Wii Secrets Revealed!

(Ripped from another forum)

The popular (and VERY reliable) Electronic Gaming Monthly did a cover story on all things Wii, particularly Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii functionality. The magazine was sent out early to Sweden and the news is all over if you know where to look.

The following things have been revealed:

Wii=$250

nes games=$1-2$

snes games=$5

n64 games=$10

Mario Wii=Fall 2006

Super Smash Brothers Wii=Fall 2006

Metroid Prime 3=2007

Twilight Princess=Will contain several Wii benefits, it's still a GCN game though, including better graphics, widescreen, and obviously, Wii remote functionality.

MEGATONS!:

-The Wii remote will have a speaker built in as well as a microphone, the quality of said speaker hasn't been discussed but one can only hope it's good! Imagine playing Castlevania and doing a whipping motion with the remote, hearing the whip CRACK in your hand and the force feedback act appropriately as well. Or a FPS, hearing the BANG of the gun in your hand and the force feedback knocking your hand backwards(to an extent of course). Or better yet, playing a Star Wars game and hearing the light sabre humming in your hand and making that classis WOOSH sound as you move it about. This is still early news and is not confirmed by Nintendo, but the likely hood of EGM lying or being wrong is about .0001%

-The Wii will ALWAYS be online, even when off...apparently...the function of this has not yet been revealed, although it is intriguing.

-The Wii can wirelessly send information to the remote which has a small amount of RAM, most likely for storing sound effects, but perhaps this feature could be expanded upon. Maybe you want to play Super Mario Kart (snes) with your pal at his house, but he's a cheap ass and hasn't paid the $5 for it, maybe your Wii could send the game file to your remote, all you need to do is bring your remote to his house, it wirelessly sends the info to his console and VOILA!

-None of these is said to be the famed MEGATON that Nintendo's been keeping for so long, but I'd be content with the whole speaker in the controller business, as long as its of a good quality.

Very interesting...

I can finally pick up Blast Corps! \o/

I want the lightgun for duck hunt though... it's just... nostalgia...

Mikey demands updated Duck Hunt for Wii, with a lightgun shell!

All this stuff sounds cool, I will be enjoying Nintendo's revealing of Wii tomorrow. :D

oh hell yeah, this is awesome, ur controller making the gunshot noise as u shoot... seriously it doesnt get better than that.

I read somewhere that ..

Time Magazine has learned that the Wii controller will be used to swing Link's sword and aim his bow in Twilight Princess. It will also play an integral part in many of the mini games, such as casting in the fishing mini game.

Cool. Like those ideas. Not convinced about the pricing of the downloadable content.

I'd go for:

NES games = Free / Free with codes in Revolution games.

SNES games = $1 to $2

N64 games = $5 to $10

Wonder if they will have a points/loyalty system like xbox live or if each download will be a micropayment?

Wonder if downloadable Dreamcast games would be possible? Or even downloadable GCN games split into "episodes".

Wonder if they will keep it games only or have downloadable media too... sonds like Xbox live will soon allow downloadable retro games plus videos, plus tv episodes, plus music and other content.

Still, the remote is sounding cooler and cooler... if it works... ;)

Impressive, although I still say that granddaddy of videogames is going senile. How exactly could this always be online? Are they going to require that all consumers have a broadband internet or they either can't use their phone or play it at all? PC FOREVER!

Yeah, I wasn't really expecting to have to pay for the downloadable games besides maybe the n64 games. Kinda disappointing.

That's the only function I want more info on. Just because it's very confusing.

And people. Please. Stop coming into OBVIOUS console threads and saying "OMGWTF PC 4EVAR!!11!1!1lololololroflcakes!1nintendosuxsonysuxmicrosucksucks!!1" It's getting old.

Watching the nintendo conference now on 1up.. some cool games.. the red steel demo looked fun, though the guy looked a bit tired at the end... ;)

No big MEGATON announcement yet though... unless i've missed it..

[edit]wiiConnect24.. standby mode.. same power as miniature lightbulb.. push new vehicle or weapon down to you overnight... people visit your animal crossing village and leave message while you are off... patches overnight... system that is new everyday.. plus instant startup so new gamers don't ahve to deal with load times.

