JK__Falcon
Hey amidala, i'm one of the new semi-regulers on the chop-shop servers (that is when my computers not playing up and crashing on me), and was just wondering why the bonus map pack got taken out of the rotation? Amidala from Chop Shop
Originally posted by Morningstar Hey amidala, i'm one of the new semi-regulers on the chop-shop servers (that is when my computers not playing up and crashing on me), and was just wondering why the bonus map pack got taken out of the rotation? Bottom line: too many people are too lazy to download a free map pack from the developers of the game. It's not fun to watch your full servers become almost empty when the bonus maps start because so few people took the time to download the JA Bonus Map Pack. I had automated messages for days announcing where to download the Bonus Map Pack, warnings that people would be dropped by the server if they didn't have the map pack, etc. Still, the servers would empty out. And the people who downloaded the map pack would whine "I hate this map" etc. while they played the new maps. This is always the problem with non-standard maps in a public server: too few people take the time to download them. This has always been my experience in the past. I will wait a few more days until more people have gotten around to downloading the map pack, then try again. I only switch the rotation to include the Bonus Maps when the server is full, and has several names that I recognize playing. Only then do I have a hope of 3-5 people staying in the server when the bonus maps start.
Prime
That's too bad. I've gotten them, and I hope to play them on your server one day
bodstevens
I would say i have to agree most players are too lazy to dl the new map pack..... this comunity is so lame when it comes to new maps. I remember this happening all the time in jk2. New maps come out server runs them..players drop due to not havingthe maps... The CTF crowd was like this.. new maps but every one wants to play the same 3 over and over again....bah... All the other games I play bf1942 cod moh all have the new maps downloaded by players i don't know why this group of players always seems so stunned over new maps.. It used to bother me we'd have all these well made maps and the most popular download was a full size yoda or a nude darth maul / padme (ugg)....come on.. Oh well. Oh well. a lot of games are like that, not just jk2/ja. custom maps were made in the umpteen thousands for games like quake 3, but only maybe a dozen ever got played. one "semi-fix" for this problem is used in RTCW: ET by the devs at splashdamage. Here are a few commands from our ET server cfg: set sv_maxRate "25000" // 10000 standard but poor for ET set sv_dl_maxRate "100" // increase/decerease if you have plenty/little spare bandwidth set sv_allowDownload "0" // global toggle for both legacy download and web download set sv_wwwDownload "1" // toggle to enable web download set sv_wwwBaseURL "http://www.oursitehere" // base URL for redirection set sv_wwwDlDisconnected "0" // tell clients to perform their downloads while disconnected from the server set sv_wwwFallbackURL "http://www.oursecondsitehere" // URL to send to if an http/ftp fails or is refused client side The web download and fallback are a blessing for servers running customs. I can load up 10mb maps and let clients download them at 100mb a second without lagging the server at all due to their downloads being directed away to either another FTP *or an http site. This makes custom maps almost no problem at all because in a matter of seconds they can download them rather than the usual 2/4kbps found in most quake 3 engine games like jk2/ja. I tried those cvars in Jedi Academy but they are unrecognized, so I guess that capability isn't available in JA.
Rumor
amidala read this line from uj's post: one "semi-fix" for this problem is used in RTCW: ET by the devs at splashdamage. note it says used in ET. splashdamage made those cvars and those features. Amidala from Chop Shop
Yes, I was just hoping it was a "hidden" feature in JA. I wish someone (Hex?) would add the same capability for JA.
FK | unnamed
yeah, by all means I don't see why it is not possible via a mod, both games are running off the same engine etc.
razorace
So what exactly does it do? It opens up a webpage?
SpartaZx
directly opens up a download off of the site where the file is (rtcwfiles.com, etc) at usually around 100kbs+
keshire
Looks like the ingame download redirected so it doesn't lag the server. Maybe set up an external file pointing to the download locations?
Amidala from Chop Shop
I have put the bonus maps back in the rotation on the FFA server, as more people seem to have finally downloaded thr JA Bonus Map Pack http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?s=&action=file&id=381&PHPSESSID=fc9eba3e375b6cde0ae95c7f8496a5bd I am still keeping the bonus CTF map out of the regular rotation on the CTF server (many CTF regulars still haven't downloaded it or don't like it) and the instagib server has only the standard maps. Side
moslty cuz of the bridge in the midle of the map
lllKyNeSlll
Ya the bridge is a problem. But I like the map. If you know the enemy just got the flag, you could simply suicide and wait for them at the bridge and pull them as they come off. They’d have to have a godly gunner to kill all the pull people at the bridge in order to allow the capper a safe passage. ALSO FPS ISSUES KILL ON THAT MAP
Amidala from Chop Shop
I haven't had time to explore that map, but others tell me there are other routes that don't use the bridge. Their main complaint is that the map is just too big.
Cal-Gon Gin
custom maps give a game longer shelf life. I frag with a nice group of folks in Quake3 on a family of servers that mostly use custom maps. The key, we found, to drawing in new folks was a dedicated web site, with forums. Does the Chop Shop have a site like this? It might help. It would also be nice to chat with some of the regulars. Brit N'y
Amidala from Chop Shop
I don't have a web site although I might be setting one up soon. In the meantime, many of the regulars post on this forum: http://www.jedielite.com/
acdcfanbill
size is somewhat of an issue on teh map, but not a very big one for me, the main prob with it as i see it, is it doesnt flow that well, little ammo that easily avalible, and guns mismatched on sides. Yea, its a pretty map, but pretty doesnt equal good ctf gameplay
