Kurgan
As a 25 year old I'm almost in the clear (selective service is 18-25), but I wouldn't wish to go over there and die for a cause I don't believe in, or wish that on anyone else who doesn't believe in it. As I see it, most of those who go into military service in this country do it for the money ("earn money for college!" say the commercials) or because of family sense of obligation ("my siblings/parents did it, so should I"), not because they are excited about fighting some war, and having to kill or be killed. Here's an article debunking one of the things listed as an exemption for military service: http://snopes.com/military/onlyson.htm My view is that with the various war-related scandals, and the approaching presidential election, no intelligent administration is going to reinstate the US draft. Kurgan
Yeah, undergrads just get to finish the academic year and seniors the current semester, so you're out of there. Granted, this new way of doing it is supposed to be more fair and equal than drafts of the past, but, you're still being asked to fight and die for a cause you may not believe in, being seperated from your family and/or friends for long periods of time (2 years). Here's an opinion piece I recently read from a guy who doesn't think it's going to happen: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/wars/a/draft.htm Still, if you feel strongly about this, I suggest you write to your Representative/Congressman and let them know. That's how it's supposed to work!

I hope you know that made pretty much no sense at all. Separating religion from state? Who brought that up? Little silver spoon case???? Oil money? El Sitherino
mobbit, I wasn't calling bush a hairless gerbil. I was stating that I have a hairless gerbil. His name is tickles. I said I don't have a president because I didn't elect him, I don't support him, and my family didn't vote for him. Originally posted by IG-64 LIBERAL POINTLESS BUSH HATERS! .... Because (and this is just my theory, so no, I have absolutely no facts to back it up) I believe that the oil companies are realizing that we're going to run out of oil in the next 20 or so years, and their business is going to be gone, so they're hiking gas prices to make as much money to line their pockets with so that in 20 years they don't care that they have no jobs anymore, because they'll still have their mountains of money. Kain
Alright, we got idiot Bush trying to institute a draft for no reason. We got idiot Kerry who can't keep his mind made up. We got Nader who won't win cuz, well, he's not as rich as Kerry or Bush. Most of the republicans here need to learn this lesson: Theodore Roosevelt To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. OH!! And one of my old posts included... RESUME: GEORGE W. BUSH The White House PAST WORK EXPERIENCE: I ran for congress and lost. I produced a Hollywood slasher B movie. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas; company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money. Biggest move: Traded Sammy Sosa to the Chicago White Sox. With my father's help (and his name) was elected Governor of Texas. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I changed pollution laws for power and oil companies and made Texas the most polluted state in the Union. I replaced Los Angeles with Houston as the most smog ridden city in America. I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas government to the tune of billions in borrowed money. I set record for most executions by any Governor in American history. I became president after losing the popular vote by over 500,000 votes, with the help of my fathers appointments to the Supreme Court. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT: I attacked two countries. I spent the surplus and bankrupted the treasury. I shattered record for biggest annual deficit in history. I set economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12 month period. I set all-time record for biggest drop in the history of the stock market. I am the first president in decades to execute a federal prisoner. I am the first president in US history to enter office with a criminal record. In the first year in office I set the all-time record for most days on vacation by any president in US history. After taking the entire month of August off for vacation, I presided over the worst security failure in US history. I set the record for most campaign fundraising trips than any other president in US history. In my first two years in office over 2 million Americans lost their jobs. I cut unemployment benefits for more out of work Americans than any president in US history. I signed more laws and executive orders amending the Constitution than any president in US history. I presided over the biggest energy crises in US history and refused to intervene when corruption was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US history and refused to use the national reserves as past presidents have. I cut healthcare benefits for war veterans. I set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously take to the streets to protest me (15 million people), shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of mankind. I dissolved more international treaties than any president in US history. Members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in US history. (The 'poorest' multimillionaire, Condoleeza Rice has a Chevron oil tanker named after her). I am the first president in