I've been converted...

Because of a virus I got from scanning a file with AVG (I don't know either), I've been forced to convert from IE to Firefox.

Unfortunately, I can't use MSN Messenger, either. I got rid of the virus, I have no Spyware, but I can't open MSN Messenger. I try logging in, and it closes the window and cancels the log in.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but no luck. Right now I'm stuck using Windows Messenger. And it sucks. It's like... Messenger 2.0. I need help!

For your MSN problem, you can use GAIM, it has most all of the IM protocols in it, including MSN. So like if you have AIM and MSN like I do then instead of having 2 different programs running you only have GAIM.

But I'm glad you switched to firefox. Anyone who still uses IE should be purged in the fires of hell.

damn....is that all.... I thought you were coming out of the closet :)

I'd gotten dressed up in leather pants with no buttcheeks and taken out my trusty rainbow flag

wait..... did you say AVG..... HAHAHAHAHA !

try http://www.avast.com for some good cheapskate free antivirus software, it's even skinnable !

What the key question is though, "where did you get that virus"... that is more important to consider than anything else. Sure FF is cool, but its not an iron shield against all net nasties...

but seriously, if you - let me put it this way "engage in dangerous activity" on the net, no free antivirus program or browser on default settings will help you.

Having your internet security settings(on ie or ff) on "Very High" may prevent you from getting into that trouble from the start because that page(and many others) or online process wont load properly .... lolz.

With your windows messenger problem, sure you can use DMs suggestion but you shouldnt leave an evidently corrupted windows resident proggie floating around on your system.

Go to Settings>Add/Remove Programs>Add Remove Windows Components Tab(on side) and uncheck "Windows Messenger" to get rid of it alltogether.(while your there get rid of "Msn Explorer and Internet Explorer" - for proof that Windows DOESNT get rid of IE EVER....) :p

Then you can continue to use GAIM or MSN 7.5(which I like) or whatever the hell you want :p

I also recommend you run a registry cleanup utility ontop of everything else(spyware/adware/AV scan).

I already uninstalled Messenger, Astro ;)

I don't need any new anti-virus stuff. I already have three active anti-virus programs in addition to AVG. I just used AVG to scan that one file. AVG has been corrupted, I think, too - it won't find any viruses, but the others will.

I also have two anti-spyware pograms - Spybot and Adaware.

There is something else, actually. After the virus, I had a new program I never had before. It's called SpySherrif. I quarantined it until I know what it is. Is it spyware, or anti-spyware?

lolz.... Spysheriff is adware

This is a perfect example of why a *registry cleaner" is very important. You may indeed find and get rid of the adware proggie that is spysheriff, but removing its registry keys is a different story...

see the linky on how to do it manually -

while your at it - get yourself a registry cleaner, run an scan and see what you find. An OK free one is TweakNow Registry Cleaner, though Registry Mechanic is the best one Ive ever come across - its not free unfortunately... It seems the only ones with a true "deep scan" aren't free.

I wouldnt bother with 3 separate AV programs. You just need one. The reason they didnt help in this situation is that they are unable to get rid of this type of problem directly, because of the registry changes. This needs to be done manually or a good reg cleaner will do it for you :)

Get rid of AVG for starters. Im not sure what else you are running but I can really recommend http://www.avast.com I use it on my older computer and it works a treat.

but seriously doc, what type of sites do you go to.... you dont get those nasties from innocent places like this !

I really need help here. My firewall keeps dropping, and I can't do a thing to stop it. I log on to the PC, the firewall is up. Then it collapses, and I can't get it open again. I've tried activating it, but it gives me this:

We're sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialoge tab, select On (Recommended), and then click OK.

The problem is: THERE'S NO WINDOWS FIREWALL OPTION IN THE CONTROL PANEL!!! All there I get is these:

Appearance and Themes

Network and Internet Connections

Add or Remove Programs

Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices

Performance and Maintenance

Printers and Other Hardware

User Accounts

Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options

Accessibility Options

Security Center

The only one of these that has anything to do with the Firewall is the Security Center, which is the thing that told me to go to the Control Panel in the first place! WTF?!?!?!?

Did you not... read what I just said, cutmeister? The Security Centre tells me to go to the Control Panel. The Control Panel's only connnection to the Firewall is through the Security Centre. Each one directs me to the other. I can't access the Firewall settings through the Sercurity Centre - it says there's an unkown problem. In fact, it says exacttly this:

We're sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialoge tab, select On (Recommended), and then click OK.

I go to the Control Panel, but there's nothing there that helps at all.

Again, I say: WTF?!?!?!?

Alright people, I'm going to lay it out for you plain and simple here.... you don't seem to understand:

The. Security. Centre. Won't. Let. Me. Access. The. Firewall. Settings. Period. At all. When I try, it gives me this message:

Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.

When I click on recommendations, it gives me a option to turn on the Firewall. I click it, and I get the other error, directing me back to the Control Panel.

Yeah, I read what you wrote in post #12... except for the very last line. :-S I bet you really feel like doing :hit4: to me right about now, eh? While I didn't intentionally miss reading the last line of your post perhaps you understand now what it's like when the shoe is on the other foot...

Sounds like you're in some kind of circuitous logic loop. As the error is not giving you any real information to work off of I don't know what else to recommend. While you may not like Samnmax221's suggestion of reformatting your hard drive and installing your OS from scratch, if you haven't done this within the past year then I would second his suggestion. I've gotten into the habit of reformatting and reinstalling on my two computer systems on an annual basis. Too much junk left in the registry from programs that don't properly uninstall and other general garbage that seems to make my computer do quirky things. A format and fresh install gets me back to a clean slate and smooth running.
