Darth Avlectus
Story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090929/ap_on_re_us/us_baby_sitter_backlash_mich Uhh what? What the hell? A mother watching out for children at a bus stop qualifies as an "Unlicensed Daycare Center"? How does that work, exactly? She is a neighborhood mom watching kids at a freaking bus stop. Making sure another Jaycee Lee Dugard case doesn't happen because of some sicko that got let out of prison, like Phillip Gerrito. Ugh.
Godric Volturi
On Tuesday, agency Director Ismael Ahmed... There's the problem right there. Just kidding. ^^ Haha... but I agree that is a very stupid thing to have had happened. I mean seriously... it's not really even babysitting if it's family friends... it's having their kids over for a few minutes to play with her own kids. ><
HK-42
Wow, government in Michigan got issues. This is completely wrong, I remember one time my parents went on a trip for a month my friends mom who was a teacher at the school we went to took me to her house for half the day, then dropped me off at my grandparents. So in Michigan this was illegal.
cire992
Sounds like even the bureaucrats think this is dumb. Which is good, it isn't like she's trying to steal anyone's business. False alarm, I guess.
Darth Avlectus
I just don't get where people's heads are at these days. Especially in law. Zealous hyperbole maybe?
Totenkopf
Mostly a lack of common sense tethered to a one-size-fits-all mentality.
Litofsky
Obviously, she was taking the kid's lunch money, and thus running a 'business.' At least the governor/other people are attempting to fix the problem.
Jae Onasi
Gawd, I called Child Protective Services in my town to report a mother who is homeless and living out of her van (in March, in WI, where it gets well below freezing at night still) with 5 kids, one of whom is autistic. They had gotten kicked out of the homeless shelter because she couldn't bring herself to be responsible enough to take care of her kids there. They had the audacity to tell me they couldn't do anything about it because it wasn't 'neglect' (hello! Kids sleeping in a cold van!!). Then I read this insane article about an overzealous state agency. Sheesh.
JediAthos
Yeah...I laughed when I read this. It's just another case of a poorly written law that should never have been passed in it's original language. To the credit of the lawmakers at least they are trying to fix their mistake, too often they deny, deny, deny.
jrrtoken
They had the audacity to tell me they couldn't do anything about it because it wasn't 'neglect' (hello! Kids sleeping in a cold van!!).IMO, I can the state's reasoning behind that; they probably didn't want to get into a legal nightmare if the scenario wasn't bona-fide child abuse/neglect. That doesn't mean that the state was right in that situation, but I can see their reasoning for not getting involved.
El Sitherino
This is what happens when people go by the letter of the law instead of the intent.
Darth Avlectus
I am glad the bureaucrats dept. are getting real about this at least. I'd ask where the state's law officials' heads are at, but I'm afraid I already know the answer to that one. I don't mean to get all philosophical: safe community is a sort of "meeting halfway" deal where everyone puts in their fair share. Government and law enforcement cannot be everywhere all the time. Hence proactive citizenship. Besides, this case was quite clearly an act of community--not some business network. All the time this sort of thing can and does discourage those with bad intentions. Discourage if not outright prevent them. A charitable act, though small, but done all the time out of common decency. The small stuff makes all the difference. Common sense. That doesn't mean that the state was right in that situation, but I can see their reasoning for not getting involved. If it had been summer time and they hadn't been kicked out of the local homeless shelter because the mother couldn't get off her butt to give her kids their medication and follow the shelter rules, it might have been one thing. However, she had no way to cook them dinner, keep them warm, get them cleaned up or even get them toileted properly in a minivan in WI in early March when the temp is below freezing at night time. The kids were not in a safe and secure situation and needed to be in foster care until mom could get her stuff together enough to be able to care for them properly. If I'd been in Chicago, those kids would have been in a safe home within a couple hours of my call.
Tobias Reiper
MY GAWD, HELPING MAKE SURE CHILDREN ARE SAFE?!?! Honestly, how can members of our race fall to such a degree o-of...KINDESS?!