US history to order a US attack and military occupation of a sovereign nation, and I did so against the will of the United Nations and the world community. I created the largest government department bureaucracy in the history of the United States. I set the all-time record for biggest annual budget spending increases, more than any president in US history. I am the first president in US history to have the United Nations remove the US from the human rights commission. I am the first president in US history to have the United Nations remove the US from the elections monitoring board. I removed more checks and balances, and have the least amount of congressional oversight than any presidential administration in US history. I rendered the entire United Nations irrelevant. I withdrew from the World Court of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to US prisoners of war and by default no longer abide by the Geneva Conventions. I am the first president in US history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 US elections). I am the all-time US (and world) record holder for most corporate campaign donations. My biggest lifetime campaign contributor, who is also one of my best friends, presided over one of the largest corporate bankruptcy frauds in world history (Kenneth Lay, former CEO of Enron Corporation). I, with a policy of "disengagement," created the most hostile Israeli-Palestine relations in at least 30 years. I am the first US president in history to have a majority of the people of Europe (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and stability. I am the first US president in history to have the people of South Korea more threatened by the US than their immediate neighbor, North Korea. I failed to fulfill my pledge to get Osama Bin Laden "dead or alive." I failed to capture the anthrax killer who tried to murder the leaders of our country at the United States Capitol building. After 18 months I have no leads and zero suspects. In the 18 months following the 911 attacks I have successfully prevented any public investigation into the biggest security failure in the history of the United States. I removed more freedoms and civil liberties for Americans than any other president in US history. In a little over two years I created the most divided country in decades, possibly the most divided the US has ever been since the civil war. I entered office with the strongest economy in US history and in less than two years turned every single economic category heading straight down. RECORDS AND REFERENCES: I have at least one conviction for drunk driving in Maine (Texas driving record has been erased and is not available). I was AWOL from National Guard and deserted the military during a time of war. I refuse to take drug test or even answer any questions about drug use. All records of my tenure as governor of Texas have been spirited away to my fathers library, sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. All records of any SEC investigations into my insider trading or bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. All minutes of meetings for any public corporation I served on the board are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. Any records or minutes from meetings I (or my VP) attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review. For personal references please speak to my daddy or uncle James Baker (They can be reached at their offices of the Carlyle Group for war-profiteering). ckcsaber
There are definitly reasons for reinstating the draft kain. And if it does come down to the draft being reinstated, I would gladly serve my family and country. Having just turned 18 6 days ago, it is not my plan to join the military post-high school, as I have plans of attending Michigan State, but I will step up to the plate. Ok then, I will add some fuel to the fire, per say: 1.) He's a horrible, horrible orator. And it shows every single time. 2.) The military has yet to turn up Osama Bin Laden. Whose fault is it to blame for going to war against a terrorist cell and is unable to produce the results (you start with the outside and work inside, otherwise you keep getting a new guy every time you take out the leader)? He's batting one for two after nabbing Saddam though, I will give him that. 3.) The Patriot Act, which was brought to fruition under his administration, is one of the most questionable documents concerning rights to this date. 4.) Intermingling religion into politics: No ****ing way, no how. The minute I hear we're going to war in the name of God, I, and hopefully others, will go to the extra mile to make sure he's out of office for good. When you mix politics with religon, you get bad results. Look at the histories of world leaders who have done so, and you will get an idea of what happens. That's only the start. However, if there's one thing you cannot blame Bush on, it's the state of the economy. He came in during the peak of the dot.com bust. And in all honesty, it wasn't the government's fault. Too many people were going to silicon valley to the point where it was oversaturated. That's what caused the economy to tumble, because they wanted the hot commodity for the easy way out. Joetheeskimo
Can a Mod move this to Senate? It looks like a flame war might break out, and this looks every bit like a debate. On the current discussion - No comment, yet. Because I'm with Mennonite, but I suck at debating, and Mennonite has it under control.
