Asteroid to hit in 2036? It's possible.

We just need to send some triangular little ships out there to start shooting it into tiny pieces (and blasting the mysterious UFO that appears every so often for extra points).

Seriously though, we got a reprieve... great. Hopefully we can come up with a good solution before it's too late. Tsunami, anyone? :p

Don't worry, SG-1 will save us using a stolen Goa'uld Ha'tak a Naquda enhanced warhead and some duct tape. Obviously the Asgard can't help due to the treaty with the Goa'uld being made void if they do...

Dude your so behind on your SG-1 lol.

But they'd have to be REALLY small pieces. Or else you'd have flaming balls of fire reigning down on earth.....

...Actually, that'd be effing sweet.

Except for the dying part.

At least you can brag about that in Heaven than brag about how you died by some boring death.

an asteroid the size of texas has been reported to hit in 2012 and 2018... 2012 is the cycle of the mayan calender... but I think it would be MUCH MUCH worse if one hit the moon cuz that would complete frak the gravitational pull and orbit up to the point that the earth destroys itself.

My sisters and I used to play that on Atari.

Let's see--in 2012, I'll be 29. Again. Same for 2036. ;)

At least, that's what scientists think. In April of 2029, they thought, there was a good chance that an asteroid the size of the Rose Bowl would collide with Earth. In fact, the date was April 13, or Friday the 13th, of that year. However, they now know it's going to miss, but will go in between the Earth and Moon. Talk about "near miss." It will, according to Nova, be closer to Earth than many of our own manmade satellites are at that time.

However, in 2036, seven years later, the asteroid (named Apothus) will return. And scientists now know that if it goes through a particular stretch of space which they've named "the keyhole" on its first trip near earth in 2029, that in seven years it will return and strike the Earth. They even know where it would hit - the Pacific Ocean.

You can watch the segment from Nova here.

Dont worry, we'll have high-tech shield devices by then.

j/k

2036 isnt very far away from now. But lets hope by then, due to technology advances we might be able to save ourselves. (Ok maybe im being too optimistic)

To keep up with the Stargate theme (im suprised this hasnt been mentioned) Isnt Apothus the name of the Goa'uld Lord? ;)

Back in the good old days of SG-1, when jack O'neil was actually going through the gates... ;)
