Over hyped more than Madonna in Playboy. The first Half Life, to me, was less than mediocre at best. Same with CS. Neither of these games did anything for me whatsoever. I would say I'd pick it up in the bargain bin sometime, but I think 10-15 dollars for these games is still asking too much. Maybe if they gave me 10-15 dollars AND the game, I could at least **** can the game when I got home and buy a case of beer...

Just a question, but would you use the 9800 Pro for anything else besides games? When I got my 9800 Pro, I used it mostly for games, but oddly enough I use it more often in Photoshop than in a game...

"Valve has forged the framework for the next generation games, demonstrating what our medium can and should be able to accomplish" - PC Gamer

Yep, Half Life 2 deserves that 98%!

And i just got my Silver HL2 package on steam!

It got 96% in the UK PCGamer, I'll get it when my computer will run it, my curunt one should but I'm waiting for a demo.

Valve already confirmed that they will not be releasing a demo. Even if they did it will be released after the game releases, something like Doom 3.

so....when is this game coming out then, if there is already a review?

You should have asked that question when the first Doom 3 review came out before the game too. :D

What does that mean? That you *ordered* it?

I have been pretty vocal on how there were probably ~50 reviews for Doom 3 between Tuesday and Friday of the first release week. And how those reviews were slanted heavily in the 90+ range, and how everything since the hype-gas wore off has been in the 80-ish range, leaving an average 'over-score' of 88%.

*BUT*

Doom 3 went gold on 7/14, nearly 3 weeks before the release date. That gave those reviewers *plenty* of time to do a *legitimate* review of actually shipping product that they test in their own settings on their own PC's. So the complaint is that the heady rush of cool graphics tainted the scores too high.

Half-Life 2 isn't Gold yet.

And as far as I know, Valve isn't shipping copies for evaluation around the world.

So no review appearing in print can be considered legitimate. Period. Assuming that it goes gold today (I hear it is pretty close), then reviews appearing in >1 week could be based on actual product. Until then, it can be assumed that *any* review is tainted in order to get a 'scoop'.

What did they say about the installation? I don't recall anything (my PCGamer Mag is at work), and I think I'd have noticed. After DX: IW, I want those details - not just gushing over every detail and pooh-poohing any flaw as 'you won't notice'.

Again - I'm not saying that HL2 *isn't* a 98% game - I really hope it is! It is just that this type of hype is exactly what is wrong with the gaming industry.

didn't PC Gamer UK give Worms 3D 90%?

and i'm sure JO was more than 90%

Far cry 95%?

Half life 97%?

Sims 96%? Nascar 4 95%

Elite Force 93%?

Ghost recon 93%?

Heavy Gear 2 92%

ECHELON!!!!91%!!!!???

They've given over 100 games 90% or more...

I'm not saying it doesn't deserve it, but they have kind of boxed themselves in by giving a number of "good" games 90% or more already.

Its interesting to see that they ackowledge the fact that people are suspicious about their cover review scores....

I'm sure it will rock though, i just won't be getting it until i have gotten around to getting a new graphics card... by which time it will have hopefully dropped a bit in price too...:D

You can probably get a 9800 Pro for about $200 or less.
