Huh?

You're right. We should all worship Nissans instead. Thanks.

:wstupid:

Since your typing is near illegible, i'll just go by the title of the thread.

Reply #1 - People like Star Wars because people like things, like you like Nissan 240 SX's. People would say, "How do you like Nissans? I just don't get it."

Reply #2 - If you don't like Star Wars, why'd you sign up here?

@Nissan240SX - Please use punctuation in your posts, remember this is a forum page not a chatbox.

IMO, the question shouldn't be why do people like Star Wars, but instead, who wouldn't like Star Wars. Star Wars revolutionized the film companies and brought about a new era of movies. It has also been away for all kinds of people, from all around the world, to relate to each other through such a strong connection.

In short, Star Wars ROCKS!

EDIT: Only a few people use Star Wars as their religion bases, you would be surprised to find how many of us members are christians. Yes some people have gone too far with their obsession, but not everybody.

Yo...

Look....some franchises/movies/etc pwn. They take you to another universe, make use of your emotions etc.

For example...there are Lord of the Rings fans that put on their armor and roleplay Legolas at weekends. Same goes for some hard-core Warcraft (not WoW, but the whole franchise) fans, who collect little toys of Thrall and Arthas.

You say that's maniacal and can kill you.

I say it's a hobby.

People want to take a break from life. It's hard enough as it is. Some do that by playing games, some do that by sporting, som do that by naming themselves after a car and post on message boards ;)

If those people enjoy their 'Hobby,' who are we to criticice them?

PS:

No-one dies of playing that Star Wars MMO called Galaxies, simply because it sucks :xp:

PSS:

The Nissan 240 SX is an old car..i'd start worshipping a 350Z, that car's way cooler

I could go into a longish spiel about Star Wars and how it relates to the studies of Joseph Campbell and universal human mythological themes and common literary archetypes that pre-date even the written language... but it's too early, and I imagine most of it would be wasted.

Star Wars rocks.

It's a great story, with universal appeal across almost all cultural lines, and was a totally revolutionary and history-making film when it was first released.

I'm not sure what's so difficult about that to understand.

Well, the thing I like about star wars is the concept of balance, which is also found in Buddhism. Even though I'm not a Buddhist, I still find the thought of balance appealing.

The reason for this is the human concept of good and evil. Do we know the difference?

Take for instance when people try to do something rash, like go to war etc.

People go to war because it is the right thing to do, and because our enemies are the evil ones, and that we are the good ones.

So we go to was, kill maim, injure, rape, pillage, and all for the sake of "goodness". We've seen this in history classes since childhood. It amuses me in an ironic way. Three major religions like Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all about peace. It's clearly written in all the religious texts! And what have these three religions been doing the last 1500 - 2000 years? That's right, they have been killing, torturing, raping each other... And all because of the sake of goodness. (Despite it's the same God we believe in, but to whom we chose to pray to in a slightly different way)

What George Lucas has done in star wars, was making an accessible way to religion. Something that was easy to digest since it was made in a modern/classic adventure. There is good and evil in Star Wars, but there is also balance. Notice how the Jedi should be. They should be passive and cautious, otherwise power will corrupt them. And that is what I find fascinating about Star Wars. That it relates to the core of a human being. That the human nature is corrupted as St. Augustine also noted in 300 A.C.

St. Augustine also noted that the human had to abandon his sinful nature, and replace it with a new God given nature. In other words, we could see it as a sacrifice.

We see similarities in Jedies. They fight the dark side (their own dark nature). And they fight it through sacrifice.

All in all, before I get too philosophical, what I see as fascinating in Star Wars, it that it relates to my own world, but in an adventurous way.

It's a great good vs. evil story. The bad guys do terrible things and look like they've got it all locked up, and the good guys win in the end after a heroic struggle. It's sort of like that in Christianity--Satan tries to triumph, Christ's sacrifice means good will win out in the end.

Meh Jae. :p

I agree with you about the good vs. evil story but not the christian viewpoint in it. Religion (other than The Force) has no business in Star Wars in my opinion.

And now back on topic. Star Wars is a classic good vs. evil scenario and It's a working concept because it is compelling to all ages. Another good example of such a concept is Lord of the Rings which is story wise different but has the same "idea".

He was asking why it appealed to Christians so much, and I was answering that specific question. I wasn't advocating putting Christianity into the SW universe.

;)

Then again, if he's talking about having a near-religious following _like_ Christianity (because the grammar makes it open to either of these 2 interpretations), it's because the good guys are really good, the bad guys are really bad, the good guys win and don't die, and they don't have mundane problems like bad hair days, high prices at the gas pumps, and whether they have clean socks in the dryer or not.

Well I don't think Star Wars is a religion. It is just something people like and LucasForums is a nice community where everyone who likes Star Wars can sign up and talk about it, etc. Star Wars has been popular since A New Hope. Oh and welcome to the Forums, Nissan240SX.
