Arátoeldar
Because of my Scandinavian ancestry and my fascination with Tolkien's myths, I have always wanted to try mead. Does anyone know of a good label/brand to try?
Fredi
That’s a sweet alcohol drink right? … Well I can’t recommend anything because I don’t know what Mead is … but if you need some Rum brand damn I can name you more than 12 . That’s our specialty here in the Caribbean.

Does anyone know of a good label/brand to try? I have no idea what it is, but my suggestion is to simply try as many different ones til you find the one you like best! At least you'll have fun! Achilles
The best meads are homemade. Unfortunately if you want the good stuff, you'll have to join the SCA. Also, watch out for the nastiest hangovers imaginable. You've been warned.
Sabretooth
Well, I only know a little about mead. I do know that it had a mention or two in Tolkien's writings, but it was 'the' drink for the Vikings. I'd like to try some, too - but as Achilles says, the best is homemade. I don't like the bit about hangovers, though. Try going out into rural Scandinavia and asking for some, I think that should give you the best... Arátoeldar
Thank you gentlemen. I guess I'll try to find some at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
HerbieZ
There was alot of mead when i went to Cornwall. Practically every place was selling it. That whole holiday reminded me of Oblivion though. I am not really a Lotr fan but Tolkien drew upon alot of Cornish influence for Lotr and Oblivion drew upon Lotr for influence. Lantzen
I live in Sweden, and if the general expresion is that all in Scandinavia drink mead, that ain't true. Il never ever seen someone that have drink it
Pho3nix
We Finns drink mead (non-alcoholic mostly) during Vappu which is in April. We call the 'holiday' Vappu. It's basically just another excuse for teenagers to drink, and It has strong traditional and cultural meaning. The weird thing is as Lantzen pointed out that in Sweden mead is not sold in grocery stores whereas in Finland they do. I can't remember the names of the brands though. spinkle
Thank you gentlemen. I guess I'll try to find some at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. Uh...don't be so sure about that. PLCB are a bunch of right bastards. It's *possible* but not *probable* that you will find some there.
Mace MacLeod
They make the stuff and bottle it at Bunratty Castle in Ireland. Bit of a swim from the eastern US though... And there really isn't enough booze in the world to make SCA people any less annoying, sorry to say. Trust me. When there's booze involved, they all tend to be relentlessly In Character, and you have to practically staple their lips together to get them to shut up. Just my experience... Q
Mead is a very pleasant beverage; sort of a cross between beer and wine, IMO. It goes down easily like beer, but it has the alcoholic content of wine and gets you drunk very quickly if you're not careful. I agree that the best stuff is homemade, but then again I believe that the best liquor is also. You could say that it's just predominant attitude in the area in which I live. I also agree that, like with wine, the hangovers are brutal.
Jae Onasi
And there really isn't enough booze in the world to make SCA people any less annoying, sorry to say. Trust me. That's because you haven't played in Northshield with the _fun_ SCA people. Rennies are different--they get paid to stay in character so they're a little more nutsoid about it. We have a few who are authenticity police, but for the most part we're just casual and want people to enjoy themselves at our events. The people who are really into authenticity in our kingdom have decided to lead by example rather than getting in people's faces about it. They make their clothing, equipment, camping gear, etc. in authentic ways for their own enjoyment, and if you ask them about it, they're more than happy to teach you what they've done. However, they don't look down on anyone else about not-so-period gear. I have been in some places where some people were rather obnoxious about authenticity, but they usually mellowed out after awhile if they didn't want people ignoring them completely. You'll have to come to one of our famous Northshield bardic circles at one of our camping events some time. Homemade brews, lots of singing, staying up waaaaaay too late telling stories....
