Chewbacco
I am asking your opinion here. What will happen if a lightsaber existed in the real world an someone found out how to make one. What would the government do? What will people think? What will Star Wars fans think? Wil this weapon be secretly used for the army? Or will it instanly be outlawed and the building plans be thrown away? What do you think will happen? I will post later on my opinion.
Taos
Star Wars fans would go nuts.........the gov't would try to find some type of use for it. While testing it, ppl would be losing lots of limbs because of the laser...... I would steal one for myself !
SettingShadow
It would be kept a secret from the public while the government in secret arm their troops with them . Then some hostile country will put in spys/spies (spell?) to find out how to build them.... then it will be a great war with lightsabers. And maybe some nuclear weapons for backup. Sounds reasonbile to me. I would of course steal the plans on how to making one
Ratmjedi
I would build one. I wouln't care it they were outlawed. I would still have one and if anybody tried anything then I would kick some ass. The government would probally use them as a tool more than a weapon though. There are really no lasers to deflect and I don't think that the Force would come with that Lightsaber. Wouldn't be that handy in combat but would be good for engineers. Darklighter
Terrorists would hijack it...you think I'm joking...
GonkH8er
Terrorist with lightsabers? Can you imagine what would happen? Nothing. We'd have snipers a mile away picking them off with ease. They'd get owned. It's just like a big powerful glow in the dark knife. It's only really deadly to anyone but yourself if you have jedi reflexes and perception. Wasn't there some secret group spending million researching it though?

GonkH8er
no no... read it again. what i said was correct.... it's only deadly to people other than yourself........ IF you have jedi relexes or were you trying to be funny?
BCanr2d2
IF there was a lightsabre ever really made, then it would only really lead to trouble, since they are quite a dangerous weapon.... As much as we would love to, we can't un-invent things....
Reb Starblazer
The same thing would happen that happened with nuclear weapons. Originally it was only one country that had them, then another, then another, and another... What originally started out as one country's great weapon, their ace in the hole against everyone else, eventually spread to everyone else. Now, they can't go back. I'm sure the U.S. and Russia would love to get rid of all their Nukes, but they can't, because they need to keep some because everyone else has them now, to destroy them would mean falling behind. The same thing would happen with this. If they were used as mining tools, then someone would steal them and use them for malicious purposes. Anything that can be used to harm and destroy, will be, that's unfortunately the way we are. Eventually almost everyone in the U.S.(then other places) would have a Lightsabre, it'll be like owning a gun. And not everyone will have it just for "protection" either. There are just some things we shouldn't tamper with, yet we always do. As BCanr2d2 said, we can't uninvent things AFTER we realize how dangerous they are. I believe R. Buckminster Fuller said it best with "Humanity is acquiring all the right technology, for all the wrong reasons. "
Lady In Red
If there was lightsabers, I would have a nice yellow one! And use it for good,
Chewbacco
If you think of it, a lightsaber is a very powerful laser and lasers are being replaced with projectile weapons, it is used on an plane to intercept missles in flight and destroy them. We have the power that is needed and the technology that is needed to make this weapon. But one problem, if we do make one with a big bulky machine, the laser (lightsaber) will go on forever. What I think is that it will be outlawed, or this weapon will threaten world peace and create WWIII!
Guardian Omega
It's quite impractical for a main weapon, unless of course you got the jedi reflexes as someone said above. You wouldn't want to get hit with a grenade or some other area-effect weapon would you. It would be a good close range weapon though for all jobs in the military. Wes Marrakesh
It's pretty much useless for combat without the Jedi skills.... exept for a bayonet..... I'm hoping that it would be used for things like mining and people will realize that it is too impractical for a military weapon.... but I somehow don't see that happening.. C'jais
It'd be used as a last resort/suicide weapon in the army - when the poor soldier has nothing left he flicks on his saber and go "ballistic" on the enemy troops - with 80% of the users ending up cutting off their own limbs before reaching the enemy. That weapon is insanely dangerous to the wielder, it's totally different than a sword, because even the slightest touch renders you a casualty. It could be used in efficient mining, if it was mounted on machines, though.
Mex
You need force powers to actually use the lightsaber properly! Because if theres a grenade, you need push to throw it back, if there was WWIII!
JediNyt
Well it would defect bullets and the like but noone could do that without getting super lucky. Only a Jedi can really use one. But if you got good enough with enough training on the low power setting you would own at non gun combat. I would still have one. Id take out the power charger thing and carry it around as a costume piece. Id only use it if I was in real danger. But Id train every day to not hit myself. Ratmjedi
I doubt that a Lightsaber would deflect a bullet. I think that it would actually melt the bullet instead of delecting it.
JediNyt
Im sorry deflect is the wrong word. I meant stop bullets. It would probably vaporize them.
Kstar__2
if there where real lightsabers here, only martial arts specialists would be able to wield them. otherwhise you would have a couple of morons hacking in with a lightsaber:D
-s/<itzo-
i think it would be useless since regular people are not fit to use it. so what if you got a light saber, you still not fast enough to dodge a bullet. so its nonsense to make it because we don't have the power that the jedis possessed. as far as the star wars fans they will find a way to steal it from the gov't. take it home and probably keep messing around with till' they accidently chop their heads off. [KOC]Qui-Zan
IF lightsabers were invented hardy anyone would use them, forget you dreams of a army using them they all cut thier own arms/legs off with them. The only REALISTIC use for them would be to cut meat effortlessly or in industrial machines
JediNyt
They would be great in mining and rescue opperations.
Ratmjedi
I really would of enjoyed having a Lightsaber yesterday cause we were cutting wood with a chainsaw. That Lightsaber would make cutting through it a piece of cake. Like a hot knife through butter.
ForceElf
It would depend on what country got it and then what leader said country had. but it would be the same thing that is going on now between George Bush and nuculear weapons in Iraq(spelling).
