rictus135
I am currently in the progres of creating a recruit mod, and was working on a darkside character, when it occured to me that some of the new skin may be considered offensive. There is no nudity or discriminatory images, just this: WARNING: This picture contains iconography that may be offensive to some viewers I am asking the community in general, but would especially appreciate feedback from Shem, Darth Insidious or any other KotorFiles managers who would decide whether this could be hosted on their website. JCarter426
Wha? Are you talking about the pentagram?
rictus135
I am. The inverted pentagram is often associated with Satanism, and while I didn't think much of it when I started this, I though it was better to be safe than sorry.
JCarter426
Ah I see. Well, if you ask me (though you should probably ask someone else ), it isn't offensive. In fact, it's in the street layout of Washington, DC, and you never hear anyone complaining about that. By the way, cool skin.
TheProphet
I'm pretty sure that does not constitute as "inappropriate material". Unless you are openly attacking someone on the forums because of their religion or lack thereof, then there really isn't a problem. I don't think you have to worry about it. Robespierre
Doesn't the pentagram have...a billion other uses apart from Satanism? I thought it was present in most religions...
The Betrayer
Eh.. isn't pentagram a sign for feminism?
JCarter426
Eh...it's a symbol for a lot of things. A few earlier examples were the Sumerian symbol for the five planets, Pythagoras' pentacle representing the five elements, and the Roman symbol for Venus (which, incidentally, led to its association with Satan). There's more than one type of pentagram, though (for instance, the one associated with Satan is inverted). And, point in fact, the type above actually appears in K2, if you look carefully enough. So I don't see how it's a problem at all.
xrefusex
I doubt anybody would take offense to a pentagram. If someone were to be that offended by a shape however, they probably wouldn't be playing Star Wars games in the first place, what with its wizardry, incest and death. rictus135
Well that is sounding like some pretty positive feedback. Good. I quite like the look of my little Sithlord.
redrob41
While I have absolutely no problem with the symbol itself, I wonder if it would have the same meaning in the Star Wars universe as it does in ours. I didn't see it listed on Wookiepedia's Gallery of Symbols, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist there. A good question to ask yourself would be "why did you decide to use an inverted pentagram in the first place?" I agree with JCarter426 that it is a symbol with many meanings, but you seem to have chosen it precisely because you think of it as a satanic symbol, and you want that meaning to be on everyone's mind when they see a Sithlord. After all, a symbol only has any "power" if a lot of people understand what it is supposed to represent (it has to be translated the same way by everyone). You could always create a new symbol (similar to Exar Kun's or Ulic Qel-Droma's Sith forehead mark), or use an existing one (there are some cool SW Criminal Organization logos) if you're still unsure about the skin that you've already made (but I don't think that it would be neccessary). Inyri
Even if he was promoting Satanism, what's inappropriate about it? There's a difference between offensive and inappropriate; I'm sure there are people who find Christianity/Judaism/Islam offensive. That doesn't mean they can't be expressed. rictus135
@redrob and inyriforge: Both are good points. I am aethiest so I am definitely NOT promoting Satanism, kinda silly to not believe in God but believe in Satan. I chose the symbol because it is a fairly generic symbol that is often associated with evil and power, both of which describe a Sithlord. I wanted something generic, because it is easier to understand (and draw!) than symbols only a handful of people know about. [Off Topic] Although the war with Exar Kun could be part of his backstory.... Hmm, that is certainly something to think about.
Darth InSidious
I thought it was present in most religions... ...No. @topic: I'd try bump-mapping that pattern onto the head as well (using the bump-map tool in whichever image-editor you have) and then toning the red down a little. JCarter426
...No. It actually is present in a surprising amount. I doubt anybody would take offense to a pentagram. If someone were to be that offended by a shape however, they probably wouldn't be playing Star Wars games in the first place, what with its wizardry, incest and death. Good point. While I have absolutely no problem with the symbol itself, I wonder if it would have the same meaning in the Star Wars universe as it does in ours. I didn't see it listed on Wookiepedia's Gallery of Symbols, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist there. Well, since it actually is in K2, I don't think it's that far a stretch. jonathan7
@topic as one of the 'religious' (a devout Christian) I do not find/think this inapporpriate, I think the skin looked pretty cool. Even if he was promoting Satanism, what's inappropriate about it? There's a difference between offensive and inappropriate; I'm sure there are people who find Christianity/Judaism/Islam offensive. That doesn't mean they can't be expressed. QFT; The old quote often attributed to the legendary Voltaire; 'I disagree with what you have to say, but will defend to the death your right to say it'. Darth Xander
I don't think that could be seen as offensive or inappropriate, after all its just a symbol that means many things.
TheProphet
rictus135, I think the best people to ask about this would be moderators. Why don't you just send one of them a pm? In the future, for things of this nature, I think it would be best to ask them as they are more the people of authority on that subject.
Inyri
LucasForum moderators are not 'the authority' on what the community finds offensive/inappropriate. They're the authorities on what is suitable for LucasForums, which is not what rictus was asking.
Robespierre
I suppose he asked because he didn't know if people would just flame his threads? Something like "Oh noes! A satanic Yoda!" And just for interest's sake, I went to Wikipedia: Christianity The pentagram was used as a Christian symbol for the five senses,[10] and if the letters S, A, L, V, and S are inscribed in the points, it can be taken as a symbol of health (from Latin salus).[citation needed] Medieval Christians believed it to symbolise the five wounds of Christ. The pentagram was believed to protect against witches and demons.[11] The pentagram figured in a heavily symbolic Arthurian romance:[11] it appears on the shield of Sir Gawain in the 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. As the poet explains, the five points of the star each have five meanings: they represent the five senses, the five fingers, the five wounds of Christ,[12] the five joys that Mary had of Jesus (the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the Assumption), and the five virtues of knighthood which Gawain hopes to embody: noble generosity, fellowship, purity, courtesy, and compassion. Probably due to misinterpretation of symbols used by ceremonial magicians, it later became associated with Satanism and subsequently rejected by most of Christianity sometime in the twentieth century.[11] The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has traditionally used pentagrams and five-pointed stars in Temple architecture, particularly the Nauvoo Illinois Temple[13] and the Salt Lake Temple. These symbols derived from traditional morning star pentagrams that are no longer commonly used in mainstream Christianity.[14] Judaism The pentagram was the official seal of the city of Jerusalem for a time.[11] Due to the similarity of the star shapes, it is occasionally confused with the Star of David by those unfamiliar with the symbols. TheProphet
LucasForum moderators are not 'the authority' on what the community finds offensive/inappropriate. They're the authorities on what is suitable for LucasForums, which is not what rictus was asking. I apologize, I guess I misread what he stated then. What I was trying to say is that they are the authority on what is "Inappropriate Material" as in things you are not allowed to post. Still he cites that he is looking for specific input from Shem, DarthInsidius as well as "or any other KotorFiles managers who would decide whether this could be hosted on their website." Also, if he is looking for what would be inappropriate for the KotorFiles site, why would he ask here and not over there? I realize he is trying to ask the community in general, but I think it would be better to post something like this in the KotorFiles forums. TheProphet
Well...This is where the community in general is. :)Didn't we already decide he was primarily asking the community? You said so yourself... That's fair, and I do see your point. I guess the only thing that got me with his post was his specific reference to KotorFiles managers and worries about hosting files on that site. At any rate, I was only trying to help, and to reiterate what I said earlier, I doubt you will offend many people with a pentagram, it seems from the feedback on this thread that people are generally okay with it. The skin looks great by the way, keep it up!
