. i'm just glad that the stuff didn't hit the intake fan on my case, or it probably would've turned out a lot worse.
