Pocket PCs ??

Recommended Posts

I have a Pocket PC, a Cassiopia by, you guessed it, Casio (there's a shocker). Mom bought it for me at Costco for $100, 1997.

I play pocket pool on it (no, I mean I REALLY did install a game called that... sickos)

It's great, but more a novelty item for me since it's slightly out of date. I prefer my new Sony-Ericsson cell-phone. It does everything I want (except make/recieve phone calls).

j/k :D

I've had PDA's since ... well, since ~1992, I guess. I had HP-LX's, Newtons, Palms, Psions, WinCE HPC's, Palm-Sized and finally Pocket PC's.

I currently have just the Palm Tungsten C, which has a keyboard built-in. No MP3 playback, lacks 3D games, and so on ... but I still ended up selling my iPaq 5450 (also had keyboard) because the Palm was just plain faster. And ...

... guess what else? I *also* use tons of Word and Excel, and found that Documents to Go for the Palm was *better* than Pocket Excel and Pocket Word for the Pocket PC. And given my iPod and GBA (now DS), those Pocket PC features didn't matter.

But in terms of games, I always went back to puzzles - things like Tetris, Chess, Mahjong, etc. There are decent RPG's out there - there is a PocketEverquest, for instance. There are also Pocket Quake and Doom out there. The action games can be fun, but I never got into them enough to go beyond the demos for most. Again, with my PC and GBA gaming habits ...

Sivy ...one day you will meet a foul end sir ! All that spoilerisation has melted your brain, you silly Belgian fool :p (yes, I know you are not Belgian....etc etc)

is there really pocket version of simcity ? interesting :)

Yes, I have come across the pocket doom. I was quite chuffed to see there is a pocketNES emullator, Which means I wll be able to play some NES faves :p

I plan to get a DS and or a PSP eventually, but really cant take em to work or work trips... :p having something on a pocket pc will be a nice diversion.... I mostly was looking for puzzle games though, like tetris as or mahjong type stuff... :p

Mike -- long time no see ! :p

wow 1992 PDAs, were they heavy and clunky like old mobile phones !! :p

I do remember the old Newtons though(showing my age)... :p

Howdy ... I come around about once a week ...

Actually, the HP200LX was not all that much bigger than a Palm, and it had a nice clamshell look to it. It was a full DOS computer, and supported PC Cards.

My two favorite PDA's ever were the HP200LX and the Newton MessagePad 2000.

I counted 7 :p's in that post...

Oh, yeah stuff for PDA's, uhhh. I can check to see what my store has on it's catalog, but since it's Best Buy, it might be teh suck. I honestly don't really see the need to have a pocket PC, since nowadays you have easy access to a computer when ever you feel the need. But hey, if you travel a lot I'd say yay to the GPS program, and maybe a virtual escort service... since I know how you are...

That is sad but largely true ... and I remember the furor in the HPC beta & dev community when it was decided that the HPC 2000 platform was going to be crippled so as not to mess with computer makers' product differentiation ... so we ended up with Pocket PC's with keyboards (and no MSReader) rather than micro-laptops ...

The dell screens -were- good. Their new VGA (Highres) pocket PC screens have sort of washed out colours

I have Toshiba Satellite 5200 (I think you have one too IIRC !) for my whizz bang compy needs :p

I do plan to get a 512 or 1gb SD card, to store music and vid clips :) I didnt know there was a pocket pc version of winamp, cool :D

I liked the Sony Clie UX-50 and the iPaq 5450, each of which had both, and my Tungsten still has WIFI. I hate having to hook up cables all of the time ...

Mike

it is of no huge concern that my el cheapo ipaq sports no bluetooth :p plugging in a USB device(once a week most likely) into XP is no big hassle...

also Mike, dont forget the cost factor.... although I am using it for work, it isnt being paid for by work... (I claim it back of course :p) ... Im paying just 40% of the RRP here in Oz for mine, and tis boxed and brand new :) that other 60% can go towards paying my credit card off :(

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't get it due to lack of wireless, or that you should pay more to get it ... I'm just surprised that they are releasing PDA's without *some* sort of wireless.

That's what I get for riding the high end for so many years ... ;)

ive checked my docs, and I am actually getting the 1710, which is not significantly different, but does have IR apparently, which IIRC is a close quarters wireless :p Although my laptop has IR as well, I highly doubt I will go to the trouble of setting it up. I will have a usb cradle thingy that will sit nearby for charging and sync, no continuous plugging and unplugging of cables anyway :p

another thing to to remember Mike, your workplace may most likely have some top notch compys, I work in a state funded community health service, and we are lucky to have net capable pcs, let alone ones equipped wth bluetooth and the like :p

I'll be picking mine up next week, im sorta excited about it, I have always loved gadgets :p

NO! NONONO!

I'd say that is good but you can get a LOT more for that money. That particular device got pretty low reviews...

EDIT: Wait, Nevermind. rz1715 is the not good one. Move along.. :p

EDIT: And for the record.. I managed to get the Toshiba e800 for christmas
