Hmm... here's some of my favourite quote's from Kong Fuzi's (Confucius's) "Analects" (although he generally promotes as conservative patriarchic a system as the worst rightwing conservatives, he does make a point now and then, and at least he has the excuse that he's not only mentally stuck in 400BC, but actually lived then! ;) So it's a good read):

"The Master said, 'He who learns but does not think, is lost'. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger."

"The Master said, I once spent a whole day without food and a whole night without sleep, in order to meditate. It was no use. It is better to learn."

"The Master said, Impetuous, but tricky! Ingeniuous, but dishonest! Simple-minded, but capable of breaking promises! To such a man I can give no recognition."

"Chi Wên Tzu used to think thrice before acting. The Master hearing of it said, Twice is quite enough."

"The Master said, To have faults and to be making no effort to amend them is to have faults indeed!"

Oh, and while I'm at it, here's some quotes from 'A Book of Five Rings' by Shinmen Musashi no Kami Fujiwara no Genshin (Miyamoto Musashi). A book that is some hundred times more important if you are into kendo, but still a good read anyhow.

"It is said the Warrior's way is the twofold Way of pen and sword, and he should have a taste for both."

"There is timing in everything .... there is also timing in the Void."

"Both in fighting and in everyday life you should be determined through calm."

"Whatever attitude you are in, do not be conscious of making the attitude; think only of cutting."

Oh, and how could we have a quotes section without everyone's favourite poet/kickass revolutionary, Subcommendante Marcos? It's a bit too long for image signatures, but a damn good quote. (from 'From Southeast Mexico's subterranian mountains')

Declaration at the Founding of EZLN:

A certain amount of tenderness is necessary

to start walking with so much standing in your way,

to wake up in so much night.

A certain amount of tenderness is necessary

to be able to discern a beam of light in this darkness,

to due to duty and shame create a new order.

A certain amount of tenderness is necessary

to remove all the bloody pigs out there.

But sometimes it is not enough with

a certain amount of tenderness

and you are forced to add...

a certain amount of lead.

Oh, D_S complained that I use too many politacally charged quotes. Too bad there's so many of them out there. Like:

"You make yourself ridiculous by thinking you can do anything. The world is divided in two. There are the communists on that side and on this side the free world. The Russians and the Americans, no one else. What are we. Americans. Behind me there is the government, behind the government is NATO, behind NATO is the U.S. You can't fight us, we are Americans."

-Athens inspector Basil Lambrou, speaking to prisoners before torturing them, during the US-supported Papadopoulos dictatorship

"Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."

-Tom Lehrer

"The US has always regarded international laws as an annoying encumbrance, unless they can be used to advantage against an enemy."

-Noam Chomsky

"I got nothing against no Viet Cong. No Vietnamese ever called me a nigger."

-Muhammad Ali

"We should cease to talk about vague and... unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standard and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts..."

-George Kennan, Director of Policy Planning U.S. State Department, 1948

"We're going to become guilty, in my judgement, of being the greatest threat to the peace of the world. It's an ugly reality, and we Americans don't like to face up to it. I hate to think of the chapter of American history that's going to be written in the future in connection with our outlawry in Southeast Asia."

-Senator Wayne Morse 1967

"I dream that someday the United States will be on the side of the peasants in some civil war. I dream that we will be the ones who will help the poor overthrow the rich, who will talk about land reform and education and health facilities for everyone, and that when the Red Cross or Amnesty International comes to count the bodies and take the testimony of women raped, that our side won't be the heaviest."

-Richard Cohen

Ooooh! This one is also appropriate for these forums:

"Most poor parts of the world sees the US as Darth Vader."

-John Lloyd in Financial Times

"Since the first days of the Cuban revolution it has served as a source of inspiration for all freedomloving people."

-Nelson Mandela

"I am not a liberator. Liberators do not exist. The people liberate themselves."

-Che Guevara

"It now stands as the only state on record which has both been condemned by the World Court for international terrorism and has vetoed a Security Council resolution calling on states to observe international law. "

-Noam Chomsky about the US, referring to the reactions to their support to the contras terrorists attacking Nicaragua in the 1980ies

"A world in which others controlled the course of their own development ... would be a world in which the American system would be seriously endangered."

-Benjamin Cohen

"I believe that if we had and would keep our dirty, bloody, dollar soaked fingers out of the business of these nations so full of depressed, exploited people, they will arrive at a solution of their own. And if unfortunately their revolution must be of the violent type because the "haves" refuse to share with the "have-nots" by any peaceful method, at least what they get will be their own, and not the American style, which they don't want and above all don't want crammed down their throats by Americans."

-General David Sharp, former United States Marine Commandant, 1966

"The greatest purveyor of violence on earth is my own government."

-Martin Luther King Jr 1967

"**** your Parliament and your Constitution. We pay a lot of good American dollars to the Greeks, Mr. Ambassador. If your Prime Minister gives me talk about Democracy, Parliament and Constitutions, he, his Parliament, and his Constitution may not last very long."

-President Lyndon Johnson to a Greek Ambassador

"We [the U.S.] has over 200 incidents in which we have put our troops into other countries to force them to our will."

-John Stockwell, former CIA official

"Possession is 9/10 of the problem."

-John Lennon

...and to end it all in a lighter mood:

"The only political leader who's got balls."

-Diego Maradona, on Fidel Castro ;)

Oooh, school theme, is it? :)

"'Teaching to the test' [is] a practice likened to memorizing an eye chart. With enough drill and rote work, even a person with 20/150 vision can rattle off 'E-F-P-T-O-Z'. Of course this doesn't mean that person can truly see."

-Meredith Scrivner

"I think the big mistake in schools is trying to teach children anything, and by using fear as the basic motivation. Fear of getting failing grades, fear of not staying with your class, etc. Interest can produce learning on a scale compared to fear as a nuclear explosion to a firecracker."

-Stanley Kubrick

"Every hour spent on such exam preparation is an hour not spent helping students to become critical, creative, curious learners."

-Alfie Kohn

"School-days, I believe, are the unhappiest in the whole span of human existence. They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks, new and unpleasant ordinances, brutal violations of common sense amd common decency. It doesn't take a reasonably bright boy long to discover that most of what is rammed into him is nonsense, and that no one really cares very much whether he learns it or not."

-H. L. Mencken

"What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge and not knowledge in pursuit of the child."

-George Bernard Shaw

"Men are born ignorant, not stupid; they are made stupid by education."

-Bertrand Russell

"Standardized tests equal standardized students."

-Amanda Parsons, student activist, Boulder, CO

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning."

-Henry Ford

"Testing improves education the same way that bombing promotes democracy."

-Steve Cohn, Education professor at Tufts University

"I have heard stories. Terrible stories. Stories of deranged fans hacking in and destroying forums because someone shut down their thread. You know the type: a little tall, a lot of facial hair, kind of husky, wears glasses, looks kinda like a buffer Harry Potter. The kind of guys you don't want to hang around. The kind of guys that'll mess you up if you say bad things about Magic: The Gathering." -Rad707_Pandaz, on who's really in charge here

This hails from C'jais in JkII.net forums. It was originally posted by Rad707_Pandaz.:) It made me hurt laughing.
