I think I have a crazy Virus. Help?!

Well, I formatted my computer about a week ago because of a crazy virus, and I think I have one again.

Now, what happened was I had to use IE to view some sites, but then afterwards, AVG came up and said "VIRUS FOUND! se.dll"

And, whenever I open IE, a bunch of pop-ups come up, and it changed the homepage to something weird. Also, when I open folders like My Computer, My Documents, etc, this comes up. Same when I open Yahoo Messenger, MSN, or AIM, or anything like that.

I'm REALLY annoyed by this, and I'm wondering if anyone knows what it is, and how to permenantly get rid of it?

(I scanned the comp with AVG 2 times, Spybot once, and all that, but it doesn't help.)

And the thing that keeps coming back when I open it is "se.dll". I keep deleting it in AVG, but it keeps coming back. I tried manually deleting it, but it keeps coming back!!!

I would really appreciate some help here!

Thanks!

Step 1: Get "Hijack This". Follow directions.

Step 2: Post the log, and your problem, to a forum like the one IG linked to. Ask for interpertation/instruction.

This is assuming the solution in IG's second link doesn't work :)

Delete all files named se.dll :p obviously there is something out there putting the file back to distract you from the REAL virus, perhaps.

Or replace them if you need them.

Eww, I used to have something like that. Where like, "My Documents" would open up everytime I started the comp, I had to close it 5 times before it was gone.

I blame the schools..... and IE.

AND HOW OFTEN DO PEOPLE FORMAT THEIR COMPS? ITS A HUGE EVENT FOR ME!

For everyone, it seems like not such a huge problem.

I used to re-format all the time when I could back up my entire hard drive on a few dozen floppy disks...

Even with a program like Ghost, I hate doing that crap now. But the point for me was to re-install Windows or Dos (back in the day) to get a fresh install as well as a clean MBR.

I'm using Win2k and have considered going to XP, but I don't want the hassle of re-installing all of the software on my machine. I'm not sure how seamless the upgrade process is either...

Well, I went on the site IG showed, and they helped me out.

My computer is totally fine now.

Change to Linux. Nuf' said on my part

Or just use IE to get a better browser like Netscape or Mozilla Firefox

I like to run .exe's and not use WINE or some other program.

AND HOW OFTEN DO PEOPLE FORMAT THEIR COMPS?

Last time I did was sometime in 2002 or 2003.

Unfortunately Ad-Aware doesn't always help.

True dat.

Thanks all! :)

I haven't formatted my computer, once, since I bought it. Nor have I once formatted the computer before that, which was brought into my house before I was born. I use Norton Antivirus, and my computer hasn't picked up a virus for a year. Formatting is pointless and unneeded.

Only if you manage to avoid problems, which you seem to have so congrats to you.

But sometimes it's the easiest and most effective solution to a major problem, and sometimes it may be the ONLY solution.

If anythin pr0n sites work better with firefox, with IE you just get popup after popup, you just can't get rid of them, closing one down just makes 3 more come back in its place...

Or so I hear...

look ya'all, I aint dissin firefox, I *do* use it now, but there are a few sites that come up real strange, or make firefox shut down altogether, and they happen to be a cpl of my fave ones :(

Precisely! :p

Yeah, spelling nazi, I think you missed one. :p

As for reformatting, I've not done it at all on this system and I've had it since 2002 or so. Though, I think that I need to....
