Star Wars Galaxies Trial Impressions and Questions

Okay, so I downloaded the 14-day trial and discovered some interesting info after I finally logged out of the game...

1. 90 levels?! Holy crap! How long does it take to get there?!

2. I hear you can't do missions for Vader or Luke Skywalker anymore. True?

3. What level do I have to be to even get CLOSE to said characters?

4. Is this game a boring waste of time? What's your opinion?

Thanks!

You should really ask this in the Galaxies forum, but I'll answer anyway.

1. Doesn't take that long, with an entertainer you can get 90 in a week or less. Trader about the same, but you use a lot of resources, combat toons, it takes a while, but as a trader or ent you can't be as effective as a normal combat toon. And you cannot respec from trader/ent to combat toon and be cl90, you start out as cl5. It'll take about a month or more to get to 90 on a combat toon if you rush through the levels. You should take it easier. I recommend you take it slow and really learn your profession along the way. Have fun.

2. As far as I know you can still get missions from both of them.

3. get close to? right off of tansari haha. But really I would recommend at least waiting to cl50. Now if you mean killing them, you cannot.

4. The game is what you make of it. Some people find it boring and repettitive. Others are having a blast. Me personally I have a lot of fun when they aren't swinging the Nerf bat around.

Galaxies stopped being worthwhile when there started being levels. It's not worth your time -- there are much better MMO's, and all SWG does is destroy cannon with one swift stroke (to quote Tarkin).

In short, they removed all the content that made the game great and replaced it with content meant to mimic everquest, WoW, etc. If you want an MMO, play one of those -- from what I hear, they at least got it right.

Now Now.. It may be a painful shadow of it's former glory(read: Pre-CU), but it is rather fun to play now.

Besides, Space still beats all the other fairies and dragons MMOs in my estimation.

I miss the original Star Wars Galaxies :( Good times they were, hardly any Jedi running around. It was hard to become a Jedi back in the good old days. Like Inyri said, SWG ruined itself with the NGE, turning it into World of Warcraft. I've never played Everquest, so I can't really relate to it.

Simply by virtue of it being Star Wars, many times have I been tempted to play it... but I'm not a big fan of monthly subscription fees - but that's another issue.

It looks interesting, but I doubt i'd ever have time to play it - that or it would take over completely :xp:

For me it took over completely to the point where I was paying my subscription and my brothers (during the holo-grind, no less). I finally got to the point where I realized it was ridiculous, the game sucked, and I was wasting my life on something that was really only making me uphappy, so I stopped the payment on both accounts and haven't looked back.

This was all before the CU, mind you -- SWG was long dead before that ever went into effect. :)

It's got to be tried whether you end up liking it or not... It's Star Wars
hehe, that kinda reminds me of when the game "Enter the Matrix" came out. i tried it because it was based on The Matrix, but then i found out that the game was really repetitive. worse still, i found out about the terrible save system within my first couple hours of playing it, and then i just quit the game altogether.

lesson learned: don't play a game because of the label slapped onto it. research the game and decide if its really worth your money. ;)

Why are you trying to force people to play it?

People are more than welcome to listen to the advice of others. Just because you're an SWG fan doesn't mean you should advise people to ignore advice, whether it's positive or negative.

I didn't say people shouldn't take your advice. I said people should be allowed to make up their own mind based on the evidence given. Playing the trial is not the only way to determine whether or not you want to play a game (for instance I don't need to play the WoW trial to know I never want to play it).

You should not try to pressure people into playing a trial because it's "the only way to know if you'll like the game." Mention it once, and if folks like that idea they will do it, but they don't want to be hassled or pressured into trying it. :)

I played Galaxies for years and absolutely loved it. Eventually it changed into something else so like the rest of the player base i rebelled and left. However, i joined a year later and although being the same game, elements in it were brand new to me and i played it all over again. Unfortunately i had to leave due to it starting to sap my life away. I could still go back to it because i think about fun times i had on it almost every day.

If your bored, like talking to people, like Star Wars and want to explore a corner of the universe. Go ahead.

Note - I was a beta tester and played up until the CU. I played a little bit of the current game version which as others have said is the NGE. But my experience with it is limited.

1. Unless you are an entertainer who can afk macro the whole way it does take some time. The low populations on most of the servers make grouping difficult and some of the content is difficult to do solo. They do have xp buffs you can get from entertainers, but it's still a long road. What really annoys me, they put level based characters in, so unless the people in your group are around your current level, the amount of xp you will get will be terrible. Ok, stopping before a rant, the old game has been gone far too long.

2. You can, they randomly show up in different cities throughout the galaxy. I've seen Vader a number of times in Theed and Luke shows up in Coronet on Corellia. I can't imagine this has changed much.

3. The missions they give were mostly hunt type pve and pvp [kill __ # of baddies]. So I guess it depends upon what you're looking for.

4. Yes. It's not even a shadow of it's former self. They've gone so far away from the timeline it's set in, it's just a mess. I would stay away from this at all costs.

Just writing about this brings back so much negativity in me. I mean, I understand that changes are bound to happen, but the way in which they were handled in that game was just horrible. I will never play another SoE game again.

Ok so what it comes down to is: People who quit the game say it's not worth playing, People that currently play the game say its fun, but not as good as it used to be pre-cu.

I would suggest playing t for yourself and seeing if you like or hate it. It costs you nothing to do the trial.

And those of you that say WoW is better: Meh that's your opinion. Me personally, I tried WoW and hated it. I still enjoy Galaxies.

Galaxies has: _______________________World of Warcraft has:

Player houses _______________________none

In depth crafting_____________________weak crafting

HIGHLY customizable characters________Cookie cutter appearances

SPACE _____________________________um... nothing?

WoW IS a more complete game, I'll give it that. It is also yet another fairies and dragons mmo. Something I personally cannot stand.
