I'm currently Windows ME and to tell you the truth, i haven't had any problems with it until now (see help me! thread)

So the question is should i upgrade to XP?

i heard a lot of bad feedback from XP users, saying it has many bugs.

Please let me know-

what's good about it?

what's bad about it?

why aren't you using it?

etc.

your input would be most appreciated

Before you decide, realize there are other OS's you can "upgrade" to that might be better than ME.

Win98SE

Win2k

Linux (Redhat, Mandrake, etc)

MacOS (hey, we are talking about ME here!)

If you don't mind buying more ram and like the fancy desktop gui stuff, XP might be right up your alley.

Every Windows OS has been pretty buggy, but after awhile they release patches so it eventually becomes acceptable for the general user. But, as to which one you start with, its up to you. If you can try them out free, that might be your best bet.

PS: Even if you're paranoid like me and you want to avoid that "Authentication" crap and get the "Corporate Edition" instead of that crappy "Home" version, you still have the Media Player Spyware fiasco to deal with, and its slower than 2k. No thanks...

i would vote either 98se since you already know ME or XP, i cant say i have had one problem related to the OS while using XP, but i have seen many a problem with ME, maybe i just got unlucky, but it seems like a throw together, pos, of an OS to me. :D another option is installing 98se (or ME) and also XP that way you can still play Duke3D, Dark Forces or other DOS based games.

It really depends on what you want the system for:

Win98SE is apparently the quickest OS for playing games, so go with that if that is what you want, but I believe that it is full of bugs, I had got to the stage where every second reboot told me my registry was corrupt.

I think both XP and 2K are a lot more stable, having used both, with XP definitely the most stable OS I have ever used.

XP does everything that you want it to, and probably more, and I don't want to know where everyone thinks the bugs are in the program either..... I think that it is a fallacy, more of a misconception than the truth, although it is a little less user friendly than the older 98/ME builds, coming from the NT/2K history that XP is built upon.

I have both XP Pro and Win 2K Pro.

Both with their latest service packs.

If I had to choose - definetly XP Pro.

It just seems more compatible, and feels more stable. Win 2K has crashed a couple times before. XP has not - same applications.

This is a completely subjective observation - take it for what it's worth.

problems with XP that are undeniable

1. expensive (coming from sum1 whos neva bought an OS in his life)

2. change bits in yer pc ... have to fone MS to sort it

3. Looks like a 2 yr old designed it (tho i hear there is a old style "skin")

4. wont run dos games .... THIS IS A BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDD problem

5. need new drivers (altho this is but a time consuming problem ... not a major 1)

it does have a backwards compatibility mode

this means that if you have a program which ran on an older version of windows but not on xp. you can tell xp to run it as if it was windows 95/98/me/2000 etc

so effectivly it contains all the other windows versions

if you are gonna get a microsoft windows, xp is the one to get

the question is do you want a version of microsoft windows??

(i reckon you should get xp :) )

Even though I'll agree that Win2kPro was "more stable" for me than Win98SE here's what it amounted to:

Win98SE: After a full day of being used, starts to slow down and eventually crashes. Solve by rebooting often.

Win2KPro (and yes, even after all the latest updates and service patches): BSOD (blue screen of death) every so often, but always as fast as can be otherwise. Usually it would crash every couple of days.... ALWAYS while multitasking I might add!

And yes, Win2K has "compatability mode" as well, but nothing is perfect, you always lose some compatability between Windows versions, sadly.

PS: In response to the bottom post, that's how USB devices are always supposed to work in Windows (so long as you have the port enabled in your Device Settings)! ; )