[edit2] that 4 player tennis game looks frikkin awesome... i am SO getting one of these!!!

no big announcement though :( shame i missed the Twilight Princess stuff.. :(

NO PRICING OR AVAILABILITY ANNOUNCED (Q4 2006).

The game demos looked pretty sweet, as the speaker inside the remote for sound depth (was demonstrated in twilight princess, shooting arrow -> sound would bounce to screen sorta)

NO PRICING OR AVAILABILITY ANNOUNCED (Q4 2006).

Word is that the PS3 is SO EXPENSIVE that nintendo has put its announcement of a $250 price on hold while they decide if they want to raise the price. Gee thanks sony... :(

Graphics looked good, but not great. Xbox + 10% or so, but seemed to run at a faster framerate.

About half the games that i saw looked awesome (WiiSports, Mario, Metroid, Red Steel) and some of the others looked kinda meh (tony hawk downhill, excitetruck, big hammer game).

The controller seemed to work really well.. i gotta say i had doubts it could work as advertised... but that 4 player tennis game (plus the red steel demo) seemed to show it worked really easily and great. (I assume that kid who won the competition hadn't touched a wiimote before and he seemed to pick it up in no time).

I actually bought Dance Dance Revolution and a dance mat for xbox simply because i wanted a game that would be fun AND exercise... but it looks like the Revolution will be all that and much more.

I gotta say, if the $250 price is true then this might be the first console i have ever bought on release day... :D

I don't like how people say "like Xbox" graphics since the GCN stood right next to the Xbox in terms of graphics.

As for the pricing, I think they delayed the pricing announcement more because of the Xbox360 than the PS3. Plus I reckon that the price will end up being 199USD.

Its kind of hard to tell from the clips shown in the webcast.. what with them being compressed and small, and also with nintendo's fondness for simple graphics that don't tend to demonstrate the power of the console (such as the tennis game).

Nothing stuck me as hugely amazing or next-gen graphics-wise... excitetruck in particular looked like an early xbox game. A lot of them looked like a blast to play and control though.

[edit] in their Metroid 3 hands-on 1up even say

It's too bad Prime 3 doesn't look very next-generation (we'd have to put this side-by-side with the old GameCube Prime titles to be able to tell any real difference, graphically), but it certainly has a next-generation feel with the new control system.

hope i'm not spamming this thread :D

An Opera press release announces that a custom version of their web browser will be shipped with every Wii:

Opera Software, a world leader in Web browser technology, today announced that Nintendo's much anticipated new generation game console, Wii, will use the Opera browser.

Users of the Wii console will browse the Internet using their consoles. Navigating via the innovative new Wii Remote controller, users can visit Web sites in between gaming sessions.

Cool!! Nintendo is really going for this team up with opera aren''t they? I thought the DS idea was good.. but this will rock.

(though it is a little weird that nintendo - who limit their online gaming to protect the kids - are the first to let their console break out of the walled garden that is Xboxlive/SonyConnect... what about the bad pictures??

How much mem/cache does the Wii have? Cos a web browser opens the possibility of internet TV/video/music viewing plus instant messaging etc...

plus:

The next-generation console Wii is garnering much attention with its groundbreaking new controller. The new Resident Evil game for the console will combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere with the revolutionary control system of the Wii.

WIll rock if its up to recent gamecube RE developments...

I gotta say though I was a little disappointed by the RANGE of games shown at the Wii (there - i said it *spits*) Conference. Many of those they showed looked great.. but where were the RPGs? Where were any other FPS's? In particular, where were any RTS games?

Hopefully there will be a few more games on the showfloor we'll hear about soon...

also, for anyone wanting to see the controller in action in that cool tennis game.. i think this page has the vid:

and this page has a pic of the "regular" Wii controller for boring people who are stuck in their ways and want to be fat:

cool.. so i could probably view flickr, vimeo or youtube direct from my armchair... waving the wiimote around like a fool... er i mean like tom cruise in minority report :D

And with some SD cards i could maybe even watch bigger video downloads.. assuming the don't cripple the opera implementation.
