Favorite Protagonist

Hmmm...thinking about this one made me realise that most of my favourite games down the years don't really involve protagonists, being as they are sports & strategy experiences.

The great games that did have such invariably had quite nondescript, if enigmatic, characters in the lead (Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, GTA III, Silent Hill, Brennan from the X space-trading games).

So for me it's Lara Croft. I've played her in 5 games, tho' yet to finish the last one, and really do feel that behind the hype and dodgy yet faithful films lies a genuinely strong, deep and passionate character.

2nd would be Cloud Strife...but as he was overshadowed by the villain he doesn't get the gong.

In addition to some that have already been mentioned, I think the Prince from the first Prince of Persia game (Sands of Time) and Tidus from Final Fantasy X were good protagonists. Abe from the Oddworld games wasn't too bad, either.

While I really like the Half-Life games, I wouldn't call Gordon much of a protagonist at all.

My question is, why is he that timid? Seriously, and Rinoa is his exact opposite.
I wouldn't call him timid... He's just the strong silent type  At any rate, he doesn't believe in showing his feelings (perhaps he considers it a waste of time and energy?), and thus expects others to do the same and not whine to him.

I believe that they're the "opposites attract", as opposed to birds of a feather :D

Naruto in the japanese version. his story was actually pretty sad but in the american version hes a big douche. Conker, he was fun to listen to. Master chief simply because of the books, u dont really see any of his depth in the games (hes still fairly shallow and cliche though). I'm excited for the secret apprentice. Ad i kno he doesnt talk but Hero from Fable. The ever changing Link.

Gordon Freeman... I guess it's because he's a college graduate with a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics... (I'm pretty sure... I'll have to replay the opening sequence tomorrow to check) and he isn't crippled by the Ph.D. he actually can function in the world.

And, think, he gets a Crowbar off the ground and then a 9mm... and he manages to get out of Black Mesa, even though he has a Ph.D.!

Otherwise: First Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Blair. Who would've thought that Wing Commander would've been dragged in somehow!

Being qualified for every fighter aboard a Carrier is a pretty hard thing to do... especially when you've been shuttled off to Insystem Security for ten years! (WC2)

Well... that's about it.

Hmm... favorite protagonists are:

Kyle Katarn: Jedi Knight Series

Revan: KotOR

The Exile: TSL

Glorfindel: BFME 2

Altair: Assassin's Creed (he just looks cool)

However, since I mostly just play RPGs, my favorite protagonist would just be me all the time.

I guess it's mostly for nostalgia... but Ash Ketchum from Pokémon.

Not a game protagonist. Ash Ketchum is a character from the anime of pokemon. He was based off of Red who was the protagonist of Red/Blue/Yellow. The next Protagonist was Gold who was for G/S and Crystal who was for C.

How'd I know somebody was going to say this? Argh.

Well Red has no personality so I'm not going with him. Uhhh, let's see... I like Dave and Bernard from Maniac Mansion.

just cuz he cant talk doesnt mean he doesnt have character

Perhaps not, but when you say 'your player from KOTOR', it's tantamount to saying 'me, cause I rock'.

And he doesn't have a character, as it's left to the player to define his character. Characters such Revan and The Exile are subjective - no two characters will be the same because everyone will play it differently.
