SilentScope001
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071108/sc_nm/mice_fear_dc Congrats. Scientists now determine how to erase fear from mice. Instead of running away from cats, now the mice can play with the cats and have fun with them.
Boba Rhett
Gah. Finally. It's good to see scientists laying aside all their frivolous pursuits and going after the breakthroughs that really matter.
mimartin
What is the big deal, I don’t ever remember Jerry being afraid of Tom. Next thing you know scientist will have dogs and cats living together then where will we be?

Sabretooth
This sounds beautifully like something from an early Cold War-era TV advertisement. FEARLESS MICE! They are mice, and they are fearless! Fearless against evil communism! Fearless against the vile Soviets! Get some for yourself today and notice the difference! Jvstice
Usually experimental mice trials are a step on the way for human trials in medicine. I wonder why they are looking to create fearless humans?
SilentScope001
The reason why I sad moronic was because a mouse that does not fear cats is a mouse just begging to be eaten. Fear is needed for the surivial of a race. So, I don't think scientists want to use this research to get rid of fear in humans, because it could very well create humans who would jump off bridges and touch hot stoves because they are "curious". But they are learning how to turn off fear...and that scares me.
Jvstice
Ok then, armies that never tire of going to war? People happy to be expendable?
SilentScope001
Ok then, armies that never tire of going to war? People happy to be expendable? Fearless Trooper: "I'm in a middle of a dangerous warzone, that's cool. No need to go and fight, after all, I'm not in danger. Nothing bad will happen to me. Oooh...flying bullets. Let me grab one and show it to my family!" Maybe I might be overstating this, but I do think that fear is a necessary component of the ultimate military unit. Getting rid of it will only lead to ruin.
PoiuyWired
^^^ QFE. Actually fearless troops would not work well at all. Without a sense of fear you would take waaaay too many unnecessary risks to be a effective combatant, since you will probably be dead before you can acomplish anything. Well, unless you are trying to make fearless exploding ewoks/squigs or something. Think. 100,000 chihuahuas scuttering accross the battlefield with designer collars and pink 'nades ductaped to their backs.
tk102
But they are learning how to turn off fear...and that scares me.No, they're learning how the most primitive part of the chordate brain functions. The rhinecephalon exists in sharks, snakes, birds, fruit flies, cats, and people, and is structurally and functionally the same in each. It's actually a very interesting article IMO. Rev7
Maybe I might be overstating this, but I do think that fear is a necessary component of the ultimate military unit. Getting rid of it will only lead to ruin. I agree. Without fear there could possibly be a lot of casualities because the tactics would be way to...how do I say this...brute, rather than actually thinking about what might happen. I really don't see the need for a mouse not to have fear. There are a lot of other things scientists could do with the money. I am sorry, but I see this 'breakthrough' as non-important.
