Tyrion
I thought of this a while ago... Martin's dream was to be judged not by the color of your skin, but by your personality. So, is the internet his dream? We dont judge each other by the color of our skin, but by our hearts. We see a troll, and we know he is bad and such, without looking at his skin, judging him by his acts.We judge a moderator and such as a nice person, someone we can trust, even if they are black or white or blue. So is the internet Martin's dream?

ET Warrior
No, the internet was not Martin Luther King Jr's dream. His dream was that people would not be racist. I doubt it had anything to do with computer message boards.
StormHammer
I can see where you're coming from, Tyrion. For all intents and purposes, these message boards do convey personality to a certain extent...but it is a measured and even manufactured personality. Words can mean a great deal...but some people just use words without meaning. To see and interact with someone in real life, you can see and judge more, from expressions and mannerisms. It's true we cannot judge someone by their colour, or anything else, except what people choose to say. My point is, is this enough to truly convey someone's personality? And if not, can it truly match such a vision as that held by Martin Luther King? Rascism isn't just about intention...it's about what we've been bred to believe, right back in our formative years, and sometimes the chains of the past are hard to break. Am I a rascist? All I can say is that I try not to be.

Jah Warrior
I think that in part you are right, for the following reasons:- before playing games online I had really had very little contact with folks form other countries. I must admit I had preconceptions or perhaps prejudices you could say. From what I've seen and experienced I have thankfully found that there are good and bad in every nation. For example I, being brought up in the UK had an inate fear or dislike for the German people. We are shown war films from a young age and obviously the Germans are always portrayed as the baddies. It's hard to shake off 28 years of propaganda and brain washing. Suffice to say some of my best online friends are from Germany and they are great fellas. Obviously they arent all great but for a whole society to be perfect is impossible. The last thing on my mind when I bought JK2 was that it would get me buddies all over the world but it has, and as such it was undoubtedly the very best £35 i ever spent. It's definitely helped me realise that people are just people no matter where they come from. to sum up i'll give you one of my favourite quotes from maya Angelou:- "People are far more alike than un-alike!!!" Taos
You know Tyrion.....it's good to see you using some critical thinking skills. I think there is some kind of correlation between his message and what you are talking about.......I just think it is much simpler. Like what ET Warrior said...."he hoped ppl wouldn't be racist." obi
I find this correct. I don't think MLK jr.'s dream was the internet itself, but relationships with people as they happen on the internet. Rasicim and prejudice are apart of human nature, and it will never be gone, however. There will always be a closed-minded pric that doesn't understand we are all equal. When some person of another race calls be a cracker, or some other white rasict remark, I choose to ignore them, for I know that I am only stooping to their level by responding. Personaly, I hope we achieve the "star trek" point of view, were everyone considers themselves equal. (If you have ever watched it, you know of what I speak)

BCanr2d2
In some ways, what you have said is true, but in many ways is the opposite. It gives people an anominity, a way to be someone they are not, since everything is so impersonal on the Net.
