A New Beginning

Introduction

Well folks, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I had started another K1RP, that eventually stopped because I decided to join the original K1RP. But now, unfortunately, K1RP has stopped, at least thats what someone told me, as I have been away. And that most of the information has been released. Well, I'm back with my project, after lots of thinking, some serious debating (with my brother, who helped me by trying to counter my arguments.) and lots of time spent just wondering what would happen. So I'm here, asking the community whether or not they would be interested with this, so please leave your opinion, and even the negative ones, because I need all the debate I can get. Also, if you have personal doubts and would like to privately debate with me through PM, feel free to berate me there as well. As my grandfather used to say around election time, "You can't become President without taking **** from opponents."

What's New?

Well, most folks if not all will probably not be interested in this because of the way thing's have happened in the past. But, I'm going to try anyway, and if even a single person helps, contributes, even debates with me, hell, I'm willing to work on it. So, as the title say's I'm here to tell you what's new.

Well, for one, I've learned from modding other games, that big releases like this don't work unless they have staged releases, which is what this project will be doing. A staged release is when the group work's up until a specific checkpoint and then releases the beta mod, then moves onto the next section, while another group comes through and works on quests, etc. This is too ensure that the community has some basis to believe that we can do what we plan to do, and that, should this project abort, we have left all the key's to the community as a whole, to whoever decides they want to pick up the pieces.

Submissions and Info

A major part of this project belongs to the community at large. To conserve lots of time, I am sending a call out to the community to submit the contents released by K1RP original. Also, any suggestions may be posted at our forums at the link that will be provided in the next section.

Sound like a great idea kado! It's always good to see someone pick up the pieces of a fallen mod. I wish you the best of luck with this. Also I think your plan to have staged releases is a good one. Saves you from alot of negative feedback and will give you better bug reporting.

Again good luck!

thanks for the comments Dead. I've worked on other mods for other games who used the staged release strategy, and it's worked well for them, so I figured I'd give it a shot here. Though I am worried that I won't get enough help. The only thing I'm good at in modding is making up quests, writing dialogue and being a concept artist. I need some other big time modders to teach and help me get the job done.

Don't worry, I thought the game was amazing as well, but wouldn't you enjoy playing Sleyheron? Or an expanded tatooine? What if you could have your own house? (But thats another mod by me, not this one.)

Sleyheron I wouldn't mind, but not an extended Tatooine or alternate versions of obtaining the Star Maps. I'm quite happy with how the Star Maps are right now and think that a Rakatan Temple for each one would become extremely redundant. I like the idea of these things being in places you wouldn't normally expect, like a krayt dragon cave or underwater.

See you in 20. xD

Only if I'm doing this by myself. And no one has stepped forward. Though it has only been about a 12 hours. Maybe its just my ego, but I figured some people from the old project would maybe like to help a little, if not fulltime, though I see now, that those people have lost interest and belief in large-scale mods.

For the Rakatan Temple, are you planning to use Quanon's method of creating new areas in association with it?

As for Sleyheron, I think that's too ambitious a mod - especially as there's no in game voiceovers. I know some people have enjoyed mods that either featured no voiceovers or only featured alien languages, but think that would be stretching it for an entire planet.

I think Cris G's method of bringing the cut material list to people's attention will attract modders to restore items. We now already have a restoration of third Black Vulkar base level and someone is already working on that other Shadowlands level. It seems this project is already going on but it just doesn't have a project leader. Until someone that has some real mod making experience heads up the project, I don't forsee either Rakatan Temple or Sleyheron coming to light (and maybe that's for the best.)

Until then, why not wait to see if Cris G can get some additional information from actual Bioware people about said cut content in this thread: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=185850

thanks for the info. I've already sent Cris a PM. And just so you know, It should be pretty easy to make Sleyheron using some reskinned maps, though I'm not sure the community would appreciate that. Can't you add Voiceovers?

I havent really decided on the Rakatan Temple. Though I can say that a somewhat major overhaul is planned for the Rakatan World. Basically just adding a new "Dungeon" to the planet. Alway's thought it was lacking. I will also be contacting the makers of the Vulkar Level 3 (which is technically 2) about incorporating their work into the mod.

As usual, I am here to help with whatever ppl want to do, re the info we have been collecting on past mods and the unfulfilled plans of Biowar for the game. I am happy to share the info gathered, and any mod info that contains restorations. There are great projects underway or completed which is exciting to watch flourish daily.

Re the big projects, we will gather what info we can from the folks at Biowar that are wiling to share with us, it takes time to connect and recieve their input so we will keep passing it on as we receive it.

A couple of suggestions if you want to go ahead with the big things (like Sleheyron):

- create a conceptual description of the module: how big it should be, main storyline quests, sidequests etc. Artistic sketches would be a definite plus.

I'd say try not to go for too much; you can always add things later

- once you know how many areas you need, you'll need people to work on them. This is especially true if you're going to build new areas from scratch (which IMHO you should do, if you're willing to put up with the amount of work needed)

- enlist Quanon, Glovemaster and sithspecter ;P. That's two people who know how to create new areas (Q and s) *and* two people who already worked on Sleheyron (Q and G) right here

- try to organize the work so that you can incrementally play (beta-test) at least part of an area, then another part, then another area etc. There's nothing quite like seeing the results of your work to help mantain momentum in a project this big

So a person with minimal-to-no modding experience wants to do this? My advice would be to abandon it now, gain as much modding experience as possible, and gather yourself a team of enthusiastic and experienced modders.

I'd also advise abandoning Sleheyron. Either it will suck the life out of your project, or it will disappoint. I'm sorry, but that's just the it is.

Exactly what I meant.

I started a huge mod a few months back, and decided to put it on hold for a few weeks. Since then, I've helped restore cut content, learnt a fair much about scripts and how to make custom NPC's and spawn them.

I'm working on one last mod before I go back to it. And then I'll probably have enough experience to learn as I go.

I believe that Quanon still has the leftover Sleheyron modules from the Team Jawa Project (which has failed.) I'm not sue about this, but you could contact him for info. If you're going to do this big release, you need to definitely do Sleheyron. If you released it, even w/o voice overs, people would have a lot of faith in you. I might be game to join the team, but don't count on it yet, I have a large project already going and plans for one more possibly, but I'd love to see this happen!

Perhaps you should just let the smaller restorations continue their course. They will run out soon enough leaving us with just the big ones to restore. (Tatooine temple, Sleheyron, ect.)

That'd be a smart move. Different people are taking on different parts of things to restore, and at the same time learn how to mod KotOR, which could make it easier when those same people would be up to restoring some of the bigger content (though I'm still skeptic concerning Sleheyron).
