Maybe not an obsessive fanboy but I definitely got that collector geek sort of vibe from him, which fits the character. š

Return to Monkey Island šØGAME-WIDEšØ Spoiler Chat
Thrik replied to Jake's topic in General Discussion
Initially I thought Dee was meant to be a child version of either Madisonās magic wielder or Flair, similar to the whole Chuckie/LeChuck and Boybrush/Guybrush paradigm. This never came to anything so Iām guessing it was just a similar design (indeed just like how the two adult characters I mentioned look similar), unless anyone knows better.- 678 replies

Throwaway lines and gags in MI games, that actually weren't

šØšØšØ Please wrap any Return to Monkey Island spoilers in spoiler tags. šØšØšØ -
This is from the pre-release thread but itās still compelling I think, especially given Ronās cryptic post on Twitter a while back asking why Guybrush arrives on Melee Island via the arch and not via the docks ā something he does again in Return. * Archway? Park entrance? * Guybrush and blind Melee lookout stand in the same place as Guybrush and deaf Booty lookout relative to the entrance? * Big Whoop is Booty Town but also not? And in Return now a seaside park too? * Big Whoop ticket desk is Captain Dreadās ship? * Guybrush arrives on Melee expecting weenies, which happen to be next to the Big Whoop entrance? * You also start Monkey Island 2 next to a weenie shop?????

Return to Monkey Island šØGAME-WIDEšØ Spoiler Chat
Thrik replied to Jake's topic in General Discussion
I didnāt really consider this before, but your comment about Guybrushās brother made me remember that that whole brother exchange did happen in MI2, even though in ReMI itās just Guybrushās friend, right? I think my head is roughly at: * During MI2 we see Guybrush as a child playing around with his brother * During ReMI we see Guybrushās son playing around with his friend, reenacting one of his dadās made-up stories * During ReMI we also see Guybrush making up a new story for his son I am leaning towards all of it being made up, however grounded in the fabric of places where Guybrush and his family spend time at different points in their lives. An amusement park, a seaside park, a theme park ā we see all three and theyāre quite distinctive from one another. š- 678 replies

Yes Thunderpeel, very dream-like the way thatās done. It starts out as a fairly faithful reproduction of MI2ās Big Whoop, but then becomes a strange seaside park.

I think in most cases it wouldnāt make much noticeable difference and did probably help keep the production of so many character sprites breezy, but yes the Melee top did stand out and perhaps warranted a special case. He spends most of his time talking to you with the shirt reversed after all.

Hereās a thought. Is the intro shot actually just⦠Moving on⦠The covered-up āspitā sign itself isnāt particularly subtle, but I enjoyed how the actual location of that area is roughly where it should be relative to the Big Whoop-ified version of Booty Town.

It is possible you were expecting a bit much of the poor guy. He couldnāt even see Guybrush! Unless it was all a ruse to mess with people. In which case the cataracts could be a ruse too. How else would he find his way to the mansion, and see the pirate ship in MI1 for that matter? Maybe Elaineās alternative route to Monkey Island is simply going west ā itās right there ā but nobody thinks to head that way. In all seriousness, I think Guybrush just meant the lookout was facing his way.

Yeah I think they should have signalled this sooner to avoid exactly what has happened, which is people taking time off work (as fate would have it not an issue for those in the UK now).

In fairness the later part of the quote suggests that they did keep some of that in the game. I personally wouldnāt mind if they initially went more āall inā on that and decided to dial it back. I find the relationship fairly uninteresting overall and am equally disinterested In seeing it fall apart. Iād rather it simply not feature all that much in the story at all.

Return to Monkey Island [SPOILER FREE]

One more time. -
Seems like a pretty nice update to Broken Sword 2 too. I understand that remaster is significantly less intrusive than what they did to BS1 ā I ended up just playing the original on ScummVM, although I was repeatedly saddened by the screwed up scene fade transitions.

And Meathookās lovely, luscious, bald cannonball for a head.

Which Monkey Island has the smallest number of monkeys?

I compiled the chicken sound effects (that I could be bothered to check): -
Which Monkey Island has the smallest number of monkeys?
Thrik replied to Vainamoinen's topic in General Discussion
Yeah the sounds are weird. I had a listen... It is a cluck or weird spring sort of noise in most versions, but the Amiga specifically has more of a duck honking sound (not really a quack). Iām also informed that the audio effect refers to a duck sound but is mapped to a cluck event. Itās possible that akin to how the Special Edition developers pulled out and recorded all dialogue lines, they simply pulled out the sound effect names for the Amiga port and put what they expected they should sound like in. I also noticed a weird anomaly with the CD versions. On Sega it uses a proper-sounding cluck effect, but on PC the same sound is weirdly slowed down and sounds unnatural. Perhaps to enhance the ghost effect. š¤·āāļø -

I do not distinguish. Chickens can function without a head anyway. Apparently. -
Which Monkey Island has the smallest number of monkeys?
Thrik replied to Vainamoinen's topic in General Discussion
Itās possible, but Secret is no slouch. Here we have six chickens: A further three here: And the chicken shop could conceivably contain an infinite number of chickens but I think weāve established previously that sort of thing isnāt an acceptable data point: So a total of nine chickens. Sadly I donāt have time to look at the other games just now. -

Are we ready for the chicken debate?
