I hate you now. Reading that almost makes me not want to go to see the film, cos I'm sure I'll cry, and I don't wanna start blubbering in a public place, dammit :(

Oh well... 'Least it's dark, so I'll be spared the total loss or credibilty that would befall me were I to be seen crying in public...

No great CGI!!!? About 80% of the Helm's Deep battle was done using Massive. Massive is a computer program that can animate unique, intelligent, and (in the world it's placed in) self-aware "agents". Each agent is tweaked in personality, and will respond differently to situations, much as a real person would. As an example, they were having trouble at first, because the two armies behaved differently each time. The defenders would succesfully repel the attack; both armies would charge each other but not attack; both sides would immediatly retreat; etc... They found it nessisary to unbalance the agents in favour of the attackers to get the desired result most of the time.

Everything from the swordplay to the raising and scaling of ladders was done using Massive. The only stuff not done with Massive were close-up shots of main characters speaking... Even the in-your-face CQB stuff was done with it. All the noises they make are done with it, and even the ground-level up-close shots of the Uruk-hai in the rain before the battle was made with (thought very slightly scripted) Massive.

I was thoroughly impressed by the technology, and it's quite versatile. You can have "hero" agents that use specifically motion-captured movements, such as pulling an unsuspecting archer off a wall, and launching him into a crowd of Uruk-hai, all while standing on the top of a ladder, or alternatly, returning the favour by sending a ladder falling backwards onto normal agents, who then react and respond accordingly.

Not to subtract from the movie at all, of course. It was a damned good movie, and I'm going back at least twice more before the end of January, but being a directorial hopeful, I was more impressed by the technology behind the scenes, and the promise it shows, cause I've had some ideas floating around in my head for a while that would be prohibitivly expensive to do using any other method, but are perfectly suited to the Massive system. Keep in mind, it isn't limited to ground agents. Massive would work with anything from space fighter craft to a fleet of WWII warships.

Long story short, movie = good. Massive = Amazing

Really? I heard from a LOTR fan that the massive was not that used (they used lots of extras instead) and he was not super amazed (he was expecting alot the 'masive' program)

I distinguished perfectly what was CGI and what was not in the Battle. some movements were awful. I didn't saw any great differences between orcs (they all looked the same) and between humans (they looked the same too). The close-up were not CGI, moslty.

I think that that the prologue in FOTR was done with massive too. That scene has awful movements.

Maybe the massive is a good idea and program, that makes battles done easier , but it needs more developement, from what we saw in the movie.

I my opinion, massive program or not, the AOC battle scene is almost flawless (those clone troppers abetter than anything in TTT)

Well this is my opinion, i'm a litte hard with CGI, but it is becasue i like CGI alot, and i'm let down when it is noticeable...

Well, I saw it yesterday. And, since my feeling have already been expressed by other people, I'll leave it a this: 'Tis a work of art.

And the funniest part was where

The Ents (giant walking and talking trees for those less educated :D) went to Isangard and kicked ass on the Orcs. That was good.

Awful? o_O

Well KH, you're entitled to your own opinion, but...I think...maybe...that your bias might be talking ;)

Sauron Punching humans in the Prologue of FOTR makes me :barf:

Ok, TTT battle scenes may not be awful, but they are not match to AOC ones (regarding CGI. of course TTT battle has more grandeur and screen time)

@KH: o.O? Why? I didn't see anything wrong with the CG when Sauron was whacking those people around...

...does it make you puke.gif for some other reason? :D

 but it's awfull! The movements do not look right - i'm speaking about the soldiers that 'fly'.
