Rabish Bini
I'm really getting sick of this Vista bagging. I've been using it for ages now and I have NEVER gotten a single problem. I even got Duke 3D to work on it without an emulator, and that's a DOS game. Besides, that isn't really the point of the thread.
Da_Man_2423
I reckon it's just your comps that suck A lot of people's computers that would normally work as intended apparently suck then.

Yeah, this is not how to go about supporting Vista. Way to be closed-minded and rude.

Scatter
If Vista wasn't so bloated and full of pretty-colorful-shiny-glossy-crap, and wasn't so dumbed down for the computer illiterate, I'd probably like it more. As it stands, I spent a full day disabling all sorts of annoying crap and trying to get it to play nice with my XP network (I still can't go from Vista -> XP got it backwards, can't connect XP -> Vista). almost laughably common misconception now. really don't get the negativity on vista at all. almost certain xp didn't cop anywhere near as much - and it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more unstable out of the box than vista. just a few things on the bit i bolded... one of the many advantages vista has over xp is that is far, far easier to optimize the sob. xp could be a freaking mare when it came to determining what background service did what, and whether deactivating the thing would bring up a bsod or crash. nowhere near as problematic in vista. in fact, my old pc - which my 8yo son and wife now use - is a decent but by no means state of the art rig. as a precaution, i set that rig up to dual boot the existing xp installation until i was comfortable with vista. by the time i had optimised the two o/s's vista was comfortable using a smaller memory footprint than xp on startup. as for the 'dumbing down'... well. MS really were damned if they did, damned if they didn't there. the most common complaint in this respect has easily been the UAC. it's basically a rip off of (in gui form) what *nix users have had for years. people were crying out for better security combined with easier operability for ages. ms provide it - fairly effectively it has to be said - and they get slated for it. simply cannot win. and if you're running a 64 bit machine, there really is no contest. xp64 was a complete and utter pile dog turd that even now is plagued by driver, stability and compatability issues. i've been running vista x64 on my current quad core (with sli'd 8800 gtx's btw ) for the past six or seven months with nary an issue. in fact, before i built my current rig, i was running vista on my old rig practically since it launched and i don't recall a single bsod in that time. i simply wouldn't even dream of going back to xp now. vista is far more secure, stable and just plain looks cleaner than xp ever did. sage advice: research favoured apps and hardware compatibility before considering any OS change. if you dont, and things go wrong...you know whose fault it is? qfe. Aash Li
You know, I didnt watch all of that video, but I wouldnt be surprised if one of the victims didnt assualt the jerk for tricking them. I know I would feel like it! O.o Out of the box at start, XP was a lot more stable than ME ever was, and that is what lead to its popularity. Yes there was problems, yes there were security leaks. Namely that stupid windows messenger that you had to prybar out of the system. >.> Vista, I dont like, its pretty, but it doesnt need all those silly widgets on the screen to take up RAM and whatnot. Wheres the app bar like Mac has? lol And the annoying bouncing programs that want attention... Theres also compatibility problems with games... Im still wondering what makes gaming in vista+dx10 so much better than XP+ dx9.whatever+nvidia... when they look the same to me... especially since I can run them on max settings. O.o Anyway, if you like Vista great for you! Im not trying to get you to switch back. Just dont harp on me for using XP.
Astrotoy7
Of course, if you have to buy a new machine you're pretty much hosed, since it is rather difficult to buy a new pc that isn't running Vista. Not true. Companies like Asus, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Dell are again shipping XP units. Part of this is to do with the netbook revolution At specialist pc places, you can also request XP be installed into a pc or a notebook you are having built. MS formally recognised consumers demand for XP and extended XP support until 2014 (it was originally 2009) dont just take my word for it of course >> facts destroy lies I have to admit though, Vista + DirectX10 + nVidia Graphics = Awesome gaming. someone obviously hasnt heard of AMD/ATIs 4870 or the "(nvidia)GTX280 killer" 4870X2. Head to the tech from for benchies and discussion * * * At Aash. Of course staying on XP is your prerogative, but you musn't make such glib statements to rationalise it Vista, I dont like, its pretty, but it doesn't need all those silly widgets on the screen to take up RAM and whatnot. The sidebar can be turned off. Two clicks and you'll never see it again. Wheres the app bar like Mac has? lol It doesnt have one by default, But if you really want that feature(like many do), objectdock is great, and free And the annoying bouncing programs that want attention... UAC(user account control) can be turned off, of course (Its the first thing I do on a new install) Theres also compatibility problems with games... It depends what games. Of course, we are quickly reaching the time where having XP will be the incompatibility I'm still wondering what makes gaming in vista+dx10 so much better than XP+ dx9.whatever+nvidia... when they look the same to me... It depends on what monitor you have really. If you have a large display/high rez monitor the differences are quite profound for DX10 enhanced games. Your comment is akin to someone tuning into HD Digital TV with a 34cm wonky old TV and wondering "what the big deal is" So yes, people can use what they want, but as long as they know the full facts, they can at least say they have made an *informed decision* * * * as for the Mojave experiment, I don't get why people are blabbering on about "being tricked" Anyone familiar with experimental protocols would be well versed with experimental blinding to reduce bias. It is used prolifically in medical studies, nuclear and particle physics investigations, and forensic/legal investigations. mtfbwya
Aash Li
The blabbering about being tricked is based on the hoaky pepsi challenges... I probly shouldnt say I will never try Vista cause if my mom gets a new computer chances are it will have vista and Ill be learning all I want to about it. heh Also I have a 19" flat panel widescreen monitor. So its not like Im using a 12" crt monitor from 5 years ago.

90SK
just my two cents here: I've run vista on both my new and old laptops. I haven't really had any problems save one, so I don't necessarily buy into all the Vista hate. Whenever I complain about a random issue with my computer (like GIMP crashing, or HL2 not working), my friends blame it on Vista. It's annoying as hell, people jump to conclusions about the OS based on ignorance and hearsay. That one issue by the way is the KotOR series not working. Hell, with SCUMMVM I can even run Monkey Island on this machine, but for some damned reason KotOR doesn't work. I've applied all described fixes from literally every source I can find on the internet, and still it doesn't work. Luckily I kept my old desktop so I use that for KotOR purposes, but it's irritating to have this big machine in my room taking up space. Oh well.
