Aside from the emitter area, the hilt's texture looks oddly flat. If anything, you should make another texture for the main hilt, or use a plain brush metal texture. (which you can find easily with a google search)

It's not flat. It is actually quite detailed.

Aside from the emitter, I can only see a tiny bit of detail. Just because it is actually detailed, if you can't see any of it, its going to look like you used the paintbucket tool.

I can see the detail, but its still hard to see. Like I said, a good brush metal texture wouldn't hurt it at all.

Then you must have X-ray vision or something, because all I can see is some overexposed grey lighting and a blurry inscription. >.>

Not X-Ray, but I do have some really good eyes. Well, good enough to notice the difference between 2 shades of gray. :)

Its slightly more detail than a MS Paint job. Its still a lack of detail though.

Granted, though not by much. Gradient and brush metal as you mentioned would be a large improvement. Canderis should also consider faux-bumpmapping the lettering, as well.

It actually was brushed metal. It is just a prototype hilt as it is my experementing with 3ds max's modeling and mapping capability's. It also was my attempt to make the texture from scratch.

UPDATE: Well to improve my modeling skillz some more I decided to model a new area again. This time using the wonders of 3ds max. I got complements from trigger-god on it, and thats pretty rare for me, so I think its good.
